This trail travels alongside Lake Dunstan on the opposite side of the lake to the road that travels between Cromwell and Clyde.

The engineering involved to create this trail is stunning with clip-ons attached to the rockface in places, the Hugo Suspension Bridge plus a very good trail surface throughout the ride.

The views and scenery on this ride are fantastic and you can fully understand the history of the area - from the goldrush to the building of NZ's largest dam - by reading the information boards along the way.

Cycle one of NZ's Great Ride Routes from Cromwell to Clyde on one of our brand new fleet of bikes. After the ride we then return you to the start point (where you left your car) by our luxury transport. A 42km ride on an excellent Grade 1-3 trail. The surface is very good compacted gravel. Our recommendation is that riders choose our e-bike option. There is 25km of the trail without any road access. This is a self guided bike ride so you are free to move along the trail at the speed of your own group. Riders should be 10 years and older (our oldest rider so far has been nearly 80), fit and confident on a bike. You will see from the photos that this is a great trip for family and friends. The e-bikes allow you to choose your own 'assistance' levels (including 'off') which ensures that no-one has to put in too much effort or is left behind trying to catch up! With great places to stop along the way including Carrick Winery, Burger & Coffee Afloat and finishing by buying a quick celebratory drink in historic Clyde before your shuttle back to Cromwell. Single Riders will be waitlisted. If you are a single rider we will contact you as soon as possible to confirm your booking.

The cycle was a great day and you got to see some stunning scenery along the way. Plus time to explore Clyde which was an added bonus. The bikes were in great condition. Luke was a fantastic host also. I would recommend using NZ Bike Trails to anyone and this trip.
Luke was a fabulous tour operator and enabled us to have a fantastic day.

We are just back from a spectacular bike ride from Cromwell to Clyde and have had an amazing day. We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to Luke for looking after us so well from start to finish. He explained everything so clearly at this mornings briefing which gave us great confidence to embark on the ride. When we met him in Clyde he was very welcoming and pleased for us that we completed our ride and lovely that he took photos to mark our accomplishment. We really liked his quiet confidence and friendly nature without him being ott like some tour guides we’ve had in the past. Thank you Luke for a perfect day.

Ian was ready for us at the pickup point with e-bikes & helmuts ready to go. He gave us plenty of time to get to know the bikes and practice before heading off, and some tips for stops along the way. He met us a short way into the journey to make sure all was going smoothly. Then he met our group (8 in total) at the end, allowed us time for a coffee and bite to eat before driving us back to the pickup point. He is a lovely guy with a lot of local knowledge. The trail is breathtaking in many places and whilst a lot of it is an easy ride there are a few steep challenging areas - those moments we were grateful to have chosen the e-bike option. Carrick Winery is a must stop point along the way - we had coffee and a yummy slice while looking out to the lake from their outdoor grass area. We had a fabulous day and recommend NZ Biketrails for their organisation, friendliness and safety. Thanks guys.

What an amazing cycling trail...world class. Stunning scenery . A fantastic winery on the route. Trip was 43 km from Cromwell to Clyde. The e-bike's from NZ Bike Trails were perfect for the gravel path conditions. Ian from NZ Bike Trails was excellent. He got us fitted for our bikes and gave us route maps and advice, and picked us up in Clyde and shuttled us back to Cromwell, providing interesting local information and history along the way. Be aware that some sections of the trail are a bit technical, not for the inexperienced rider. You won't regret taking an e-bike, rather than a standard bike.

We rode e-bikes and they made the hills easier, so we could really enjoy the ride. The scenery is absolutely stunning the whole way—lake, cliffs, and wide open views. The bike operator was professional, friendly, and very helpful, which made the day completely stress-free. Highly recommend this trail, especially with e-bikes!

Fantastic ride and well organised. Super glad we hired electric bikes. In some parts, it’s not for the faint-hearted. Great views. Would definitely do another one.

Had the best time cycling the Dunstan Trail! The team are lovely and make it so easy kitting you out with great bikes and letting you know the good spots to stop. The trail is very pretty, and well- maintained - Highly recommend!
