My partner and I have traveled to Japan before, but this trip was the first time we had travelled to Kyushu. We knew we wanted to go to Kumamoto and see things that may have been hard to travel to without a car, so for the first time together in Japan, we decided to look at guided tours. I have to say, this was one of the best experiences we had in Japan, both on this trip and including our previous ones! Megumi was so sweet, was very knowledgeable about the areas we visited, and went out of her way to make sure my partner and I were comfortable and having a good time. Lunch was amazing, and we even got to stop at a natural water spring before our reservation because we had a bit of extra time! Everything we did was just amazing, and I could not recommend this more! If people are looking to experience Mt. Aso, Takachiho Gorge, and more, I would say you definitely need to book this tour! It was all around one of the best times I had on my trip, and I am so glad we did it! And Megumi, if you are reading this, Cam and I had an amazing time with you this July! Thank you for your kindness and being the best tour guide ever! (And look, no earthquake! The praying to the shrines worked!! <3 )

  • An excellent day

The guide Memy and the driver Mr. Honda regaled us. Mr. Honda took detours to allow our youth to see the statues of OnePiece scattered on the road. Memy was super nice and efficient. We were able to do the planned activities. The crater was accessible (it depends not on the activity but on the wind and the activity of the volcano) which allowed us to get as close as possible. That's very impressive. The meal was really very good in a fairly typical restaurant. Having a driver allowed us to access places a little far from the stations (we made the whole trip by train). The climb to the temple was very refreshing, under the cover of trees. Very nice and Memy gave us plenty of information about the beliefs and habits of the locals around this place. And finally a moment to paddle on the water in the gorges funny and pleasant. A great, great day.

  • An exceptional day - The best tour we took in Japan.

We were picked up at our hotel in Kumamoto by our guide Mieko and driver in an air conditioned taxi. In the morning, Mieko took us to see the Mt Aso caldera area and the prararie, stopping for walks and photos at every stage. We had BBQ table-top BBQ for lunch at an independent local restaurant (incl. local red beef, chicken, veg, rice and soup - a very hearty lunch). Next stop was the beautiful shrine in the woods with all the steps and Tori gates and lanterns and the gigantic rock arch above it. Our final stop was the breathtaking gorge complete with an end of the day boat trip so it wasn’t so busy. This was followed by a lovely walk along the top of the gorge with amazing views at every turn. Mieko even squeezed in stops at three of the Anime ‘One Piece’ statues commemorating the earthquake relief efforts. Our day started at 9am and finished back at our hotel at 7pm. Throughout the day Mieko provided local insights, history and geological information. She answered all our questions with grace and kindness, we’ll always remember her fondly. 100% recommend this tour.

  • Very scenically beautiful and interesting too. Definitely worth the day

Mieko arrived with the driver, Sugi, promptly at the arranged time. While we were on our way to the Mt. Aso area, Mieko showed us a 3D map explaining to us how the area was formed by the first quake 90000yrs ago. She was most informative telling us the necessary history and myths of the area and pointing out areas of import and interest along the way. The scenery was beautiful. We were not able to drive up to the crater as there was too much activity but we were able to see much of the caldera and the smoke from Mt. Nakadake. We then drove to Takachiho and again, Mieko explained all the history and mythology of the area. We went to a lovely spring which has some of the purest water in Japan. Mieko filled our bottles so we could take some with us. She also brought some cups to fill so we could drink and taste the water right there. From there we were treated to a delicious Japanese BBQ lunch at a Michelin rated restaurant. It was delicious. Then on to explore the Gorge. It is a truly beautiful area to see. There is an easy walk along the pathway beside the river...but there are a lot of steps here. The steps are easy and split by some flat pathway, so fine for most people. This was a 10hr tour through stunning scenery with a most knowledgeable guide and a very safe driver. Highly recommend this

Our guide was amazing... knowledgeable, good English, fun to talk to... I can't say enough good about her. Then the sights were beautiful. Mt Aso was a little bit cloudy, which made it so we didn't get the full view of everything, but we got some breaks in the clouds which allowed us a decent view down into the crater. Takachiho Gorge is a photographer's dream, with many hues of green in the foliage, a picturesque stream, beautiful waterfalls, and amazing rock formations, that fit together in a breathtaking combination. The tour also included an amazing yakiniku lunch that everyone in our group loved. The bus driver for the tour was very polite and a careful driver. Overall, I can't recommend this tour highly enough. Every part of it was great!
