Step back in time aboard the Gourmet Express, where elegant details like gleaming silverware, crystal-clear glassware, etched glass partitions, rich mahogany paneling, and warm natural wood tones set the stage for a classic rail dining experience. This beautifully restored train reflects the timeless Napa Valley Wine Train tradition that began with its first voyages in 1989.

Enjoy a leisurely three-hour daytime journey traveling roundtrip from Downtown Napa to St. Helena. Along the way, savor a relaxed lunch featuring three sumptuous courses, thoughtfully served aboard an antique 1915 Pullman dining car.

This experience is perfect for guests seeking a slower pace, historic charm, and a memorable Napa Valley dining journey.

Napa Valley Wine Train

Travel through the lush Napa Valley countryside and be transported back in time. Back to the romance and luxury of the golden age of train travel of the early 1900s, when guests explored the trains beyond their private quarters. Back to a time when a journey was meant to be savored from start to finish. Guests aboard the Gourmet Express experience both dining and lounge service, with some courses of your gourmet meal served in each car. Heading North, first seating guests begin their journey in the dining car, enjoying their fresh Sonoma greens or soup du jour and choice of entrée—roasted tenderloin of beef, lemon thyme roasted chicken, or gemelli pasta among them—followed by dessert with complimentary coffee or tea in one of the lounge cars on the return trip. Second seating guests sample appetizers and beverages in one of our lounge cars en route to St. Helena, and choice of soup or salad, entrée, and dessert on the way back to the station. Fresh California gourmet meals are crafted by Executive Chef Donald Young and his passionate culinary team in one of three onboard kitchens. Located immediately next to each dining area, guests are encouraged to explore the Train and visit the kitchen cars and see our chefs in action. Choose the Gourmet Express for lunch, when the sun is bright and high in the sky. Or for something even more romantic, join us onboard for evening dinner. In the spring and summer, the long, warm California twilight means that when you take your Wine Train journey, Napa Valley’s vineyards are bathed in beautiful, golden hour sunlight for most of the way, with the opportunity to see some spectacular Napa sunsets. In the Fall and the Winter, when the train departs after sunset, you will experience the romance and adventure of an antique train traveling through the dark, starlit Napa Valley night. In the spirit of traditional rail seating, you may share the experience—and a table—with another party. Need a bit of privacy? Private seating is available in the Champagne Vista Dome on dinner trains and some private tables (for two) are available on lunch trains.

It was very relaxing and fun. The food and drinks were great. Cars were clean and staff was helpful and pleasant. I would go again if given the chance

We planned this experience for my 50th birthday, so it was a once-in-a-lifetime splurge! I felt it was totally worth it! Beautifully maintained, great staff, and a delicious lunch all while taking in the views.

This was so much fun and well worth it! We parked at the meeting point and hung around Oxbow for a bit prior. We got to sample some wines at the station gift shop and pick up some souvenirs before heading out. The boarding process and photo ops were well organized and easy. The inside of the train is quaint and cozy especially on that chilly morning. The food was delicious and we had a complimentary glass of bubbly before ordering a couple of flights. The staff were friendly and accommodating too as we had asked for the heat to be turned down after a while because it got a bit too toasty. My brother and dad are quite tall so they let us walk around the other cars after dessert and apologized for the tight squeeze in the dessert car. Totally not anyone's fault but they were so kind to acknowledge it! We actually would have done the grape stomp package but we had been to Grgich Hills the trip prior to opted just for the lunch and it was lovely. I couldn't be more pleased. Didn't think we'd get the photos but they were also SO lovely so of course we picked up some prints and a bottle of wine on the way out. I have told everyone who will listen about this experience, even those originally from CA. Thank you Napa Wine Train! We'll be back!

Egg Benedict, the salmon was so darn good. Everything was hot. 1st time having egg Benedict. Would eat again.

The whole experience was wonderful. From our welcome glass of champagne and on. Entitled the Legacy Tour we were guided by the lovely Marina, who talked about the countryside. Our terrific wine guide, Oscar, helped us through 3 tastings in the open air car. We had a 4 course meal and stopped at the Napa sign for pictures. We also stopped at 2 different wineries for additional tastings. It was absolutely magical. Thank you.

Don't miss out on this experience. Im rating this as excellent because my husband and I had such a great anniversary. The staff is so nice and welcoming. The legacy experience is something my partner and I will be doing again! I highly recommend this activity if your visiting Napa Valley. I was amazed how clean and well put together both the train/ station are. I had the pleasure of meeting Bertha, she is so sweet and the one who is in charge of maintaining a clean environment at the Wine train. Not only is this place spotless but the food is delicious ! I enjoyed every second of this !

Train ride was just okay and the food was just average. There was no narration; it would have been nice to get some history on the area or details on the wineries. I don’t feel that it was worth the money.

The wine train experience was relaxing the scenery was beautiful, we bought wine at the wine store prior to our train departure and had them chilled and sipped during the ride. We did the express lunch and I loved sitting in the cushy chairs and just relaxing enjoying the view prior to having lunch in the dining car. I felt like it was a good way to cheat and not go to allllll the vineyards since our time was compressed in Napa, while sampling wines from local vineyards. They took a photo of my friend and I that you were able to retrieve complimentary digitally, which was lovely.

My husband & I experienced the gourmet lunch trip for my birthday. The staff were very friendly, and knowledgeable with the information they shared. Kelli took care of us in the dining car, and Claudia in the lounge. Both ladies were terrific, and both acknowledged my birthday several times. To top it all off, the food was amazing. We're local, but this was the first time we've been on the train. I highly recommend it for locals and visitors alike.
