Do not book with this company. There are several better options. You need special, warm clothing for this tour. When I arrived to Catania, my luggage was lost by the airline. It was not delivered for three days. I had no clothing to wear for this tour, so I tried to cancel on the day of the tour, which was the day my luggage never showed up. The tour operator refused to allow me to cancel with a refund. In this case, there should have been a special allowance made because it was totally beyond my control and there was no way that I could hike the mountain with high heels and dressy travel clothes on. Because of EtnaTribe’s unwillingness to accommodate my unique situation, they took more than $100 of my money without regard to reasonable business practices and common sense. Their business policies are questionable and I would never book any tour whatsoever with them. Choose a different tour company. Don’t give this agency your business. I rebooked on a different day with a different company, SAT. They provided an excellent experience that was well worth my money. Try them instead of EtnaTribe.

Our driver/guide (Carmelo) was very prompt at picking us up in the city Really enjoyed the Etna part of this tour. As others have mentioned, this tour takes you to a sort of “base camp” of Etna. Taking a cable car and bus to a higher level with a guided group walk costs €80 per person. We opted to do so. We cannot compare had we chosen to stay at the lower level, but we thoroughly enjoyed our experience going higher. We were then supposed to have a brief tasting experience and then go on to Taormina. However, the rest of our group - who had chosen to stay at the base camp level - requested lunch at the tasting experience place. It was good that the tour could be flexible, but it meant a significantly longer time there. The entire party also had to agree what menu to take, which meant we ate and paid more than planned. Consequently, we got to Taormina later, but we weren’t too fussed as we found it too “touristy”. We arrived back close to 8pm.

Our guide, Carmelo, was fantastic and provided a very entertaining and educational tour. He took us to several vistas for short walks that included different views of the peak as well as different flora and flauna. Carmelo was funny and knowledgeable about Mount Etna. We did not opt for any of the additional activities at Mount Etna that require additional cost. We then were given options for lunch that we paid for ourselves. The food and wine at Enoteca Dell’Etna was great but we did not appreciate the hard sell on their wines, honey, oils and other products. It was perceived as a high pressure sell and kind of sketchy they way they brought us to a different tasting room and gift shop to pay for the lunch. Taormina was fantastic but we had very limited time due to the distance travelled and time it took for the lunch.

You should be aware that the cost of the tour doubles at Etna. If you want to visit the volcano properly, you have to pay another €80 each, in order to ride the cable car and take the 4x4 bus with alpinist guide to the maximum permitted altitudes. The other options are quad bike to lower altitudes, DIY hiking to a much lower altitude, or sitting in a cafe at the base of the volcano. It can be quite cold at the top of the volcano, and the tour guide recommends you wear a jacket to those who came unprepared. One hire place is before the cable car (€10) and one comes after the cable car (€5). On the day we visited, it was actually pretty warm up there, and quite a few people seemed happy in t-shirts. The tour guide forgot to take us to a lava cave, which was a little disappointing. He offered us extra time in Taormina as compensation. We were taken for wine/food tasting at a local Etna restaurant. You are all sat at a table together, and provided with food menus. You don't have to buy a meal, but it could feel a little awkward if you are the only person/couple not eating. Taormina was very nice. though there was a mix-up in the pick-up information, which was only sent to us via WhatsApp shortly before the actual pick-up time. The pick-up was on the other side of town to where we thought it was, and we simply refused to make a mad dash for it. Instead, he picked us up from where we were. It was a great excursion, but beware the exorbitant extra costs, which are not explicit when you first book.
