Mount Rushmore National Memorial

If the weather is good we go to Mt. Rushmore first for 1½ hours. There is a 14 minute video about the carving, the sculptor Gutzon Borglum, and workers. The Lincoln Borglum Museum has some great displays about Borglum, his family and his works, the mountain and machinery and the workers. The Presidential Trail is a gradually inclining walk that goes under the faces in the rock rubble with great spots for pictures of the individual faces. If you go further there is a strenuous walk down to the Sculptor’s Studio (open only in the summer months) then back up to the viewing terrace. The Avenue of Flags represents all 50 states and the territories, and their respective dates of admission to the Union. There is also a new Youth Exploration area recently opened. The large gift shop has many items. The Carvers’ Café and an ice cream shop are available for refreshments. As we leave we stop for a picture at the side profile of George Washington.

Crazy Horse Memorial

From Mt. Rushmore we drive 30 minutes to Crazy Horse Memorial. We allow 1½ hours here, or more if we eat lunch in the Laughing Water Restaurant. This is a 3 sided sculpture which will be the largest in the world when completed. There is a 20 minute video about the carving and the sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and his family that are doing the work. The North American Indian Museum has items from many different Indian tribes, with 90% of the items being donated. The gift shop has many Native made items for sale. Ziolkowski’s workshop and the log home he built, filled with antiques, are available to walk through. There is a Native American Cultural Center where you can watch Natives making items for sale, as well as display items to see and touch. There is a brass Nature Gate and a huge statue of Fighting Stallions.

Russ was our driver today. This was our first full day in South Dakota. This tour was a great overview of the area and Russ shared recommendations of other things to do and see. He picked us up right on time at our hotel. We felt very safe. It was nice to be able to look and enjoy the area without having to navigate and figure out where we were going. We saw places we would not have known about on our own. Russ took pictures of us along the way. We saw bison, marmot, prairie dogs, prong horns, and white tail deer. Russ was very knowledgable of the area and of historical facts. We enjoyed our day!

Wonderful day seeing Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial and Custer State Park. Our guide, Bruce, was excellent! So knowledgeable and he provided a wealth of information during the trip and as we arrived and departed and answered any questions we had. Would definitely recommend this tour!

Bruce was a fantastic guide. We were picked up on downtown Rapid City and drove the short distance to the Black Hills. He knew so much about the entire area and especially Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer SP. He made suggestions at each stop and let us tour each at our own pace. We had the best time at the State Park looking for the wildlife and he knew where they would be. As we drove back he pointed intresting things in the towns too. We would highly recommend this tour and Bruce!

We thought this would be a large group tour and were pleasantly surprised to find that we had a personal tour. Trevor was our guide and is a fantastic job. He was knowledgeable, fun, and super nice! Could not have asked for a better experience!

From the communication provided ahead of the tour, to the prompt arrival for our pickup, to our absolutely delightful guide, Nick, we couldn’t have been more pleased. We had thought we’d be on a tour with several others. Instead, my wife and I were given a personalized tour. We had plenty of time at Mount Rushmore and at Crazy Horse Mountain. In our drive through Custer State Park, we saw bison, donkeys, pronghorns and bighorn sheep. And best of all, throughout our tour, Nick provided all manner of details that we would have never known had we tried to visit on our own. We felt that we were with a friend from almost the moment we climbed into the van. Fantastic job, Nick!

Ann was very knowledgeable of the area and added a personal connection making the tour enjoyable and informative. Blue Bell Lodge was a very good lunch stop. Vehicle was clean and comfortable. For a private, all day tour the cost was most reasonable. Online reservation process was easy and questions quickly answered by phone. We were fortunate to see many bison close up in preparation for the Buffalo Roundup later in the week.

Tour was great. Met all my expectations. Nick was an excellent guide. Weird that Viator will not let Affordable Adventures pick customers up at their hotel. Otherwise a great day.
