Salzburg Marionette Theater
In this unique baroque audience hall with 350 seats there have been operas, musicals, plays and fairytales that have occurred here such as: The Magic Flute - Probably Mozart's best known opera, staged here for young and old in a short version. In German, subtitled in various languages. Duration: 1-hour. The Salzburg Marionette Theatre employs 12 puppeteers, trained in a wide variety of trades and professions. Qualities common to all of them are musicality, manual skill, and the ability to emphathise with the various characters in order to bring alive the marionettes on the stage. The Salzburg Marionette Theatre has evolved its own technique, which is used as a model by many marionette theatres worldwide. The puppeteers’ training, which takes place exclusively in the theatre itself, demands just as much time and perseverance as learning to play a musical instrument. Shows are subject to seasonality and won't all be available at one time. Be sure to check back to see what new shows will be playing next.

The Salzburg Marionette Theatre is definitely worth a visit for young and old. Already in the entrance hall and also in the passageway to the theatre hall, you can learn a lot of interesting facts about the creation or production and the history of the puppets, can also admire them on site (partly behind glass). The short version of the Magic Flute definitely benefits the younger visitors, whose attention span is rather shorter, but of course also "impatient" tourists . Particularly impressive is the beginning of the play, where during the overture the (still) visible "puppeteers" set up the scenery and move the puppets into position, before the black curtains only release the stage design and puppets. This gives the audience an approximate impression of how such a performance (by human hand) comes about.

Very great and recommended activity in Salzburg! We visited the short version of the Magic Flute (30€ per ticket, category 1). It was very impressive to admire the puppet art with Mozart music in the beautiful Baroque hall! Would do it again in a heartbeat!

One hour show was perfect, we’ll done. Great for kids but more interesting if you actually understand German.
