One of the world's biggest fresh water sources, Lake Khuvsgul and its amazing surroundings are home to several of Mongolia’s ethnic minorities as well as a refuge for a wide variety of wildlife. Khuvsgul is truly a highlight of any trip to Mongolia. Today we take a hiking trip through the forests and meadows nearby the lake. Lying at about 1650 meters above sea level, surrounded by mountains that rise over 3100 meters (10170 feet), the waters of Khuvsgul are deep and spectacularly clear and pure. We will hike to a beautiful vantage point, locally known as ‘Khyasaa’ (in Mongolian- steep cliff), from which we get a marvelous view over the ‘Blue Pearl’. In the evening, we return to our camp for a second and last night by the lake’s shores.

Chinggis Khan Statue Complex
After breakfast, we leave the park and drive to the newly constructed Chinggis Khan Monument. Rising 40 meters in height over the surrounding steppes, this mighty structure plays a major symbol to the renewing Mongolian nation, after more than 300 years of foreign sovereignty over its people and territory. We then head for Terelj National Park. The park features unique rock formations, scenic valleys, a winding river, and restful groves of trees. Many nomads live in the park itself, where they find good grazing for their animals. We will visit a nomadic family and take the opportunity to learn about their unique way of life.

This morning we take an easy hike to the famous Turtle Rock, a symbol of wisdom and longevity to the Mongolian people. We then continue hiking to Ariabal Temple. The temple has been recently reconstructed, after the original temple had been destroyed during the communist purges of the 1930’s. A great site of tranquility, it functions today as a meditation center to Buddhist monks. After early lunch, we leave the park and drive to Ulaanbaatar. In the evening we will enjoy a farewell dinner, followed with a trip to the top of the Zaisan Hill, to enjoy the view of the city at night.

My girlfriend and I booked a trip with Mongolian Ways as they were the most flexible and professional ones of the agencies I contacted. Our very specific location requests were incorporated in the itinerary of our trip. We traveled with a driver and a guide in one car by ourselves but I heard that you can also travel with them in larger groups (this probably saves a bit of money as well). We traveled from Ulaanbaatar to the Gobi Desert, central Mongolia and ended the trip in the lake region in the north near the Russian border (close to Lake Baikal). We thoroughly enjoyed the amazing vast space of Mongolia, the nature, the cultural sites, but specifically the chance to interact with local families. We spent time with three families being involved in food preparation and cooking with them and afterwards sharing a meal. In one case we even were involved in milking the horses and yaks as well as fermenting the milk (obviously voluntarily, not a must). For us this was one of the highlights of the trip. The car was very comfortable (a Lexus off-road SUV with air-conditioning), the driver was very good in the rough terrain and our guide who spoke very good English was knowledgeable and kind and always willing to address our specific requests. I can highly recommend Mongolian Ways as they delivered what they promised, were super professional, and very flexible which was important for us.
