Well worth the one hr walk to the main swimming pools. The boat trip is really just away of extracting 1 OMR from you- you can actually swim the 100m or so . To avoid paying although you may get some strange looks so I paid. You disembark and the first few hundred metres is through some lovely date palms where the path then opens up as you walk down the steep gorge. At this point the walking is quite difficult as you are walking on rounded pebbles of around 100mm diameter- if you are walking wearing beach shoes then this is uncomfortable- I would recommend walking shoes or boots. The walk doesn’t get any easier on your feet but is mostly flat with occasional scrambling over boulders. Towards the end, some of these are very polished and wet - you need to be careful as there are some steep drops. I saw a middle aged woman slip and badly bruise her elbow. The route all the way is pretty obvious. You pass a large pool which looks inviting for swimming ( some people were) and then continue for another half mile or so before arriving at the main pools. There were a couple of one person change tents where a lady was collecting some money- otherwise you just get changed where you can. At this point I would definitely advise wearing beach shoes as you then make your way to the swimming area . The river is followed for a few hundred metres swimming, walking, paddling etc. The final pool area ( cave) is reached via a 30 m swimming pools in deep water with few if no hand holds on the vertical walls. You need to be a confident swimmer. There is a narrow gap around as wide as your head which you must carefully negotiate- I found it easier just diving under the water where it is wider- I had swimming goggles. You get through to a pool approximately 15 x25 m long - all in deep water with a steep ramp at the end where there is. Lovely waterfall of around 20 metres. Adjacent to this is a thick hawser rope which you can use to pull yourself up to a small ledge. From there you can dive back down. I chose not to do this as I’m 66 and thought it best to preserve any strength for the swimming. As I was exiting- a woman was having a panic attack as she was about to leave the chamber- all this happening I should add as you are treading water- you cannot stand up as the water is too deep and there are no hand holds to cling onto. You have been warned - there have been some deaths in this pool. I personally wouldn’t bother using a guide- they may well give you some historical, geological information but other than that everything is pretty obvious as to what you have to do. The guides don’t actually do any swimming- they just sit in the shade allowing their clients to get on with it themselves they certainly don’t act as life guides. The car park usually fills up quickly and the little cafe sells some snacks and drinks. There are also a few shacks selling/ hiring life jackets and beach shoes- if you can’t swim I would definitely advise making use of their services. I hope my tips have been useful.

The guides I witnessed simply show you when to walk- it’s obvious where to walk as there are no alternatives- you just walk up the gorge on well marked paths. When you get to the bathing areas they tell their clients that they won’t be swimming and ask their clients to get on with it ( this is the area where perhaps they would be of most use) They just sit in the shade. The swimming is only recommended if you are a confident swimmer as you have to commit yourself in several places with nothing to stand on or hold onto at the sides. The final cave access is possible with your head above water but you have to manoeuvre your head around the narrow gap - higher water and this wouldn’t be possible. I took swimming goggles and just ducked under the water e Level. As I was leaving the cave area a woman had a panic attack and another middle aged woman slipped on the wet rock and badly bruised her elbow. I would recommend walking boots/ trail shoes up to the final swimming area where you can then change into beach shoes. I walked the distance in beach shoes and it was very hard work given the large pebbles you have to walk over. The final cave are has a rope you can pull yourself up on to reach a ledge at 4 m where you can dive/ jump off into the deep water.I didn’t bother as the panic attack woman kind of put me off a bit. Costs 1 OMR for boat but tbh you can also swim if you want as it’s only around 75 m to the far bank. There is a coffee shop / cafe offering simple snacks and also shops offering rental of beach shoes ( 1 OMR) and life jackets . Car park gets a bit crowded but you can always park up the hill and walk. Couldn’t find the nearby Geocache.

The wadi and 'spectacular with sheer walls and lush vegetation, beautiful both the first part where you walk up the stream and the second part where you swim between rocks and bodies of water to the cave

Beautiful experience with private tour. The guide accompanied us from the parking lot to the water holes. At the deepest point they measure 9 MT, and not being salt water it is worth considering whether or not to rent the life jacket. Women are only allowed in the water with T-shirts and shorts, although I saw someone in a T-shirt and costume... (Without shorts). I do not recommend it to those with mobility difficulties, because to get there you have to face a slightly uphill path on a rocky conformation.

Must do We arrived at the Wadi car park at 8:15 am and I think it’s a perfect time to start the experience, we did the hike almost alone, on the return however we met a lot of people who were heading towards the wadi Hiking to access the Wadi is widely accessible, we have read many reviews saying it was dangerous/ vertiginous. We are both dizzy and there was only one time when we were not comfortable, but it was largely doable! Small negative but not insurmountable point, once you get into all the rocks that you have to cross, there is no longer really a path and there are arrows to indicate the right road, but these arrows lead a bit anywhere. Although they will always lead you to a safe place, some paths are much simpler than others. On the way we came across a group with a guide who told us to follow them to go through the easy path, but on the way back we came across a path a little more difficult to pass (without it being dangerous at any time). Providing good shoes, we were in classic basketball and it was very good, we met a lot of people in tap and that is surely where it becomes dangerous. The rock can be slippery at times, and a lot of rocks on the way so good shoes are needed. The reward of Wadi is well worth it. As almost 100% of the people we went to the cave, the passage to access it is narrow but the sighting of the end of the cave removes any anxiety to pass there. Once in the cave, there is a waterfall that can be climbed to access a natural swimming pool up high. The climb is easy to rope, the rock does not slip at all. The descent is done by jumping from the waterfall, no danger as long as you look where you step. I had personally rented a lifejacket (1OMR in the parking lot) and my spouse had not taken one. We didn’t regret having one, swimming is very easy and there are places where you can catch your breath but overall I especially enjoyed being able to enjoy the landscape without having to worry about swimming and just let myself be carried. Provide water for hiking because despite beautiful areas in the shade, part of the path is in full sun, and even at 8:30 in October it was very hot! Also provide a waterproof bag for personal effects that you do not want to leave on the side at the beginning of the wadi. For all the things that it is not possible to take in the wadi, it is possible to leave them on the edge at the beginning of the wadi, it is very safe no one steals anything and it is very pleasant!

The first wadi is reached fairly close by the canoe walk, a 10-15 minute walk. Then it’s a gruelling 45-minute or so hike including rock scrambles to reach the next wadi in a canyon. SO worth it despite the excruciating heat midday and lack of shade. The water is clear, warm and clean. I’m only dinking a star bc there is rubbish by the site (but not in the water) and overflowing rubbish bin en route. Really shameful of the government or whoever runs the site to not clean this up!

The Wadi Shab is definitively a must see, and this trip was absolutely worth. As useful information to other guests we would like to pinpoint a couple of aspects of the trek, as we feel it may not be sufficiently clearly explained to the public. 1) The path itself is an easy & relatively flat mountain trail, with some narrow passages, where care must be exercised and for someone vertigo could kick in. Good shoes are recommended. It’s about 1h walk and heat should not be underestimated. In our situation, on Sept 8th morning, the temperature was already around 38C and stones were hot. 2) Water is warm and calm but pools are deep (you cannot touch the bottom) and therefore require adequate stamina & swimming skills to be able to always float and cross them. Life vests, if necessary, can be hired at the start of the trek. 3) Many rocks are *very* slippery, even with water shoes. 4) The entrance to the (gorgeous) cave is a notorious narrow passage (see youtube videos) and must be done by either swimming below water or skillfully shift the head between the rocks above water level, while keeping afloat & swimming forward, therefore challenging for a claustrophobic or aquaphobic person. But the reward is unforgettable!
