Mount Rushmore National Memorial
If the weather is good we go to Mt. Rushmore first for 1½ hours. There is a 14 minute video about the carving, the sculptor Gutzon Borglum, and workers. The Lincoln Borglum Museum has some great displays about Borglum, his family and his works, the mountain and machinery and the workers. The Presidential Trail is a gradually inclining walk that goes under the faces in the rock rubble with great spots for pictures of the individual faces. If you go further there is a strenuous walk down to the Sculptor’s Studio (open only in the summer months) then back up to the viewing terrace. The Avenue of Flags represents all 50 states and the territories, and their respective dates of admission to the Union. There is also a new Youth Exploration area recently opened. The large gift shop has many items. The Carvers’ Café and an ice cream shop are available for refreshments. As we leave we stop for a picture at the side profile of George Washington.
Crazy Horse Memorial
From Mt. Rushmore we drive 30 minutes to Crazy Horse Memorial. We allow 1½ hours here, or more if we eat lunch in the Laughing Water Restaurant. This is a 3 sided sculpture which will be the largest in the world when completed. There is a 20 minute video about the carving and the sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and his family that are doing the work. The North American Indian Museum has items from many different Indian tribes, with 90% of the items being donated. The gift shop has many Native made items for sale. Ziolkowski’s workshop and the log home he built, filled with antiques, are available to walk through. There is a Native American Cultural Center where you can watch Natives making items for sale, as well as display items to see and touch. There is a brass Nature Gate and a huge statue of Fighting Stallions.

5.00From the communication provided ahead of the tour, to the prompt arrival for our pickup, to our absolutely delightful guide, Nick, we couldn’t have been more pleased. We had thought we’d be on a tour with several others. Instead, my wife and I were given a personalized tour. We had plenty of time at Mount Rushmore and at Crazy Horse Mountain. In our drive through Custer State Park, we saw bison, donkeys, pronghorns and bighorn sheep. And best of all, throughout our tour, Nick provided all manner of details that we would have never known had we tried to visit on our own. We felt that we were with a friend from almost the moment we climbed into the van. Fantastic job, Nick!

5.00Ann was very knowledgeable of the area and added a personal connection making the tour enjoyable and informative. Blue Bell Lodge was a very good lunch stop. Vehicle was clean and comfortable. For a private, all day tour the cost was most reasonable. Online reservation process was easy and questions quickly answered by phone. We were fortunate to see many bison close up in preparation for the Buffalo Roundup later in the week.

5.00Our tour guide Lin was amazing! He had so much knowledge to share. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer Park, so much we saw. This tour is the way to see it all. We know others that drove it and did not get the same experience and information we did!

5.00Affordable Adventures Rapid City was excellent from beginning to end. Ann was great in helping with details such as which motels/hotels that met our expectations and which restaurants were unique to Rapid City that we might visit. Bruce was our tour guide for the three tours and is an absolute gem. Bruce is a Rapid City native and has insider knowledge that few can share. Courteous, knowledgeable, on-time, and often asks if he can answer any questions that may arise during the tours; better add very patient when interrupted during his presentations. Stephanie was great in getting the financials to us in a very timely manner so that we knew exactly what to expect cost-wise for our 3 tours. It is hard to beat a well run, independent, local tour agency and Affordable Adventures(AARC) fits that bill completely. Would I use AARC again? Absolutely. When you want the maximum information and overall experience in a short amount of time, AARC will make your South Dakota trip memorable without being exhausting; a huge plus for 50+ year old travelers. The other two tours: Rapid City tour and the Badlands, Wall Drug tour.
