The San Diego Zoo is a 100-acre wildlife park and home to over 12,000 rare and endangered animals, representing more than 650 species and subspecies. Located just north of downtown San Diego in Balboa Park, the Zoo is also an accredited botanical garden, caring for more than 700,000 individual plants, including a prominent curated assemblage of close to 13,000 specimens, representing 3,100 species.
The expansive new 3.2-acre Wildlife Explorers Basecamp is designed to appeal to all ages and foster empathy for wildlife by exploring nature. Built on the site of the historic Children’s Zoo, the basecamp features fresh and innovative elements, including eight buildings and habitats dispersed throughout four different habitat zones: Rainforest, Wild Woods, Marsh Meadows and Desert Dunes.
Tickets must be purchased at least one day prior to visit.

5.00There is do much to see, so plan to spend an entire day (or more!) at the San Diego Zoo. Take the SkyTram in at least one direction and start your visit by taking the Zoo bus tour (30-40 minutes excluding waiting in line for a bus. Also, wear comfortable walking shoes because the Zoo is large and the terrain is very hilly. Bring a refillable water bottle with toy. The staff and volunteers are very knowledgeable and helpful.

5.00The San Diego zoo was an exceptional way to spend the afternoon while visiting family. The whole experience was a smooth event, parking, walk to exhibits and the tour bus. Highly recommend the SD Zoo.

5.00I've been taking my baby girl to the zoo while on maternity leave and the volunteers and employees in the red shirts are always so friendly and knowledgeable about the park and animals. I always have a good time and I am looking forward to bringing my toddler for a full family day.

ADA Friendly and Always Such a Great Visit

5.00I am a member. Was able to take my mom. I was worried about her walking too much. We were helped by a volunteer to get an ADA bus to take us to the far side by the pandas. So thankful for that. My only complaint is the glass between us and the pandas are so reflective that we can’t get a good picture without the crowd showing up in the picture. We first took the bus around to see the whole zoo. Loved that. Of course, love the mission, vision and value of the organization. Every worker or volunteer we interacted with were so helpful and friendly. Came at a time where many of the usually sleeping animals were out and about.

5.00Clean. The bus trip was the best. We started off with it and it gave us a good idea of where everything is. The workers and volunteers were friendly. The animals has activities to so. And hearing the animals is magical.
