• Great way to start your stay in Puerto Rico

  This was the first day of our trip, and I couldn't have asked for a better day 1 than taking this tour. Our guide, Laura, was absolutely amazing! She is knowledgeable, personsonable, and it was great having her share her knowledge of Puerto Rican history and culture at the spots we stopped at. The food was beyond amazing, Laura knows all the best spots! I'd do this tour again in a heat beat. Will definitely book another tour with Laura on my next visit to Puerto Rico!

  In Feb 2024 I went on a girls' trip to Puerto Rico and this tour was the worst experience of our trip. Our experience with Laura's "Pork Highway Tour" was extremely disappointing. My friend negotiated with Laura to charge our party of 7 a $100 per person to drive us to the Pork Highway Tour. The deal was she would drive us to Lechoneras on a mountain. Since this was our first time visits lechoneras we wanted someone that knew which places to go to. We had the full understanding that we were responsible for purchasing our own food and drinks at each stop. The Pork Highway tour started off badly with Laura arriving 30 minutes late. Since we know she was going to be late we had a light snack to hold us over. I say light snack since this is an eating tour and we did not want to be full. Once Laura arrived she gave us conflicting excuses as to why she was 30 minutes late. She told some of us that traffic was to blame and she told others of us that she had mechanical issues with the van. We were greeted by Laura and her friend. Once we in the bus we began the long bus ride to the mountain. There were many opportunities for Laura and her friend to inform us of various sites along the way. However, they were too busy speaking to each other and it started to feel uncomfortable. So uncomfortable that one of the ladies in our tour, who use to live in Puerto Rico, starting pointing out points of interest. The only communication Laura and her friend had with us was to asking us what music we wanted to hear. We gave up waiting for them to talk to us and just starting have our own conversations. When we got to the base of the mountain we stop at a lechonera to get coffee. While there we noticed two beautiful lechones on the rotisserie and plenty of sides to enjoy. But we were not there to eat (since we were going to be eating at one of the mountain side lechoneras) but to get coffee at the coffee shop next store. Our next stop was a sleepy little square in which Laura stayed in the van while her friend took us to the plaza. Laura's friend had no idea was he was talking about as he was looking up the information regarding the plaza on his phone. Since Laura was sitting in the van and not there she was not aware that he was reading off his phone. Laura drove us up the mountain passing many lechoneras to the next stop, for tapas and drinks. We settled in and had a great time eating tapas. While at the tapas place Laura and her friend ordered their meals which is totally understandable. What is not understandable is that she sat with her back to us. Why is this a problem? Well, she never looked back to see where we were in the meal. We finished, paid for our meals and were ready to go. Yet, Laura was not and we had to wait for her to finish eating so we could continue on our tour. This moment shows that Laura had no awareness of time. While waiting for Laura we went to the front of the tapas place to wait for Laura and her friend to finish eating. While there we notice a group of people listening to live music. For about 10 minutes we stood on the fringe of the group listening to the music, took a picture or two. We were mindful to stay at the entrance waiting for Laura and at no point did we enter the area where the group of people were listening to music. When Laura finally came to get us, nothing was said and we all got into the bus. Our next stop was the promised lechonera stop. I was very excited about the upcoming lechonera. I couldn't wait to have lechon and crispy chicharrón up on the mountain side. To our surprise, without any communication to us, Laura drives back down the mountain. She passes all the mountain side lechonera and brings us back to the bottom of the mountain. We ended up at the lechonera where we originally got coffee. She took us to the same lechonera TWICE!!! Who does that? Laura tells us that all the lechoneras close early on this day and this is where we have to eat. By this time the lechonera's food was mostly gone. Even if we wanted to eat there was barely any food for us to order. If Laura knew the other lechoneras closed early on that day why didn't she communicate that to us so we could plan accordingly? Why did she take us to a random plaza for no reason? Why did she take so long at the tapas place and make us wait for her? Why didn't she let us know that we would not be going up the mountain as promised? Why didn't she tell us we were going back to the original lechonera at the bottom of the mountain? Why didn't she give us a choice? Since there was barely any food left at the lechonera she took us to, we told her that we wanted to go to a lechonera up on the mountain as we had been promised. Laura agreed and the started driving us up the mountain. At that point she was upset and her driving reflected her mood. She was driving aggressively and much quicker than the 35 mph posted. We became nervous of her aggressive driving. Laura found an open lechonera. This one was also almost out of food but had more that the one she previously took us to. Imagine if she would have just taken us to this one from the start. Anyways at this point we didn't want to deal with Laura and her driving. We tried to make the best of it. On the way back Laura barely spoke to us. Her poor friend trying to make things better kept asking us what music we wanted to hear. Laura and her friend dropped us off at a location different from where we were picked up. This was our request. This was the worst "tour" ever. This "tour" was for all purposes hiring a driver who had no concept of traffic times and no concept of lechonera closing times. Laura was hired to drive us to lechoneras on the mountain. If any of our requests would impeded accomplishing that then she should have let us know. But the fact that Laura arrived 30 minutes late, didn't pay attention to time while at the tapas place and just took us to the same place twice (with the place having almost no food the second time) shows that she had no interest in being our tour guide.

