Destroying almost 6 square kilometers (4 miles) of buildings in the heart of the city , taking down the statues of the Romanian Kings and removing their stone-carved portraits from the Arch of Triomphe, these are just a few of the decisions that reshaped Bucharest and transformed it during the Communist Era, called the Golden Era by the fanatics.
The communist regime left a powerful mark on the whole Eastern Bloc, even though one of Europe’s last dictators, Nicolae Ceausescu was taken down from power more than 30 years ago. The traces of communism are still clearly visible throughout the city.
Catch a glimpse of how the Communist era shaped Romania in a historic tour of Bucharest. Visit metro stations and apartment buildings from that period and get a better understanding of how people lived their daily lives under the Ceausescu regime. Your tour includes a visit to the Palace of the Parliament and to the Ceausescu Residential Palace.

In the morning, your tour guide will pick you up from your hotel (or from the requested location) in Bucharest. In the first part of the day, we will visit some of the metro stations built during the Communist regime, which will help us discover the architectural style of that period, as well as better understand the plans that Nicolae Ceausescu had for Bucharest. Before visiting the Palace of the Parliament, we will journey into a local neighborhood built especially for the working class. Here, you will get to see how regular people lived their lives under the regime. The Palace of the Parliament is one of the largest buildings in the world, and it is often regarded as the crown jewel of Ceausescu's dictatorship. Also known as the House of the People, the magnificent building was erected as part of a larger project called "Project Bucharest". After his visit to North Korea in 1971, Nicolae Ceausescu was inspired by the capital city of Pyongyang and decided to give Bucharest a look worthy of a dictator. Our last landmark is none other than the Ceausescu Residential Palace, known as the Palace of Spring (Palatul Primăverii). This is the place where the Ceausescu couple lived most of their life. The Palace was built between 1964 and 1965 in a Neo-Classical/Neo-Late Rennaissance style, and it is equipped with luxurious furniture. After Ceausescu's rule ended, the palace was used as a VIP residence for official delegations and foreign presidents, but it was turned into a museum in 2016.

This was a great way to see some of the big tourist sites in Bucharest without worrying about transportation. Our guide Mihae did a great job of telling us about the rise and fall of communism in Romania. He got us to our tours of Ceausescu Residence and the Parliament Building on time and was waiting for us at the end of each tour. Afterwards, he took us on a walking tour of the historic center and we were able to pop into several of the monasteries to have a look around. We really enjoyed our day with Mihae- he's knowledgeable and just a really nice guy.

The Ceacescu home. Talk about self indulgence! This tour helped put a real face on an incredible story, being the 1989 fall of Communism in Romania. Our tour guide, Marcel, gave very detailed explanations and the tour was well planned.

If you want to get out of your hotel room in Bucharest and are also interested in history/politics - this is a GREAT tour. Romania has a fascinating history. Our guide, Marcel, was an absolutely a wonderful guide to us for the day! He was so polite and full of history/commentary about Romania itself! Was able to see different areas of the city I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. We also were able to see/ride the subway with a local who knew the ropes. I normally don’t ventured into underground Metros that I am not familiar with, but he made us feel safe so all in all it was neat to be able to say I had the experience here in Bucharest. I was a bit under the weather by nightfall and he was kind enough to bring me to the local market as well as the pharmacy. Translating for us for various things helped tremendously! We really enjoyed the restaurant he brought us too. Great food with a pleasant ambiance/pretty view!

My Husband and I had a wonderful day and extremely interesting private tour with Mikaela. She was very knowledgeable about the Communist era and of Romanian History and Culture in general. Having excellent English we learnt so much from this excellent guide, leaving us inspired to read and learn even more about Romania. Mikaela was also very friendly and kind about my walking issues. She spotted places for me to sit down regularly. A huge thankyou from us both, we would highly recommend this tour and Rolandia as a company.

Strongly recommended if you want to know more about the history of communism in Romania. What makes the tour particularly fascinating was the passion of my guide Cristi that explained the particularities of communism in Romania and the realities from nowadays.
