Hidden in the heart of the city centre of Amsterdam is a small wonder: Our Lord in the Attic Museum. Visitors will be going on a journey in a unique well-preserved canal house from the 17th century. Narrow corridors and stairs lead to historically decorated living quarters, kitchens and bedsteads, ending in what is literally the highlight of the museum: a complete church in the attic.

Our Lord in the Attic Museum Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder
This Catholic church dates from 1663. While it was prohibited to celebrate mass, the authorities turned a blind eye. Indeed, the church symbolises the characteristic (religious) tolerance of the Netherlands, established by the Dutch in the sixteenth century under Willem of Orange. Freedom of religion and of conscience are central themes at the museum today. It makes Our Lord in the Attic far more than a museum: it is a special place in which to contemplate and to experience. Extension Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder is the oldest museum in the city, second only to the Rijksmuseum. A unique monument from the Golden Age, it has been preserved largely due to initiatives taken by private individuals. In 2015, the monument was extended into an additional building at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 38, where the new entrance vestibule was established. The two buildings are connected to each other via an underground passage. Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder is now a proper in situ museum – where history is tangible and everything is old and authentic, where visitors can truly experience the building and its story, and where a link can even be established with current events.

This is definitely a place worth visiting. It is remarkable that a church this size was constructed through the attics of adjoining houses. It is also in an unexpected location. Audio tour comes with the ticket and is interesting and not too long.

Museum Our Lord in the Attic is truly one of Amsterdam’s hidden treasures! From the outside, it looks like an ordinary canal house, but inside, it reveals a fascinating story of faith, resilience, and creativity. Walking through the narrow staircases and beautifully preserved rooms felt like stepping back in time. The highlight, of course, is the secret church tucked away in the attic, an absolutely breath taking space that left me in awe. The audio guide was excellent, offering just the right amount of detail without feeling overwhelming, and the staff were warm, welcoming, and clearly passionate about the museum’s history. It’s a powerful reminder of Amsterdam’s tolerance and rich cultural past. A must-visit for anyone who enjoys discovering hidden gems and meaningful stories beyond the usual tourist spots!

Even for a born and raised Amsterdammer like me, this visit was a big surprise. Much more than just the interesting hiding church in itself. Really a glimpse into the history of Amsterdam, of the religions and especially of the tolerance at that time. Highly recommended.

This was an unexpected gem in Amsterdam. Very impressive, excellent audio guide and much bigger than you think from outside. Thoroughly recommend a visit. Staff were super friendly as well.

The rooms are a feat of engineering. The altar and pews was recognisable to me, who was raised Catholic. It is hard to comprehend the need to pray in these secular times, but these people built a small miracle in the attic.

Lots of stairs, but very interesting. Audio gave details unique details. Able to get close and truly examine artifacts. It gave you a real feel for what it was like for folks in the olden times.

An amazing story, especially one Catholics would enjoy. I was able to get a ticket the day of my visit. The audio guide was nice for a self-paced tour.