  Was looking forward to this trip, but it was cancelled the night before I cannot fault them for mechanical issues, but this seems to have happened to other travelers as well. The trip was cancelled late enough that we couldn't book anything else which was frustrating.

  This tour was absolutely NOT worth what we paid, which was $100 a person, and we were 7! $700 for a few hours of driving around! The price didn’t even include the food! Laura was an hour late picking us up, and barely spoke the whole time. First we were taken to a plaza in Cayey. The main attraction, which was the church, was closed, and her partner’s information was all wrong about the plaza. Then they took us for coffee, which we asked for, and then for drinks, which we also asked for. She drank and ate like she was on a tour too. When it came time for the real tour of the Pork Highway, she said only one place was open because it was so late and took us back to where we had the coffee! Basically, they only had scraps left (the bottom of whatever food they had made for the day). We insisted she try another place to see if it was open. She was so angry and drove so fast and dangerously I thought we wouldn’t make it. We had to tell her where to go after we Googled the Lechoneras. Lo and behold, we found some that were open. Not a lot of food left, but we ate. The whole purpose of the tour was to visit Lechoneras. Why would you take us to get coffee and drinks first knowing the places we wanted to go to would be closed by the time we got there? No communication with us whatsoever. In the end, there were no apologies, no offer to make it right by giving us our money back or charging less. Nothing! Take a taxi. Much cheaper and about all you get with this tour company is a ride anyway! I do NOT recommend this tour at all!

  Was curious about the Pork Highway but without renting a car, I didn't think it was an option. Then I decided to search some of the tour websites & came across Sofrito Tours. The name got my attention & wanting to support a local company helped me make my decision. I reached out to Laura with questions and she immediately responded which made me feel comfortable enough to book it. She even was able to accommodate some family that wanted to join us at the last minute. It was a fun & interesting experience to head up the mountains and see another side of the island outside of San Juan. Both our stops to eat were delicious. The atmosphere was colorful, full of restaurants & souvenir shops. With music blaring, authentic food and great company, it definitely was a "vibe" to remember!

  My husband and I took Laura Ortiz's Pork Highway Tour and Old San Juan, Loiza, Santurce and Pinones Tour. We especially liked that Laura is the owner of the woman-owned Puerto Rican tour company, Sofrito Tours. The owner of the Old San Juan B&B where we stayed (Casa Sol) highly recommended Laura's tours. Laura is a PhD candidate in Puerto Rican studies and she added so much history and cultural background to the tours. Based on Laura's recommendation we bought a historical analysis of Puerto Rico's history. We felt like we learned so much about Puerto Rico while enjoying a fun day out with an excellent tour guide. We highly recommend Sofrito Tours to people who want to learn about Puerto Rico's culture, history, and gastronomy.

  If I could give a “0” I would! This was not a tour! Just a driver to and from locations. Laura was 45 minutes late to pick us up. Then she never spoke or said a word to us for most of the 3 hour tour! Her assistant tried to be pleasant with us, but he really was not a tour guide at all, with little to no information! Then she lied to us and said the places on pork highway were closed so she took us an another pork place next to a busy road! We told her google was showing the pork highway places were still open, so she begrudgingly took us up the mountain to a place. She drove fast and was variably upset. This was the purpose of our “tour” The cost was $100/person and we were 7 ladies on a girls trip! She made a killing on us! Our other tours during this trip have been awesome so this was such a disappointment! Anyhow, I do NOT recommend this company at all!

  First, there were organizational issues. The description said the tour was 5 -6 hours, beginning at 10 am, but the confirmation came in at 9-5, so I was prepared for that to change, by an hour. There was no indication of where we were to meet; only a "hotel". So I called the number on the confirmation for Sofrito tours the day before and it said that number was no longer in service! So I hunted down another number and was told I would be picked up at my hotel at 12:30 pm! I pointed out the problem with the phone number, but the tour guide brushed it aside, blaming it on the vendor. When I noted that the 12:30 start time was quite a bit later than promised, she brushed that aside too. And then she didn't arrive until 1:pm. We were dropped off promptly at 5:00, so an hour or two shorter than advertised. We stopped four times; once at an artist who carved three kings; once at the museum of the artist Frade, once in downtown Cayey and once at a restaurant serving pork. At the artist's stop and the stop in downtown Cayey, the guide spent a great deal of time in personal conversation with acquaintances of hers, ignoring us standing right next to her. She was very proud of the three types of music key to Puerto Rico, but spent no time explaining the key aspects of each. We drove a long way, so she could have put together a sampling of each kind of music and explain their origins during the car ride, but she did not. Very disappointing.

  This tour was one of the highlights of my recent trip to PR. Laura is a fantastic guide - she's knowledgable and passionate, and brought us to all kinds of off-the-beaten-path experiences that we never would have thought to visit without her. The pork was as delicious as we thought it would be, but it turns out the real treat was getting to see a bit of the island outside of San Juan and learn from Laura's deep historical knowledge. I cannot recommend this trip highly enough!

  Sofrito Tours not only has a great name and awesome slogan, but is also a great company to get to learn more about all- Puerto Rico. Laura is a history buff with a Phd, so you know she is not messing around. Her passion and knowledge shows very quicly, so any of the trips you select - you'll love it. My favorite thing was seeing other guests learning, connecting with Laura as a Guide, but also with the experiences and locations we visited.
