IMPORTANT: Entrance in the monastery is only allowed with covered shoulders and covered knees. Please have appropriate clothes.
We won't have time for a restaurant meal, just packed lunch or fast food.

Apostolous was a great guide and very knowledgable. It was a long day but he was very accommodating and paced the trip right for our group. I am so glad we got to venture outside of the city with him!

Both tours were great, just one thing about the toilets in the monastery- NO toilet papers. Amazing monastery church though NO electricity @ the time of visit so it was very dark!

I would not recommend that one does this tour of both sites in one day. It is too much to cover as they are in different directions and you are on the road much of the time. We also had a small size vehicle for 5 pax which made it very tiring. At Rila Monastery after a 5 minute or so explanation at the entrance we were given just about 2o minutes to look around. At Plovdiv we were asked to join a public free walking tour, which was ok but not what was expected. The advertisement for this tour says “ you do not have to carry your guidebook along with you” What an exaggeration ! The driver was also texting whilst on the highway which scared 😟 me. In any event I would suggest that if you do choose to go with this company I felt I may have been off in terms of pricing had I booked directly with the company rather than through Viator. In fact eventually you have to liaise with this company anyway te pick up time etc, If you have time only for one trip I would say, depending on your interest of course, just do only Plovdiv, it is well worth visiting.

The trip is tiring but perfect if you don´t have days for touring around Sofia But..... the tour of Plovdiv (Sep 30, 2019) was with a free tour group. That means that we were around 40 persons or more. Like a herd of tourists. Pretty bad. Mainly because we were not adviced that it would be so

From the description "Explore the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery and historic city of Plovdiv with your guide, benefiting from their undivided attention and cultural insights for a more personalized sightseeing experience." There's plenty of driving as Plovdiv and Rila are in different directions from Sofia, so we had about 3 hours in Plovdiv and 1 hour at Rila. The Plovdiv tour was disappointing as we ended up joining a "Free Plovdiv Tour" that started with about 50 people (some peeled off as the tour progressed). Although the guide was friendly and knowledgeable, he seemed to be making this a social event. Chatting up lots of people at the start, and then going around the 50 people to tell him what country each of us was from. It was almost 30 minutes before we left our starting point, and it takes a while to herd 50 people from point to point. Instead of summarizing history he'd as some historic question with length pauses as people guessed at answers (as if most non-Bulgarian tourists were up on Bulgarian history). Another long pause to pose for a group picture for their Facebook page. There's far too much to see in Plovdiv in just 3 hours, but we would have seen more of it in a truly small, personalilzed tour. (I had such a tour a couple days earlier in Skopje, covering more sites in less time, leaving us time to revisit some places or see others that tour had skipped, so I'm comparing the Plovdiv tour to that one.) The Rila part was fine. It's not big, so our stop there provided enough time to take a good look around.
