Juma Mosque
On the way from Baku to Sheki we visit Juma Mosque in Shamakhi (or Friday Mosque) is one of the tourist attractions often visited by travellers. It is included into our Shamakhi and Gabala tour. Unlike many mosques, entrance to Juma Mosque of Shamakhi is permitted even to non-Muslims. To enter, you need to remove your shoes, but walking barefoot is not a problem, because the floor is covered with thick carpets. In addition, women must cover their heads in order to enter the mosque, so they provide free head cover at the entrance, which is required to be returned at the exit.
Palace of Shaki Khans
The Palace itself built in 1762 as a summer residence for the Khan of Sheki. During the construction of the building, no single nails and glues were used. From inside, all the walls of the Palace are full of paintings which each painting has its own philosophical meaning. In the garden outside of the palace, you will discover 2 plane trees that both are 500 years old.

A tour guide to destroy your day! The tour guide happened to not only show any interest in our tour but also to be racist expressing his personal political views with so much hate – something completely unprofessional, inappropriate, and unacceptable for a guide! On top of everything, had we not pointed it out, he would have missed our first scheduled stop at the mosque – even though it was explicitly included in the booking – and no historical background or explanation was given, despite us asking for that at the beginning of the tour. It was more important to the guide to constantly talk to the driver all the way to Sheki and back, showing no regard for us, despite this being a private tour. That’s not the behaviour I would expect from a tour guide on a private tour and would never recommend him to anyone else. He ruined our visit to beautiful Sheki.

We had a great day trip with Tahir to Sheki with stops at historic mosques along the way. Tahir had an excellent level of English and both him and the driver (apologies, I forget his name) were so friendly and made us feel comfortable and welcome. It is a long day trip, but the easiest way to see Sheki if you are on a short trip. It was great to see some more of the country besides Baku and its surroundings and we couldn’t have asked for better guides.

This product or itinerary doesn’t make any sense to start with so can’t really blame the guide/driver for a terrible overall experience. Sheki is a lovely town with interesting history and beautiful historical constructions. Unfortunately the drive from and back to Baku with current road conditions on the same day is a nightmare. It takes more than 4.5 hours one-way so we had a 13-hour day with majority of the time on the road. Other unpleasant minor details including: car with no seat belts in the back seat, reckless driving (almost collided with another car), expensive suggested restaurant for lunch, frequent restroom stops but really smoke breaks for the guide (we took a bathroom break and then went to get gas soon after, why can’t we combine the two? Cuz you can’t smoke), etc. Highly recommend to spend a night in and spend more time in Sheki. Many historical buildings have their own guides and they were all great! Only book this tour if you have a super tight schedule and Sheki is on your bucket list.

Great day tour from Baku. It is a long day but worth it. Each element of the trip is well worth going to see and the guide gave us a lot of information about Sheki and Azerbaijan in general. Would definitely recommend.
