I visited Lithuania in early April, staying for 8 days in Vilnius. Vilnius is an incredible city, but I wanted to see some of the surrounding area. I took a day trip to Poland and the Augustow Canal. My guide was Marty (Martynas), one of the best trip guides I have ever had. He spoke English very well, was knowledgeable, kind, patient and had incredible stories and anecdotes. He quickly understood what I was interested in and tailored my trip to my particular interests while staying in the basic outline of the tour. We stopped in a small town on the way and were lucky enough to tour a synagogue and yeshiva. The history of this particular site was heartbreaking and enlightening, and Marty was well versed in all the details. The canal was intriguing, we met some locals who I will never forget. On the way back we stopped at an enchanting chapel deep in the woods. The chapel, in particular, honored a visit made by pope John Paul II in 1999. Interesting history. We stopped for a great lunch while in Poland. I recommend this tour wholeheartedly, especially request Marty as your guide. He is smart, knows all the history, but has an engaging personality with a great sense of humor, a must in my book. I love Lithuania and hope to return in the future.
