Pozzo Della Cava - Complesso Archeologico
A fascinating underground journey in the medieval district of Orvieto, through caves full of Etruscan, Medieval and Renaissance archaeological artefacts, unearthed thanks to the hard work of the family who owns it. The well is a huge hole in the tuff excavated by Pope Clement VII between 1527 and 1530 expanding an Etruscan well; closed to the public in 1646 and rediscovered after centuries of neglect. In the nine caves around the well you can see alsto a medieval pottery workshop with numerous majolica artefacts and ceramicists’ tools, some small medieval pits used to dispose of rubbish, an Etruscan cistern, a Medieval winecellar and the remains of some ancient Etruscan burial tombs.

Interesting guided tour with knowledgeable tour guide Anastasia. The caves and their history are magnificent and the remnants of what once was are amazing. We didn’t enter the second cave since there were 50 steep steps to decline and then go up.

A unique and interesting thing to see, and makes you wonder how they could do this with hand tools. It is very well preserved and offers good picture taking opportunities.

There was not much to the self guided tour. We thought we were going under the city to see how the aquifers worked, when it is just a small museum area.

It's a fair walk from the Piazza del popolo. It was interesting though I wouldn't go out of my way to visit it. The artefacts on display were somewhat repetive, as this site used to be kiln( about 2500 yrs ago).

Most interesting place. It’s certainly worth the visit also with kids interested in history. Even if not famous like St Patrick well, I think it’s more interesting

Really enjoyed this step back in time to explore the caves and learn about their uses and the history unearthed in them. Beautiful range of ceramics available in their shop.

Very nice, clear route and brochures representing well arranged explanations. The only thing I have to object to was that the operator did not tell us about the ticket reduction having already visited St. Patrick's well and we paid the full price. When we pointed it out, he could at least give us back the difference.

As a European who has already seen some antiquity and caves, this is not worth it. 5 minutes, 10 if you read the signs in all 5 languages, and you've seen it. Deep well is nice to see. The image with stairs and layers looks impressive, but in reality it is short.

Very interesting visit to a place that has been used for centuries, for many uses whose trace is particularly well explained in the context of a very educational path, with explanatory signs including in French. Furthermore, possibility to eat in a nice setting.
