Kumamoto Castle
Kumamoto Castle is one of Japan’s most celebrated fortresses, originally constructed in the early 1600s by the feudal lord Kato Kiyomasa. Known as one of the “Three Great Castles of Japan,” it is admired for its massive stone walls, ingenious defensive design, and the elegant black-and-white contrast of its keep. Although parts of the structure were damaged in past earthquakes, careful restoration has revived its grandeur. Visitors can step inside the reconstructed main tower, explore turrets and gates, and view exhibits displaying samurai armor, weapons, and the culture of the warrior class. From the castle grounds, sweeping views of Kumamoto City create a striking link between centuries of history and the modern skyline.
Sakuranobaba Johsaien
Sakura-no-baba Josaien is a cultural village at the base of Kumamoto Castle that recreates the lively atmosphere of a traditional castle town. The streets are lined with shops and restaurants offering Kumamoto’s local specialties, such as horse sashimi, Kumamoto ramen, and regional sweets. Visitors can also browse craft workshops and souvenir stores featuring traditional artistry unique to Kumamoto. With regular cultural events and interactive exhibits, this area is both a gourmet stop and an open-air museum, providing travelers with a chance to enjoy the flavors, crafts, and history of Kumamoto in one place.
