We will take you to the summit of Mauna Kea to see the sunset and we will do stargazing afterward (not at the summit). Our most unique part is that our guides will take the photo of the sunset and stars for you using their DSLR camera.
All photos are free of charge and you will get it to your smartphone at the end of the tour.

Please note that, depending on any guests get altitude sickness or other conditions, the time spent at the summit and the stargazing location may be adjusted.

Pick up guests from each pick up location starting from Target in Kona. (pick up time varies depending on the season) 14:00-15:00pm Target's parking lot meet in front of the Mcdonald’s that is in the Target parking area (74-5453 Makala Blvd, Kailua-Kona) 14:45-15:45pm/ Queens’ Market Place Please meet up at the shuttle bus stop in backside of the shopping mall, a LARGE parking lot near the NOT Starbucks (69-201 Waikoloa Beach Dr #201, Waikoloa) 15:30-16:30pm/ Gilbert Kahele Recreation Park (44-5400 Daniel K. Onizuka Astronomy Complex
Onizuka Visitor Information Station We will take a break at the Onizuka Visitor Center at an altitude of 2,800m or 9,000ft for early dinner and altitude acclimatization. We also change clothes for winter clothes here depending on the weather. Also gift shop is open for guests to purchase the items. (No food or drink sale)

5.00Shoyo was our tourguide. This was hands down one of the best, most spectacular and value-for-money tours I have ever been on (if u divide it over the number of hours!). Shoyo was conscientious, thoughtful, and attentive to all our needs. I was so awed to realize he was both driving AND giving us a full, running commentary, virtually all the way up to Mauna Kea! The hot chocolate in the cold during stargazing was such a welcome touch too! I really enjoyed this trip, and couldn't believe 8hrs flew by just like that!

5.00James was our tour guide and he was a great story teller and took good care of everyone on the tour. We had a great time watching the sunset and stargazing. James took so many photos for everyone and made sure you got lots of group and solo shots. The sandwiches were great, especially the veggie one. Highly recommend this tour!

5.00I joined the Mauna Kea stargazing tour and had an amazing experience. Our guide was incredibly friendly, patient, and professional. He drove safely the whole way and took great care of everyone. Throughout the trip, he explained everything clearly—from the history of Mauna Kea to the constellations we were looking at. It was a thoughtful and unforgettable experience. Highly recommend!

4.00James was our tour guide and he was fantastic—truly 10/10. His customer service was excellent, he took his time explaining everything, and even made sure our photos came out great. He constantly checked in to see how we were feeling with the altitude, which we really appreciated. Overall, the excursion was absolutely worth it. The sunset above the clouds was breathtaking, and even the drive itself is an experience. One note: the stars don’t look quite like they do in photos. You can still see plenty of stars without going all the way up or paying for a tour. Also, you definitely need a 4x4 to make this drive safely.

5.00Our Mauna Kea stargazing tour was nothing short of magical. We were incredibly lucky with a perfectly clear evening—and even more fortunate to witness Kīlauea actively erupting, casting a beautiful red glow across the horizon. The sunset above the clouds was breathtaking, with stunning views of Mauna Loa and even Haleakalā on Maui in the distance. A huge part of what made the experience exceptional was our guide, James. He went above and beyond for everyone in the group—truly bending backwards to accommodate every person’s needs. His warmth, patience, and deep knowledge made the entire journey feel personal and memorable. Once night fell, the stargazing was spectacular. The clarity at that elevation allowed us to see constellations, planets, and deep-sky objects with incredible detail. James guided us through the night sky in a way that was both educational and awe-inspiring. This experience felt rare, serene, and unforgettable. If you're visiting the Big Island, this is a must-do—and if you’re lucky enough to have James as your guide, it’s even better.

5.00Truly a great tour! As close to a trip to the cosmos as you can get on Earth. James is a great guide, very friendly and kind. The photos he took are excellent. Both the camera and telescope used are high quality! I went on a perfectly calm clear night with minimal moon shine. The BLT and hot coco were good too! I’m very satisfied! -Kevin

5.00A must-do tour on your visit to Big Island. Our guide James was the best, he took great care of us and had wonderful knowledge and stories about Mauna Kea and the surrounding areas, and really ensured that the photos were well-taken. The sunsets and star-gazing was unlike anything we’ve experienced before. Highly recommended!

5.00Kimo, aka James, was our guide. He was a local that was very informative and knowledgeable about the events on our tour. We made several stops along the way to the summit at the visitor’s center and all the telescopes. The he photos he took fo us were absolutely stunning, both at sunset and the starry sky. Kino also provided information about other tours his company performs. I will definitely tell my friends about this tour.
