A Walk Between an Empire and a Kingdom!
Get to know one of the Transylvanian villages at a leisurely pace. Get close to the real character of the mountain villages as you enjoy a relaxing rambling day trip with beautiful scenery and a network of trails that could be rewarding to explore on foot.
Located at a-one hour drive from Brasov, it's a great place for all kinds of outdoor activities – among them walking, the activity you experience with our licensed guides.
The rolling hills afford wide views over the entire region with stunning landscapes of the mountains: Bucegi Natural Park, Piatra Craiului National Park, Postavaru Massif.
Whilst many of the villages in the area are heavily visited, it is possible to walk here and experience real authentic village life.
The walking grade is easy to moderate, in a round trip for walkers looking to explore a corner of Transylvania way off the tourist trail.
After our 10-12 km hike a well deserved lunch awaits for us at a local guesthouse.

Ciocanu
At the foothills of Piatra Craiului mountains, on the former border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Romanian Kingdom, lies a mysterious and remote village called Ciocanu. A village which once blossomed thanks to the trade and economic benefits of a border settlement, became almost untouched as if time stopped passing since the unification happened following the first War War. First established by three deserter Austro-Hungarian soldiers, and named the village Ciocanu, meaning Hammer, as the outline of the village is shaped like a hammer now is populated mainly by elderly living of their cattle and sheep farms.

We went on two wonderful villages hikes: Magura-Bran-Magura and Magura, Pestera, Sirnea, Ciocanu and they felt like going back in time. The landscape is beautiful, peaceful and relaxing and the hikes are easy. Our guide, Marian knows the history of the area, the people and has plenty of stories to tell. Marian is professional, friendly and we love to hike with him. Warmly recommend!

My goal was to hike and get a feel for the local culture, I think this trip succeeded in this. The hike was very doable and the trip ended with a lunch at a local place with some regional specialities. Bought some sheep cheese to take back home! Would recommend this trip!

We started from Holbav, a little village close to Brașov, with a hike through a huge snow, partly through the forest. Above, an amazing view over a part of Poiana Mărului commune, houses scattered on the countless hills, like in a fairy tale! Marian and Charlie, true professionals, passionate about mountains and human interaction, made our day a really special one! I wholeheartedly recommend for an unforgettable experience, in one of the countless wonders of Transylvania!

The great experience started there in Brazil, when Marian, the owner of Active Travel was tireless in helping me with all the details of our private day tour to Peles Castle, Bran Castle and Fortaleza de Rasnov Pontual, Carl, our dear guide, picked us up at our Hotel in Brasov for an unforgettable day, with a lot of culture, stories, typical food and sympathy! Our day tour started at Castelo das Peles, where we arrived early, exactly at the time when the place has fewer tourists. We walked through the beautiful garden, took a lot of pictures and entered without facing any queues. Carl told us details of the castle, information we would not have if we hadn't hired the day tour. We had access to all floors of this castle, which is one of the most beautiful and preserved in Europe (and we know many castles!). On the exit, Carl took us to the Café del Castelo and asked to offer us the doc and typical of this region of Romania. Continuing the tour, Carl drove (very well!) Until Bran and once again we were surprised by the great Service of his tour, with seamless access, many stories of this unforgettable Castle and at the end, led us to a typical fair to try wonderful food from this region of Romania. We still got to know the Fortress of Rasnov, the access is made by a trenzinho and there we learned more stories and saw an unforgettable sunset! Carl even took us to a stop to see the eternal snow, because we vibe that we love snow! During the whole tour Carl was contextualizing the locations and their stories. At the end of the day, I led us to our hotel in Sighisoara It was an amazing day, with many stories, amazing views, places that are recorded in our memory and in our hearts! Super we indicate the services of ACTIVE TRAVEL and Carl!

My son and I were fortunate enough to book Active Travel for a private tour. Best decision ever because we truly did get to see the best of the Transylvania region, castles, palaces, fortresses, etc. They fulfilled all of their promises and provided lovely hotel accommodations in the center of Brasov. We can’t praise our tour guide, Tudor, enough. His knowledge, love of history, pride and enthusiasm for our cultural discovery made this trip unforgettable. We had so much fun with him and laughed so much that it felt like he was another family member. We really appreciated that each time we arrived at a very busy place, Tudor was able to do his magic and get us right in with no wait. It is very apparent that he loves what he does and does not consider it a job, very special in a young person. Just when we thought our tour could not get any better, Tudor invited us to his family house. Here we were given the tour of his farm and his family fed us with their own livestock and homemade brandy. They were so gracious and hospitable to us and we could see that this fine young man came from such a beautiful loving family. We came away from this trip loving the people of Romania and already discussing our wish to return. Thanks Tudor for making this vacation so wonderful!

For those looking for an AMAZING adventure, using a travel company, book through Active Travel. From the start, working with Marian, the owner of Active Travel was easy. I told him what I was interested in seeing in Romania, as well as asking him for suggestions and Marian came up with a phenomenal itinerary!! It was nice to be picked up and dropped off at the airport. My guide was Mihai.. He was EXCEPTIONAL!! He showed me many beautiful castles and churches, as well as taking me on some breathtaking hikes. Mihai was very knowledgeable and organized. He was also very kind and friendly. One would be very fortunate to have him as a guide. I also enjoyed viewing the brown bears in their natural element. I would definitely suggest going to see the bears.
