Mt Cook & Lake Tekapo Tour. Itinerary:
- Christchurch - Your tour starts in the stunning city of Christchurch. As we drive out of the city your guide will not only set the scene for your adventurous day but also point out and guide you past some of the area’s top highlights.
- Canterbury Plains – Departing Christchurch we then make our way through the impressive Canterbury plains with plenty of amazing New Zealand farmland and countryside to see along the way!
- Fairlie Bakehouse (10 mins) - A Classic New Zealand farming town hidden away in Mackenzie. Fairlie goes through some stunning colour changes especially come Autum, this is truly one of the best locations to sit and relax with one of their world-famous meat Pies from the Bakehouse. And this stop is also where we will pick up your lunch to keep you full of energy for the rest of the day.
- Lake Tekapo (5mins) – We head towards the famous blue lakes of Lake Tekapo but to get there first we must go through some impressive alpine passes with amazing views. As we come over the hill to Tekapo you will be stunned by amazing view of the lake.
- Church of the Good Shepherd (10 mins) – Once in the township of Tekapo you will have time to explore the very popular Church of the Good Shepherd, see the Mackenzie Sheep dog and get those Instagram worth shots of Lake Tekapo before we continue to Mt Cook.
- Lake Pukaki (10 mins) – Turning west we begin to enter the Aoraki National Park and Lake Pukaki begins to emerge in front of us. Lake Pukaki is one of the bluest lakes you will ever see and is stunningly framed by the backdrop of Aoraki/Mt Cook and the Southern Alps. We stop for some amazing photos and to just marvel at the sight that we are beholding. It’s not hard to see why many Lord of the Rings scene were filmed nearby and we will point them out for you.
- Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park (2 - 2.5 hours) – Arriving at Mt Cook Village, weather depending, we should get some amazing shots of the mountain itself. At 3724m, Aoraki/Mt Cook is New Zealand’s highest peak, however, the mountain can be viewed without any acclimatisation whatsoever from the village which is just 750m above sea level.
- While in the national park you have 2.5 hours free time to enjoy free walks/hikes or one of the extra optional activities. Some of our recommendations include: Kea Point or Tasman Glacier Walk, Scenic flights (see the region from the air and land on the Tasman Glacier) or Mt Cook Visitor Centre & Hermitage Hotel. Whatever you decide to do we will pick you up and drop you off where you need to go and make sure you are well looked after.
- Christchurch – Unfortunately after an amazing day of sightseeing it is time to return to Christchurch. Please note additional stops are taken into considerations for toilet breaks.
Please note: the Hooker Valley Track is currently CLOSED while the Department of Conservation works on replacing one of the swing bridges. This is expected to be complete in Autumn 2026 so the track will be inaccessible to the public until then.

3.00Drive is beautiful, destination fabulous. Lunch provided poor, and driver hardly engaged with group but to say a few thing about the cows, sheep. No history, no nothing. Didn’t feel she wanted to be there, so that was disappointing. The driver/guides can make all the difference

4.00This was a tour that was gifted to us and it was so beautiful. We were very lucky because our day started out cloudy but cleared right up so we have stunning views at Lake Tekapo and Mt. Cook. The van was comfortable and the provided lunch was very good. The only thing that made our trip less than 5 stars was our driver. She gave great information throughout the tour but came across as very irritated. She was much more warm and friendly when we spoke to her one on one. Very different feel throughout than the other tour we did while in New Zealand.
Would highly recommend to others !

5.00I joined a day tour from Christchurch to Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo, and it turned out to be such a memorable experience for me ! Although the skies were a little gloomy, our guide, Grant, truly made the entire day shine. He was thoughtful, attentive, and ensured that everyone felt comfortable and well taken care of. It’s clear that he is passionate about what he does, and that passion really elevated the experience for all of us. As I was travelling solo and did not rent a car, this tour was incredibly convenient and stress-free. It allowed me to take in the stunning landscapes without worrying about navigation or logistics. I’m truly grateful for such a well-run tour and for Grant’s dedication to making sure we had the best possible day. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting New Zealand, especially solo travellers looking for a comfortable and enriching way to explore these iconic sights.

5.00It is a long day with only 2 hours in the park and a choice of 2 of 3 places to visit/ hike. Choose one and spend your time there not rushing! Kea view was worth the climb but wished there was more time. Also did not like lunch.. not into buttered white bread and egg. Guide was great!

5.00Amazing sights. Mount Cook National Park is an amazing, stunning place. Kudos to the tour guide, Renee . Suggestion to make the stay at Mount Cook a half an hour longer. That would have been the sweet spot.

5.00Was a long day, a lot of traveling, but was so worth it. Lake Tekapo was stunning, but Mount Cook and everything around was a different level. One of the most incredible places I’ve ever been to. I’ve got to say the journey was made all the more tolerable and the whole experience all the more enjoyable by our outstanding guide Renee. I noticed what a precise careful driver she was, despite giving us really interesting and informative commentary through her head set. She took great care, no risks (unlike some of the nut jobs). She was a very bubbly, enthusiastic, smiley, helpful guide. Nothing was too much. I felt at ease all the time because of her absolute professionalism. A very big thank you, for making our day one that will live very long in the memory.

5.00Our guide was polite & provided a lot of important sight-related information while she drove us as we passed through different places enroute Aoraki/Cook, lake Tekapo, lake Pukaki etc. The lunch and snacks provided were good as well. The vehicle was comfortable. The sights were of course mesmerizing. Would definitely recommend the route for a 1 day trip with Cheeky Kiwi. Thanks.

5.00Absolutely lovely tour! Jay was fantastic and we were so very well taken care of! Full disclosure which has nothing to do with the Cheeky Kiwi- this is a VERY popular destination and absolutely covered in tourists. Think the Uffizi museum in Florence. That said, we had 13 folks in our group and it was wonderful. We learned a great deal, saw an amazing amount, and did it in incredible comfort. Thank you so much for showing us this slice of your beautiful country.

5.00Yesterday, I joined a day tour with Cheeky Kiwi and unfortunately lost a child‘s backpack at Lake Tekapo. It contained several important items, and honestly, I didn’t expect to see it again — Tekapo is such a busy place with people coming and going. I mentioned this to Natalie from Cheeky Kiwi, and although I wasn‘t very hopeful, she immediately offered to help. She contacted Jay and asked him to go back to the lake to search for the bag. This morning, Jay found it — and not only that, he went out of his way to deliver it to our next hotel, which was about 200–300 kilometers away from where we lost it. I was truly surprised and deeply touched by their kindness. This experience meant so much to me. A huge thank you to Natalie and Jay, and to the whole Cheeky Kiwi team. You showed us the heart of New Zealand. ❤️
