Negombo Lagoon
Negombo Lagoon is a beautiful coastal waterway located in Negombo, Sri Lanka, just a short distance from Bandaranaike International Airport. Spanning approximately 35 square kilometers, the lagoon is connected to the Indian Ocean and is an important part of Sri Lanka’s wetland ecosystem. Natural Beauty & Biodiversity Surrounded by mangroves, marshlands, and coconut plantations, Negombo Lagoon is home to a rich variety of wildlife. The calm waters support diverse bird species, including herons, kingfishers, and egrets, making it a great spot for birdwatching. The lagoon is also abundant in fish, prawns, and crabs, sustaining the local fishing communities.

5.00First dam the tour of Negombo in a well maintained tuktuk with plenty of fresh air flowing through. Very welcomed on a hot day. We even had music playing while we were being driven around. Visited many places listed as worth a visit including St Mary’s church and a couple of markets. Plenty of photo opportunities where our guide Nisham was instrumental in taking photos of us two. We even visited the prison! Then onto the boat tour around the lagoon. Again, plenty to see and many many photo opportunities, where again, Nisha took photos of us. Then came a stop on a sand bank where we got out of the boat and walked int he water, when we returned we had a multitude of mixed freshly sliced fruits and fresh coconut water to drink from the coconut. All prepped by Nisham and the boatman. So serene and tranquil. Back to the tuktuk where we were taken to many different temples and shown around them with excellent commentary from Nisham who was highly knowledgeable. I cannot recommend Nisham and his tour more highly. He is such a nice guy, polite and friendly and warm but not overly intrusive. Had a good amount of knowledge about all the places we visited. We went to the fish market, which is definitely worth a visit and to a place where fish is dried in the beautiful Sri Lankan sun. And the highlight is this tour for us was feeding the monkeys in the mangroves. The boat moves close enough, where the monkeys decide to come onto the boats and eat fruit and nuts (or not) and we put water in a coconut shell for them. No pressure and no touching the monkeys so I consider this completely ethical for the monkeys.

5.00Great tour! First a Tuk Tuk around town visiting lots of churches & Buddhist temples. An interesting and informative visit to the fish market. We visited a Dutch Fort and also saw the prison. We then went on a boat ride on the lagoon. Very nice and scenic. We had a picnic on the water and the. Onto Monkey Island. They monkeys even came onto our boat. Very fun day! Highly recommend.

5.00This was a lovely way to see the Negombo lagoon. Having refreshments on the sand bank in the water was fun. Our guide was informative and helped make the short trip very enjoyable.

5.00A really nice private boat trip to explore the lagoon. You can see monkeys that come right up to the boat, and you can feed them. If you’re lucky, you may also see monitor lizards and enjoy a peaceful time in the middle of the lagoon.
Monkey Island here we come.

5.00Lovely tour of the lagoon with Nishan. We stopped off in some shallow water for a paddle and a bite to eat , then visited the monkeys on the island who were clearly used to the boats , liked being fed and very comfortable around humans. Relaxing tour , around an hour and if you haven’t done this before , worth doing.

5.00The number one activity to do in Negombo. Can recommend the afternoon because of cooler temperatures. The tour guide was exceptional. He played fantastic music for us in the tuk tuk on the way yo the Lagoon. The fruit platter in the Lagoon was delightful and fresh and the experience feeding the monkeys was terrific. We had a truly great day!!!
