Choeung Ek Genocidal Center
Your tour guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to the killing fields of Choeung Ek Genocide Center – 9 miles away south of Phnom Penh. The infamous killing fields have a bloody history. Once an orchard and a Chinese cemetery, the Khmer Rogue, lead by Pol Pot, turned the place into what became known as the killing fields, where they executed around 20.000 victim. Over three years, they massacred and buried 2.5 million people. After remembering the dead, return to Phnom Penh to visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21). Meaning hill of the poisonous trees, Pol Pot turned a once popular high school into a high security prison. 20,000 people were imprisoned there, many of whom were tortured for information. Today it serves as a museum and a reminder of darker days. Your guide will return you to your hotel or guesthouse.
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
The most notorious of the 189 known interrogation centers in Cambodia was S-21, housed in a former school and now called Tuol Sleng for the hill on which it stands. Between 14,000 and 17,000 prisoners were detained, tortured there, often in primitive brick cells built in former classrooms.

The guide was really knowledgeable and used his own experience of the time to really hit home on such a tragic moment in history.

The private car transfer was smooth and reassuring — punctual, comfortable, and stress-free to navigate between sites. A small but genuinely appreciated touch: cold drinking water was provided throughout, which matters enormously under the Phnom Penh sun. That said, the allocated time at each site felt rushed. Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng are not places you should hurry through — the weight of what happened there demands more than a glance. I strongly recommend renting the audio guide independently at your own expense, which is very affordable on-site, and negotiating with for a personal longer stay especially at S-21. The tour earns its five stars for logistics; the depth of the experience, you'll have to carve out yourself. Come prepared — emotionally as much as practically.

An excellent if sombre and moving morning with Ran. A knowledgeable and engaging guide, sadly with some lived experience to draw upon. His unflinching stories brought this horrific past into focus. Thoroughly recommended.

It was very moving (at times it was a bit much information) and hearing it from a survivor made it even more emotional. They collected us on time and returned us to our hotel. The van air-condition worked well even in the heatwave we had :) Would not recommend for young children. Doing with a guide like this was much better than just hiring an audioguide.

Very worthwhile but sobering tour of the turmoil and genocide in Cambodia, perpetrated by Pol Pot. Our excellent guide Ran, told the story from somebody who grew up in those dark days. Highly recommend this tour to understand how the despot Pol Pot ruled in Cambodia in the late 70’s .

The pickup was convenient and in an air conditioned van. The tour guide Nin was very knowledgeable, but more notably she was extremely helpful when I experienced symptoms of heat exhaustion, bringing water and finding me air conditioning. (Be advised this tour is entirely open air with some shade.)

He was excellent he made the tour, very informative and emotional at the same time he told us the story from his heart and from his experiences. The Tour provides plenty of time at both the Killing Fields and Genocide Prison. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and able to provide personal reflection from his own families suffering. Our driver DaRa couldn’t have been more helpful with regular bottles of cold water. Very educational, emotional and good value. Take cash for the entrance fees.

We had an excellent tour today with Ran as our guide. He gave us a lot of history and context about the regime both before and during our visits to both the killing field and the genocide museum, as well as spoke about his personal experiences. It is quite a heavy and sobering experience but important to understand and learn from.

This was an incredible tour! The tour guide was so friendly, knowledgeable and engaging. He did a great job telling the history of Pol Pot and including his own history as well. This was a must see experience, I am very grateful to the tour guide and driver. Very comfortable bus with AC and cold water available.
