We will take you to the summit of Mauna Kea to see the sunset and we will do stargazing afterward (not at the summit). Our most unique part is that our guides will take the photo of the sunset and stars for you using their DSLR camera.

All photos are free of charge and you will get it to your smartphone at the end of the tour.

Onizuka Astronomy Complex

Onizuka Visitor Information Station We will take a break at the Onizuka Visitor Center at an altitude of 2,800m or 9,000ft for early dinner and altitude acclimatization. We also change clothes for winter clothes here depending on the weather. Also gift shop is open for guests to purchase the items. (No food or drink sale)

Wes was our driver and James was the driver of the other van, they both were awesome! Wes was very informative and funny! It is cold up there! We had 30mins, so even if it’s warm and humid at the bottom, bring layers!

Great experience. Guide was knowledgeable and timely. Skies were clear, cold after dark so having a warm coat, gloves and some hot chocolate was appreciated.

The Mauna Kea Summit Tour & Star Gazing was amazing. We got picked up at our hotel and our guide, Wes was amazing. I took about an hour to Mauna Kea and Wes spoke about Hawaiian history, events, and places we passed. Wes was absolutely wonderful! The summit was freezing but they provided snow parks, which was absolutely necessary. After an amazing sunset we travel partially down Mauna Kea and did star gazing. Wes used a laser pointer to show the constellations. Great tour with a great guide.

We booked the tour because it was highly recommended, and the experience exceeded our expectation. Our tour guide Chris was very resourceful and knowledgeable of the area. He explained how to avoid altitude sickness and made sure we knew what to expect for each part of the tour. Cold gear like jackets, snow pants, and gloves were included, and the hot coco during star gazing was very much appreciated. The stars were absolutely stunning, and having your photo taken was the cherry on top. We would highly recommend this tour.

Our outing was perfectly clear for viewing but very cold (28 F) plus wind chills. Def take the jacket and snow pants provided. They made it more bearable. Frances was a super guide. He was so personable and knowledgeable about everything. He made sure everyone liked the photos he took of them even though his hands were freezing. He checked on everyone and made sure the group was comfortable. One person needed some oxygen near the end and he was right there to monitor them. We also had opportunities to stop at the visitor center restrooms going up and back down. There are also ports-potties at the top. Frances is top notch and made what could have been a scary drive one that was actually entertaining. He had the perfect playlist. The stargazing at the end was really interesting and the entire trip was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Our only regret is not getting a pic with Frances. Thanks for a great time!

If you want the best Mauna Kea experience, look no further. Our guide, James, was absolutely fantastic. Not only was he a safe driver, but he was also a wealth of knowledge about the island. He has such a positive energy that stayed with us long after the tour ended. He timed everything perfectly, getting us to a beautiful vantage point for the sunset and then to a secluded area for stargazing. Seeing millions of stars with zero light pollution was life-changing. Mahalo James!
