The therapeutic waters at Polynesian Spa come from two different natural springs: The Priest Spring is named after Father Mahoney, a Catholic Priest who was ‘cured’ of his crippling arthritis from bathing in the waters in 1878. The slightly acidic water from the Priest Spring relieves tired muscles, aches and pains. The Rachel Spring is a source of alkaline water, which features the antiseptic action of sodium silicate nourishing the skin. It was historically said that those who bathe in the waters of the Rachel Spring are blessed with ageless beauty The combination of these two types of mineral waters is only found at Polynesian Spa. The Pavilion Pools Ticket provides access to 8 mineral pools at varying temperatures from both acidic and alkaline mineral springs.

Super relaxing hot pools, beautiful lake view, lovely cafe and gift shop. Shower walls in changing rooms need cleaning and maintenance, door locks and shower heads rusty and old. Outdoor area needs cleaning and maintenance also, cobwebs and flaking paint detract from the "world top 10 spa" status and for the very expensive entry fees not up to standard. Enjoyable nontheless.

Our lake view private pool was excellent. We had a wonderful view across the lake. The pool has its own changing area and a shower for after. Being mineral pools the water is cloudy but water quality appeared excellent. Water is comfortably warm and flows through at a steady rate. There was a short delay getting into our pool (the previous couple overstayed) but staff handled it politely and extended our time accordingly. The pools are well maintained. Towels are supplied with private pool experiences. There is an excellent shop for togs and other supplies.

The view is spectacular across thermal environment and the variety of pools was fabulous. Adults only made the experience very quiet and relaxing. Very clean bathrooms and changing rooms.

Visiting the Pavilion Pools at Polynesian Spa Rotorua (the adults-only section, 12 years +) was one of the most restorative and peaceful experiences of my trip. If you’re seeking quiet, geothermal indulgence without children splashing about, this is the place to aim for. What Works Really Well 1. Tranquil & Focused Atmosphere The Pavilion Pools are clearly designed for a calm experience. Compared to the family or public areas, the ambience is gentler: hushed voices, slow soaking, and more space to pause and breathe. It feels like the spa is letting the geothermal waters do the talking, not the crowd. 2. Range of Mineral Waters One of the standout features is the pairing of acidic (Priest Spring) and alkaline (Rachel Spring) pools. The acidic pools (about 39–41 °C) are soothing for tired muscles and joints, while the alkaline ones (around 38–40 °C) are smooth and gentle on the skin. The mix allows you to cycle between sensations — a warm soak in one, then a more gentle one in the other — which feels thoughtfully balanced. 3. Foot Reflexology Walk & Pool Layout I appreciated the reflexology foot-path that meanders between pools — a subtle touch that nudges you to pause, walk, and reset between soaks. The layout is also pleasing: multiple shallow pools, a deeper “exercise” alkaline pool (1.3 m) for gentle movement, and one lake-view pool for soaking with atmosphere. 4. Beautiful Setting & Views It’s hard to beat the vibe: you’re right on the lakeside, hearing subtle lapping of water, viewing the lake in the distance. The spa does a good job blending nature and structure. The setting gives every soak a little extra. Many reviewers also mention that the pools and views were a highlight of their experience. 5. Good Facilities & Comfort Changing rooms are comfortable, showers are well maintained, and there’s a sense of decent upkeep. Swimsuit and towel hire are available (though you’ll want to check those extra costs ahead of time). Temperature Sensitivities While the variety is good, if you’re particularly heat-sensitive or want lukewarm options, some of the hotter acidic pools may feel intense. It helps to alternate with a cooler soak or the shallower alkaline ones. Extras Cost Add-Ons As with many premier spas, the “extras” can add up: towel hire, secure lockers, swimwear hire (if you didn’t bring your own), and spa treatments beyond bathing. If you plan ahead, you can bring your own towel/swimwear to reduce costs. Crowd Peaks Even with the adult-only label, during busy periods (especially weekends or holidays) you can get mild crowding. It’s less intrusive than in family pools, but don’t expect full isolation. Final Thoughts & Tips If your priority is quiet, mineral-rich bathing geared toward relaxation and wellness, the Pavilion pools deliver beautifully. It’s an experience I would happily revisit. Just go in with realistic expectations of time, pre-book if possible, and bring your own swim gear to manage extra costs. Suggested Tips for Visitors: Arrive early (or late) to avoid peak overlap. Book your time slot in advance, especially in high season. Alternate between acidic and alkaline pools to moderate intensity. Use the reflexology walk and allow walking breaks. Bring your own towel and swimwear if you can, to avoid hire fees. Stay hydrated (you’ll be in warm water for a while)

My family had a free afternoon in Rotorua. Our hotels geothermal pool was under maintenance, and we had the ability to head over to the Polynesian spa and access their pools as a complementary option due to the maintenance. We had an option to upgrade our experience, and opted for the pavilion pools. Towels and lockable lockers were available for rent. There were eight pools that we could access under this package, all of which were amazingly hot, with wonderful views of Sulphur Bay. We met very interesting locals and visitors to chat with during the experience. This was an excellent way to experience, geothermal pools!
