Chinese Fishing Nets
Chinese fishing nets(Cheena vala)are a type of stationary lift net in India. They are fishing nets that are fixed land installations for fishing. While commonly known as Chinese fishing nets in India, the more formal name for such nets is shore operated lift nets. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20m or more across. Each structure is at least 10m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end which is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. While such nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India they are mostly found in the Indian cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This way of fishing is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, as it was introduced by Chinese explorers who landed there in the 14th century. Indeed, one interpretation of city name Kochi is ‘co-chin', meaning like China.
Church of Saint Francis
St. Francis Church, in Fort Kochi (Fort Cochin), Kochi, originally built in 1503, is one of the oldest European churches in India and has great historical significance as a mute witness to the European colonial struggle in the subcontinent. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died in Kochi in 1524 when he was on his third visit to India. His body was originally buried in this church, but after fourteen years his remains were removed to Lisbon.

It was a very nice experience at Fort kochi. Mr Shiju is a very good, humble auto driver. He well explained everything in advance before reaching the site. He took us to all the important places. I would recommend him to all the tourists who come to Kochi. Good wishes to him and best of luck

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amazing Fort Kochi Experience! If you really want to understand the soul of Fort Kochi, this Tuk Tuk tour with Safeer must! I had an unforgettable experience exploring the rich history, culture, and hidden stories of this beautiful coastal town. From Portuguese and Dutch heritage to British-era landmarks, every stop was explained in a simple and engaging way. The tour covered iconic places like the Chinese fishing nets, St. Francis Church, Dutch Cemetery, and the charming streets filled with colonial architecture. What made it special was the storytelling — not just facts, but real stories about local life, freedom struggle history, and Kochi’s multicultural roots. Perfect for first-time visitors, history lovers, and photographers. The pace was relaxed, very friendly, and full of local insights you won’t find on Google. You’ll walk away with a deeper love for Fort Kochi. Highly recommended if you want an authentic and memorable Kochi experience👍👍

I recently had the pleasure of exploring Kochi, Kerala with an unforgettable tour guide who operates in a classic auto-rickshaw — and it was one of the most authentic travel experiences I’ve had! From the moment we met, Safeer’s warm smile and genuine enthusiasm made me feel welcomed. His knowledge of Kochi’s history and culture was impressive: he blended fascinating stories about Fort Kochi, Mattancherry Palace, and the Chinese Fishing Nets with little-known local legends that made each stop feel personal and special. Traveling in an auto-rickshaw added a distinct charm to the tour. It wasn’t just transportation — it was part of the experience. Riding through narrow lanes, catching glimpses of vibrant street life, smelling fresh spices drifting from markets, and feeling the breeze from the back seat made the city truly come alive. The guide navigated traffic expertly, always ensuring comfort and safety without losing the fun. What stood out most was his ability to adapt the tour to my interests. I mentioned a love for local food, and suddenly we were sampling street snacks like banana chips, pazhampori, and the best filter coffee I’ve tasted in Kerala. I also got insider tips on where to shop and explore on my own afterward — something only a local could share. In every way, this auto-rickshaw tour was more than sightseeing — it was a cultural immersion with a guide who clearly loves his city and enjoys sharing it with visitors. If you’re looking for an authentic, flexible, and memorable way to discover Kochi, this is an absolute must! ⭐ Highly recommended for solo travelers, couples, and anyone who wants a true local experience in Kochi. Anish and his colleagues were fabulous!! They took us on a wonderful Tuk Tuk tour of the city!! We saw all the sights, temples and craziness of this wonderful city! We loved every minute! Anish was always there waiting for us outside each site and whisked us expertly to the next place safely and with a smile! At the end they took us to a wonderful spot on the water for a drink to watch the sunset! When the tour was over, he happily drove us to Le Meridian hotel where we had a wonderful dinner and he was there to take us back to our cruise ship at the end of the night ( we paid extra for the extra personal service 😊) I highly recommend him if you are lucky enough to visit Cochin!

We did the Hidden Gems of Kochi Tuk-Tuk Tour in February 2026 and it was honestly one of the best things we did in India! Our driver/guide (Safeer – absolute legend!) picked us up right on time and immediately made us feel welcome. The tuk-tuk ride itself through the narrow, colorful lanes of Fort Kochi was pure joy – windy, fun, and so authentic. What made it special was that we didn’t just see the usual tourist spots. He took us to real hidden gems: quiet backstreets with stunning street art, beautiful old Portuguese and Dutch houses almost no one visits, lively local markets, and peaceful corners where you can feel the true soul of Kochi. His stories about the colonial history, the freedom movement, and daily life here were fascinating and so well told. The pace was perfect – never rushed, with time to take photos, walk around, and even enjoy a quick local snack he recommended. We laughed a lot, learned a ton, and left with the feeling that we had really experienced Fort Kochi, not just “seen” it. If you want an authentic, fun, and memorable way to explore Kochi, book this tour without hesitation. 100 % recommended – we would do it again in a heartbeat!
