Visit Alay was excellent from start to finish. They were responsive during planning, easy to book, and thorough with pre-departure briefings. They embody what a proper tour operator should be. The trip pushed me outside my comfort zone, and I loved it. A lot of that credit goes to our driver, Mendibai. I’ve done enough overland and off-road travel to know the difference between skilled and merely adequate. Mendibai is the former. He’s just displaced Mohammed — who drove for me in Socotra — to claim a spot in my personal Top 4 drivers of all time. That’s the benchmark. The Pamir Highway demands technical precision, composure, and constant adaptation. He delivered all 3. I felt safe throughout, which on that terrain is not a small thing. What sets him apart is his awareness. Our group came from different countries, different personalities. He kept us practical on spending without cutting corners on what actually mattered, including sleeping arrangements (no mix-gender room sharing and single occupancy where needed). That kind of judgment shows in how he picks accommodations each night. His helpfulness is consistent and unpretentious: picture stops, supply runs, pulling over for Soviet-era bus stops, sharing bread or water with other people on the road. No one was made to feel like an inconvenience. His English is solid. Clear communication. Translation. Negotiation when needed. A real asset on this route. And beyond driving, he shares regional knowledge that’s genuinely useful, well-timed, and never overdone. What can I say, Visit Alay + Mendibai is the best possible outcome on a road like this. Huge thanks!

We did the Osh to Dushanbe 9 day tour with our driver Sadyk and it was incredible! We started with 1 night yurt camping near Lenin Peak before heading over the border to Tajikistan. I felt safe with Sadyks driving and he was always open to stopping for photos. He is a really funny guy and speaks very good english which I was very grateful for as his personality and the conversations with him in the car made the trip 10x better. My personal highlights were Tulpar Kol, Karakul, Maljuran Yurt Camp, and Bagu Village. We were originally going to go to Jizeu Village, but due to a landslide that had hit the only bridge connecting the village, we instead stayed at Bagu Village which turned out to be fantastic! It was really fun playing football with Sadyk versus a group of kids from the village. The only admission fees we experienced was to the hot springs near Yamchun Fortress, which cost 30 somoni. The atmosphere throughout the Pamirs is magical, I would describe it as a more mountainous and desolate version of Kyrgyzstan. Everywhere you look is covered by mountains, and driving along the afghan border was a very interesting experience, seeing the people and houses just on the other side of a thin river. On the final day of the tour all restaurants were closed due to Eid and Sadyk managed to find a local family who invited us to lunch in their home. They were so welcoming and friendly and I’m really glad that we got to experience the Eid celebration with them. In conclusion it was a lovely experience and I am incredibly grateful for having Sadyk as our driver, without him it wouldn’t have been the same!

We opted for the 9 days private Pamir Trip from Osh to Dushabe with Visit Alay. The driver and guide assigned to us was Kuba, he was professional and extremely experience, he knows the entire route at the back of his hands. Everything went exceptionally smoothly.. However, we must admit that the mountain route along the Wakhan Valley stretch was absolutely terrible, single lane hairpin turns with vertical cliffs (but the view was spectacular) but Kuba handled the broken dirt track like a pro and he made us feel completely safe. Thank you Kuba, you deserve 5 stars for making our adventure so enjoyable and amazing.

We travelled from Osh to Dushanbe (8 day private trip/tour) along the Pamir Highway with Visit Alay, and it was easily the best trip we’ve ever done. What truly made this trip exceptional were our driver Joomart and our guide Muhammed from Alichur. I can’t emphasize enough how incredible they both were. Joomart is an extremely skilled and calm driver, you’re navigating rough terrain, high mountain passes, and unpredictable conditions, and he handled everything with total confidence. We always felt completely safe, even in the most remote areas and during tough weather conditions. Muhammed (from Alichur) brought the entire journey to life. Being from Alichur, he had a deep, authentic connection to the region that you simply can’t replicate. He shared stories, local knowledge, and cultural context that made every stop more meaningful. Beyond that, he was genuinely one of the kindest and most humble people we’ve met, always checking in on us, making sure we were comfortable, and going out of his way to help with anything we needed. Both of them were also hilarious, there were so many moments of laughter throughout the trip that made long drives feel short. Their energy, kindness, and authenticity turned what would already be an amazing trip into something truly unforgettable. By the end, it didn’t feel like a tour it felt like we were travelling with friends. The route itself was unreal. Starting in Osh, we passed through Sary Mogol with views (when the clouds cleared) toward Lenin Peak, then climbed into the high-altitude landscapes of the Pamirs. Crossing the Ak-Baital Pass at nearly 5,000m felt surreal. We stayed in places like Alichur, Murghab, Khorog, Langar, Khalikum, and drove through the stunning Wakhan Valley, visiting Yamchun Fortress and the Bibi Fatima Hot Springs. Hiking into Jizeu village was another highlight completely remote and untouched. This is not a luxury trip and it’s important people understand that. You’re travelling through very remote, developing regions. Roads are rough, weather can change quickly (we even experienced a snowstorm), and amenities are basic. But that’s exactly what makes it so special. The homestays were consistently warm, clean, and welcoming. Every family we stayed with was incredibly kind, and the food was simple but great. It felt like the most authentic, local experience possible. If you want something real, meaningful, and unforgettable this is it. We did this as a couple, and it exceeded every expectation. 10/10 – best trip we’ve ever been on, and a huge part of that is thanks to Joomart and Muhammed.

We had a great experience travelling with Visit Alay through the Pamirs! Everything was well organized: We got help organizing visas for the Gorno-Badakhshan province and the staff at Visit Alay gave us a useful introduction on our first day. The itinerary itself was fantastic, and the overall travel experience was fantastic thanks to our driver, Kokon, who was both kind and considerate. I got some problems with altitude sickness, but he was always helpful and reassuring. In the end, the problem did not affect my overall experience thanks to him. Kokon is also a very careful driver. I have travelled through Tajikistan before, and had some bad experiences on the road. Not this time: Although the standard of the roads may vary a lot, we felt safe all the time. He communicates very well in English, has a great sense of humor and makes everyone feel included. In the end, we felt that Kokon had become our friend. We would recommend him and Visit Alay to everyone travelling through the Pamirs.

What an incredible adventure over high passes, through stunning landscapes, and along the Afghan border! Our driver Kokon was a delight and had good English. We stayed in guesthouses with shared rooms and often a hot shower. Food was decent if a bit samey. Highly recommended to see the unique Pamirs region (with hikes too) and take the slow road to Dushanbe.

Excellent tour, Joomart was a great guide. Good English and very friendly. Most of the guesthouses were really good and provided good food. The last guesthouse wasn’t great but it was under renovation. The views on the tour are incredible.
