Cairo Citadel
The Citadel of Cairo or Citadel of Saladin is a medieval Islamic-era fortification in Cairo, Egypt, built by Salah ad-Din (Saladin) and further developed by subsequent Egyptian rulers. It was the seat of government in Egypt and the residence of its rulers for nearly 700 years from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Its location on a promontory of the Mokattam hills near the center of Cairo commands a strategic position overlooking the city and dominating its skyline. At the time of its construction, it was among the most impressive and ambitious military fortification projects of its time. It is now a preserved historic site, including mosques and museums.
Mosque of Muhammad Ali
Mohamed Ali pasha mosque at citadel of Saladin,Cairo,Egypt. Also known as Alabaster mosque, because of the outer casing of the walls up to 13 meters high. this mosque has been built by Mohamed Ali pasha the Turkish ruler in Egypt ( 1805- 1848 ). he built this mosque on honor of his son Tusson pasha, who died in early age. he start building the mosque 1825 and finish 1848. The designer was Turkish architect Yousf Bushnaq, who designed the mosque in the same shape of the blue mosque in Istanbul Turkey. The mosque divided for 2 parts, The atrium & the mosque. with its great dome ( 52 m. high ) and two great minarets ( 84 m. high ).

5.00Cairo is a city rich with history. But, too often viaitors jump from major attraction to major attraction without getting the context. Simone is a great guide, who provides that critical context, so you understand not just “what” you are looking at, but the historical “why” context. With 8 centuries of history, the Citadel has served numerous roles, and is also an incredible showcase of Islamic architecture. Upon Simone’s suggestion, we added a visit to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization a unique museum housing the sarcophagi of 20 Egyptian pharaohs. I recommend this tour and, in particular, Simone as a guide.

5.00Traveled as a solo female traveler, and requested for female guide if possible. They managed to arrange it with Hager. 😀 The tour with her was easy going, and she filled me in with stories of the past, history of the churches etc. I had an enjoyable day with her, and really appreciated her knowledge on the churches!

5.00A great day! Initially our tour was to only visit the Mosque of Muhammed Ali. We paid a bit extra as we still had the rest of the day and wanted to see the other mosques in the area. We also visited the Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa’i Mosque. A huge thankyou to our tour guide, Hoda, who made this day extra special. Her knowledge, kindness and patience made our day even better. She was great company, and made us feel very welcome. I highly recommend this tour if you’re ever in Cairo and want to visit the mosques in the citadel and explore the histories of them.

5.00Hoda was a wonderful guide. She explained things clearly with just the right amount of detail. She was also sensitive to all our needs in terms of pace , heat and water. The balance of tour and free time was just right and she was flexible. The Citadel with it's beautiful mosque was breathtaking with wonderful views over the city. Hoda was happy to take as many photos of us as we wanted, and waited patiently while we took our own photos. We asked to do a shorter tour of the Citadel so that we could also visit the Qualawun complex, with its beautiful mausoleum, in El Moez St. I would definitely use Hoda as a guide again.

5.00The tour was great. They picked us up from the hotel and the tour took about 3 hours. The guide, Hoda, was very helpful and courteous. She explained everything and answered our questions. She spoke English well and clearly. She also gave us suggestions on other places to visit and resturants for authentic food. She was just great! The driver, Muhammad, was also great. I would definitely recommend this for others.
