Queenstown to Christchurch via Mt Cook, this one way, small group, fully-guided day tour combines two of the most stunning locations in the South Island with the time and options to enjoy the activities, unlike other tours. Led by our famously passionate tour guides, notorious for bringing your journey to life by sharing their stories and rich background knowledge and run in modern, comfortable minibuses packed with extras ensuring your comfort and safety.

Please note: the Hooker Valley Track is currently CLOSED while the Department of Conservation works on replacing one of the swing bridges. This is expected to be complete in Autumn 2026 so the track will be inaccessible to the public until then.

Itinerary:
1. Queenstown - Your tour starts in the stunning city of Queenstown. As we drive out of the city your guide will not only set the scene for your adventure today but also point out and guide you past some of the area’s top highlights.
2. Kawarau Suspension Bridge – Departing Queenstown we then make our way north through the stunning Kawarau Gorge passing beautiful views. The Kawarau Suspension Bridge and the famous Roaring Meg Lookout. Time and light permitting we will stop for that first great shot of the tour.
3. Cromwell – Exiting the Kawarau Gorge we enter the fruit and wine growing region of Cromwell. Passing huge fields of vines we cross Lake Dunstan and follow this striking lake towards Lindis Pass.
4. Lindis Pass (10 mins) – Climbing in altitude, Lindis Pass has amazing views down through the valley. Being one of only three alpine roads through the otherwise impassable Southern Alps, we stop at the Lindis Pass lookout 971m above sea level for an essential photo.
5. Omarama (30 mins) – While driving through the endless plains of the Mackenzie district we will spot several of the celebrated Merino breed of sheep before stopping at the quaint township of Omarama. While in Omarama we have time for a break or even to try the best creamy chicken pie in NZ (in our opinion)!
6. Lake Pukaki (10 mins) – Turning west we begin to enter the Aoraki National Park and Lake Pukaki begins to emerge in front of us. Lake Pukaki is one of the bluest lakes you will ever see and stunningly framed by the backdrop of Aoraki/Mt Cook and the Southern Alps. We stop for some amazing photos and to just marvel the sight that we are beholding. It’s not hard to see why so many Lord of the Rings scenes were filmed nearby and we will point them out for you.
7. Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park (2.5 - 3hrs) – Arriving at Mt Cook Village, weather depending, we should get some amazing shots of the mountain itself. At 3724m, Aoraki/Mt Cook is New Zealand’s highest peak, however, the mountain can be viewed without any acclimatisation whatsoever from the village which is just 750m above sea level.While in the national park you have approximately 2.5 - 3 hours free time to enjoy free walks/hikes or one of the extra optional activities. Some of our recommendations include: Tasman Glacier View walk, Scenic flights – see the region from the air and land on the Tasmin Glacier. Whatever you have decided to do, we will pick you up and drop you off where you need to go and make sure you are well looked after. Before departing, our guide will hand you over to our Christchurch partners Cheeky Kea, who will be guiding your tour from Mt Cook to Christchurch.
8. Tekapo (10 minutes) - Farewelling Mt Cook we make our way to Lake Tekapo. This turquoise blue lake is famous world over for its pristine beauty. We have a short time here but long enough to get those Instagram breaking photos explore the Church of the Good Shepard and see the Mackenzie dog before starting to head towards Christchurch.
9. Christchurch – upon arriving in Christchurch your guides will point out any highlights we pass while travelling to the drop off locations to complete the tour.

2.00While the drivers solid and informative (with one caveat), I think travelers should understand what they’re signing up for before getting up at 6am for a thirteen hour day on a bus. First, your time at Mt. Cook largely depends on your driver and group staying on schedule. Our driver made a few unscheduled stops, including at the request of individual group members for coffee. That, along with the delays to the bus by the driver and group members, meant that we only had two hours at Mt. Cook rather than the scheduled three hours. Practically, that left time for a quick, truncated hike and then, rather than a second hike, an unnecessarily lengthy stop at the hotel cafe. The stop at the cafe was especially unnecessary given the 50 minute (supposed to be 30 minute) stop for breakfast. Of course, the driver was just trying to be nice to cater to the group, but the effect was severely cutting into the time for the main attraction of the tour. Second, while the bus is comfortable enough, it is a cramped place to be trapped with someone’s screaming toddler for eleven hours. To travelers, I recommend bringing soundproof headphones or looking into the private group option (including with this company). For the tour company, for the enjoyment of the majority of your customers, I recommend that you steer families with small children to your private tour option.

5.00The trip was long, but truly amazing as whole. I was impressed by Olly’s knowledge about New Zealand while he has been here for a few months and also his broad general knowledge. His information did add value to the trip and made it more enjoyable. Best of luck on your next adventures in scuba diving and cycling! I am sure they will be just exciting and rewarding. Happy to show you around my country when you are in Australia one day, Olly. Rose is another lovely knowledgeable tour guide in our second leg of the trip. She made sure we arrived at Christchurch safely and comfortably. Hope you enjoy your break with the fam, Rose!

4.00This is a very convenient option for people who don’t want to drive around. The hosts are very knowledgeable and kind. The whole experience was comfortable. However, the stop at lake tekapo is brief. The tour can be organised to provide more time and experience there

5.00Long ride but great trip. Hiking at Aoraki was beautiful. Ollie took us from Queenstown to Aoraki and was informative and fun. Renee took us from Aoraki to Christchurch and made a lond ride back interesting with her farm facts.

5.00The van picked us up with our luggage at our hotel in Queenstown. We drove through the beautiful countryside with opportunities to get out of the van for photo opportunities. Our guide stopped at clean restrooms along the way. The hike up to view Mt. Cook and the glacier was a welcome exercise. Our guide changed after Mt. Cook, and another guide drove us into Christchurch. Both women provided excellent information about the local lifestyles and countryside we travelled through

5.00We were picked up on time by Ollie. A funny guy who got us to Mt Cook on time. There, we changed driver to Renee. She was great too. Some people have said that the 2nd leg was rushed. It was in a way, but this is down to the drivers reaching their max hours. The only aspect that could be trimmed is the glacier lookout. Perhaps give more time for the easy trails at Mt Cook. Overall, it is more expensive than the public bus. But you are collected and dropped off where you need to be.

5.00From speaking with Cheeky Kiwi reception, Matilda, for a suitable date (Booking.com wasn't working) I had complete confidence we would be looked after. Flying home from Christchurch & being in Queenstown we were excited to be seeing Mt Cook, Lake Tekapo & the country in between. Our 2 drivers were exceptional with their commentary, answering questions, advising of comfort & food stops & looking after passengers. I've since heard more from others who've travelled with Cheeky Kiwi & must complement you on the great reputation you are building.
