What To Expect

Pompeii Archaeological Park

After pickup from your hotel or the Naples train station, take a 30-minute drive to Pompeii, an ancient Roman city that was entirely destroyed by the sudden eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD. The largest archaeological site in Europe, today Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When you arrive, your guide will pick up your group’s pre-ordered tickets and lead you on a 2-hour walking tour of the fascinating grounds. Witness the destruction first-hand as you visit Pompeii’s most famous sites, including the Forum, the Thermal Baths, Vetti's House and the Lupanare brothel, giving you a glimpse into daily life during the Pax Romana. Today you can see shapes of objects — even bodies — that were buried beneath the volcanic ash and pumice.

Vesuvius National Park

After your tour, enjoy a pizza lunch with your group followed by some free time to browse the shops. Then board the coach and drive 40 minutes to legendary Mt Vesuvius. Embark on a moderate hike up the volcano with your guide. When you reach the summit at 3,900 feet (1,200 meters), you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the picturesque Bay of Naples from east to west. Peer down into the crater and see plumes of steam issuing from the sleeping, but still active, volcano! There is a rest point where you can choose to wait for your group if you do not wish to climb all the way to the top, but the hike is worth the effort. After your Mt Vesuvius hike, relax on the drive back to Naples in the early evening.

We enjoyed taking this tour. The guided tour of Pompeii was excellent and gave us a great idea of what we were looking at. The hike on mount Vesuvius was pretty strenuous. We had about an hour and a half. It took us about an hour to go up and 15 minutes to go down. I would definitely do this again.

There was so much lack of communication on this tour, I highly don’t recommend it for those cruising or if you have a tight schedule & don’t have 2 hours to waste doing nothing. We arrived over 20 minutes early to the Naples Cruise terminal where we set our pick up spot, but the tour never told us exactly where to meet at the terminal/what the tour guide is wearing/if the tour guide was holding a sign/if the tour guide was holding a sign with our name on it so we were frantic trying to figure out where to go so I messaged them on viator directly but no one responded. 5 minutes go past our tour time and I get a message from the tour on whatsapp asking where we were (they never provided a whatsapp # prior or else I would’ve contacted them through there.) I told them we’re lost & don’t know where to go. She finally sends a picture of the meetup spot & tells us to hurry up. Turns out its a lady holding a sign with our names on it (would’ve been nice to know beforehand thats how they were doing it). She immediately tells us that she doesn’t know if we’ll have time for Vesuvius because it depends on the time that the tour booked? Which didn’t make sense because we booked this tour for Vesuvius and Pompeii so why wouldn’t you have tickets? The tour also doesn’t tell you that they take stops to pick up other tourists. We made one stop & waited 20 minutes just sitting on the bus. We get to Pompeii & the lady says the tour guide isn’t here yet & she needs to get our tickets so she tells us to go walk around & come back in 25 minutes. Pompeii tour was okay, the tour guide was nice but he kept rambling about random things & it was hard to understand him through the mic. After Pompeii, we get lunch included at the place next to it. I guess the tour had full day and half day options so most of our group left while we stayed and then eventually other tourists showed up for the Vesuvius part. The lady says to come back in an hour and a half. The place we eat at is probably the worst italian food and worst service I’ve ever gotten. The waiter was so rude, he was yelling at one of the tourists for not knowing what he wants. You get the option of salad, pizza, and pasta. He said no pizza because it takes 30 minutes so he wasn’t wanting anyone to order it. Which is odd considering the tour literally says pizza lunch? My boyfriend ends up getting the pizza (which only took 10 minutes to come out) and I got the pasta. The pizza tasted like canned marinara & the crust was well undercooked it still had the dough taste. My gnocchi pasta was just thick chunks of pasta I ate maybe 20% of it because there was no flavor. I’m usually not that picky with the quality of food, but this was pretty bad…. the family we sat with ordered 3 waters that the waiter did not charge them for so I asked for 2 waters after them & he SIGHS and says, “I’m gonna have to charge you.” How can you not charge them and charge us? Even the family was so confused and they were saying, “I guess they just do what they want & charge what they want?” Everyone at our table was laughing because we couldn’t believe how rude he was towards us and the other tourists around us. We finish lunch within 45 minutes, so we have an extra 45 minutes just waiting around until our tour for Mt. Vesuvius….When its finally time, they hand us off to ANOTHER tour guide to take us to Vesuvius. This tour guide was probably the BEST part of our trip because he was SO friendly and nice, I wish I got his name but he looked in his low 30s, glasses, & a beard. I asked him how long the Vesuvius tour was because at this point it was cutting close to our cruise ship boarding time (it was past 2:30pm, our cruise boards at 5:30pm, & we were still over 30 min away from Vesuvius). He ensures us that they have a separate bus to take us straight to the port to make it on time & leave at 4pm whereas the rest of the tourists leave at 4:30pm. They drop us off at Mt. Vesuvius & its a self-guided tour. We finish hiking (it took maybe 45min) & just like the guy said, they had a separate bus to get us to the cruise. It was only my boyfriend & I on the bus back which was nice. Overall, this tour caused us so much stress I don’t think its worth the hassle, but I’m just glad we made it back to the ship on time. We spent a total of almost 2 hours just waiting around when I feel like it should be immediate stop and go’s, especially if you’re on a time crunch. They need to communicate exactly where to meet (saying “we’ll be right OUTSIDE the EXIT of the terminal with a sign that has your name on it”) and also letting us know that we will be handed off to different tour guides & other tourists will be coming and going. If you have time in your day to go with the flow of this tour, then I would say go for it.
Pompei definitely worth it, Versuvius was a bit disappointing.

Good communication about pick-up service and location. The arrival at Pompei went a bit messy but in the end it was well arranged. Guided tour lasted two hours. Then pizza, pasta and salad. Then the excursion to Vesuvius. Not a very easy climb for older people. It's nice to see, but I expected a little more of it.

Very nice day, well balanced! Guide speaking very good French in Pompeii, interesting and friendly! And then lunch pizza, beer or cola! Exactly what I needed. To complete the day, Vesuvius, where you have time to walk to its crater and then back to the bus! Very well organized!!

Pick up was on time, mini bus with bad AC, first was the expected stop in every viator excursion: the demonstration store, this time was for limoncello, after the 20 min we went to Mt Vesuvius, hiking to the top of the volcano they give you like a hour and 10 minutes to complete the hike and pictures, the we went for lunch, chaotic experience, bad organization at the restaurant, the 1st thing they tell you is to not order pizza because take a lot of time so the other options were pasta or salad, well we order the pasta thinking in spaghetti and they brought gnocchi and it was terrible, then after lunch was Pompeii with a guide, a lot of information like we need all that info for a college course, taking pictures when we could and the guide didn’t like that, we waisted so much time in that “college class” that we didn’t have enough time for good pictures in the main plaza of Pompeii. After this we went back to Naples with the same bad minivan with bad AC, I picked this excursion because my timing in Naples was limited so if you have time get a better one.
