Book with the best and highest consumer-rated company in Durango, Co.Come and experience the La Plata Canyon tour also known as “Kennebec Pass”. This tour will take you up to 12,000 feet at or near the tree line. We get to see the amazing geology of how this canyon was carved out by ancient glaciers leaving the beautiful canyon along the way. We will get the chance to see wildlife such as deer, bears, marmots, birds, elk, and maybe even the elusive mountain lion. All of which have been spotted on our tours. La Plata Canyon is 20 minutes west of Durango, Colorado, and has a history of old Ghost Towns and plenty of old mines to chat about along the way. An absolute bucket list item!

What to expect:

Four wheel vehicle drive up a canyon with beautiful forest, streams, and waterfalls to 11,000 feet elevation above tree line. Great views of several maintain ranges.

Our guide/driver was wonderful. He provided so much information and willing to take many photos on our cameras!! It was a pretty bumpy ride so be prepared for that. Also, wear old clothes as you will be very, very dusty!

Beautiful does not describe the scenery on the mountain top. Alex was a great guide, pointing out things of interest and giving us some historical information. Very friendly and accommodating.

We had a great tour and Alex was very knowledgeable with info about the area. The ride is rough so take note….. and DUSTY!! Do not wear white.

Loved the beauty of the autumn colors! Some parts of the ride was rough and bumpy but love riding ATVs which are similar. Great tour guide who my husband enjoyed talking and learning from. Thank you!

Once off the main road the ride could be slow and very bumpy at times. There are some wonderful views of the valley below. After a 3000 ft. climb you are treated to a scenic view of the surrounding mountains. Our guide Nathan provided some interesting facts and history of the area.

The fall colors were beautiful and the driver felt safe and was accomodating. We were disappointed though as it was advertised as waterfalls and ghost towns. We saw no ghost towns and only two waterfalls as this time of year apparently they are dried up, which is understandable, but I feel it should have been marketed as a fall foliage tour instead. I probably wouldn't have paid for it if I would have known we were just going to see fall colors as we have canyons where we live where we can already see that. We were hoping to see numerous watefalls and ghost towns. You may want to change how you market this tour during this time of the year. Also, tour guide spent the entire time talking about people not following "canyon etiquette", the lack of marmot sightings, and how many unequipped cars he sees on the drive every time. It got tiring to hear the same things over and over again through the whole tour.
