Prairie in the heart of a city? You can find it in east Dallas and I'm excited to share it with you. The Blackland prairie ecosystem is a unique and diverse landscape dominated by beautiful wildflowers and grasses. It is estimated that less than 1% of this special part of nature remains statewide. It is home to countless species of plants, birds, and bugs (as well as other small critters). On this tour we will explore prairie remnants near White Rock Lake and discuss their history, ecology, and traditional uses by Native peoples.
Walking/light hiking is required. Some of the grasses are tall! Please wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. Wear sun protection and bring your refillable water bottle!
*please note: there is no public restroom in walking distance of this location so make sure to go beforehand!

White Rock Lake has several unique prairie remnant spots however this tour will focus on the area of Boy Scout Hill.

5.00I took my two daughters who tend to be cautious around groups they don’t know, but my 5 year old was on Canaan’s heels the whole time we moved through the prairie, completely engaged in everything he was sharing, and he welcomed all of her questions with a revered respect for her curiosity. After the tour, all the kids explored the prairie together, which was lovely to witness. As an adult, I loved learning about native people’s relationship to the plants; and since we live in East Dallas, this is a place I pass by every day that now feel more connected to and hold greater appreciation for.

5.00We had such a wonderful time! Canaan made learning about all these prairie plants and flowers so accessible and enjoyable. My son loved it so much and his dad and I did, too. Highly recommend and we’d love to go on another one!

5.00I recently took part in a prairie tour and was elated by how peaceful and enriching the experience turned out to be. The vast open landscapes were stunning, with tall grasses swaying in the wind and wildflowers adding bursts of color. Our guide was knowledgeable and passionate, pointing out native plants, bird species, and even signs of wildlife. One of the highlights was learning about the ecological importance of prairie ecosystems and how they’re being preserved and restored. The tour was well-paced, with plenty of time to take photos and just enjoy the surroundings. I’d highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys nature, photography, or simply wants a relaxing break from city life.
