Panjshanbe Market
Panjshanbe Covered Market is one of Khujand's famous attractions. Panjshanbe means Thursday. In Dushanbe they traded on Mondays, and in Khujand on Thursdays. The Panjshanbe bazaar is located in the very center of Khujand and in front of it is the mausoleum of Sheikh Muslihiddin. The bazaar consists of the main pavilion and many shops, tents, and shops adjacent to it. It is always very noisy here, as not only residents of the city come for shopping, but also guests from nearby villages. The main feature of the Panjshanbe market is its unique architecture and decor. The construction of the pavilion was carried out in the middle of the twentieth century and was completed in 1964. The bazaar building combines elements of oriental and the Stalinist empire, and the decoration is harmoniously performed using the Soviet and Eastern styles.
Khujand Fortress
Throughout the history of Khujand, in the centre of the city was its fortress. For 2500 years, the Khujand fortress expanded with the city, was destroyed by the conquerors, rebuilt again. After archaeological excavations, it was found that the first fortress was erected in the VI-V centuries BC, and consisted of an embankment rampart gradually converted into thick walls of raw clay. Moreover, in addition to the fortress, there was a city wall covering 20 hectares. During the heyday of the Great Silk Road, the Khujand fortress was rebuilt, as well as the city wall. However, the city grew even more, and was divided into three parts: the citadel, rabad and shahristan. At that time, the Khujand fortress was considered one of the most important city in Central Asia. However, the fortress was destroyed by Genghis Khan's army. In 1219-1220. In 1999, part of the eastern wall of the Khujan fortress, dating back to the 8th-10th centuries, was restored.

Really awesome day trip! Well organized and enjoyable. We had no issues going through the border. It’s a long walk though with lots of checkpoints!

Overall, the trip was good. The drive to the border was long and crossing the border was difficult for elderly travelers. The driver on the Uzbekistan side who drove us to and from the border was excellent. My wallet fell out in the backseat, and he returned it to me after I asked the hotel to called and asked him to look. Although he didn't speak English, he tried to show us some interesting spots as we drove pass them. The driver was friendly and honest.

The ticket we have purchased clearly states all the admissions are included. However when we arrived at khujand the tour guide told us none of the admissions were included. We were unable to visit the museum and the mausoleum. The tour agency was dishonest. Not recommend this tour. We appreciate the Tashkent side to take us to the train station.

It’s quite a complicated day trip. As a UK citizen the Tajikistan visa was a bit awkward to obtain and costly(this might differ for different nationalities). The boarder crossing is also a bit complicated but doable. You don’t get lots and lots of time in the city because there is about 6 hours of driving and a couple of hours at the boarder. So take into account 8 hours during the day will be travel leaving maybe 5 hours in the city. Everything else was good though, the food was cheap and the souvenirs and attraction tickets. Make sure to take a VISA card as master card is not accepted. As it was a Sunday no banks were open to exchange money but you can do that at the boarder. There are also lots of touts at the boarder. If you want to “tick off” a new country then definitely go

Excellent chance to see Tajikistan with a knowledgeable and entertaining guide. Had a great day. Not only did he explain the history and culture but helped me understand the prayer ritual in the mosque. He also helped me taste food in the market. I would recommend this day tour from Tashkent to other travellers.

I liked very much this very well organized tour. I appreciated the kindness of the 2 drivers (ouzbekh and tadjik) and the knowledge of the guide, from whom I learnt a lot on Tadjikistan history and culture. I definitely recommend this tour. You should only know that the Uzbekh driver will drive you to the border and then you will have to walk 1.5km through 4 gates to cross the border. The tadjik driver and guide will pick you up on the Tadjik side
