Standing Stones of Stenness
Originally there were twelve stones, some standing up to six metres high. Today only four remain. The function is unclear but our best guess is that they were involved in activities and ceremonies celebrating the relationship between living and past communities.
Broch of Gurness
This impressive Iron Age complex is one of the most outstanding examples of a later prehistoric settlement to survive in Scotland.

Inga gave us an hour’s walking tour through Kirkwall, pointing out the places of interest and local history, with a passionate love of her home city. We ended up at an old harbour building being introduced to Lorraine, who again spoke passionately about the local food laid out in front of us. Before we tucked into our lunch, we were put to work to bake oatcakes, which was fun. The lunch was a delicatessent triumph…all of the products had a maximum 3 mile food-miles, which was Brilliant! Locally distilled beers and spirits accompanied our feast. I’m a hard-nosed businessman, who was really impressed with Lorraine’s entrepreneurial skills which radiated with the passion she has for keeping the Orkney way of life alive. Bravo, keep doing what you're doing, its important.

Orkney Private tour with Viator Chris was our tour guide. We saw standing stones, learned about the Picts, saw old grave stones and churches, My favorite was visiting a chapel built during WW2 by Italian POWs

The guide, Lorraine knew her facts and was proud and excited about her work and country. The tour was was well planned and timed out. The group was just the right size (not too large). It was a great way to experience the Neolithic history of northern Scotland/Orkney.

Our guide Ian (I know I spelled the name wrong) but he was absolutely brilliant! He is so passionate about these islands. Knows every nook and cranny, part of history, significance and little tid bits of interesting facts of these islands. We were just so impressed. We would come back here again but only do a tour with him. He truly is the best!

This was a well organized tour that is great for cruise ship passengers. Michael was an excellent tour guide and Nicky was a great driver. Michael’s informative and engaging narratives were great. He was very knowledgeable and made it a fantastic tour.

It was an outstanding experience. Our guide Lorraine proved to have a great knowledge of history and archeology and gave us a complete lesson on the places that we visited. The driver was excellent.

Wonderful day with Lorraine and driver Neil visiting some of the highlights of Orkney Islands around Kirkwall. Very informative, engaging and entertaining small group visit. Heard stories from childhood and how life on the islands is lived throughout the year and how traditions are passed down through generations. Highly recommend! One of the best tours we’ve had.

Tour guide Ronald was more like hiring a driver rather than a guide. We were unfamiliar with the island and he did not explain its history, industry or population unless we asked specific questions. While he was professional he didn’t have a prepared narrative at all and almost seemed uncomfortable with our constant questions. He also did not advise us on toilet facilities, locations to purchase water/snacks or length of time driving between sites. All of this would’ve been helpful. Because of this I can’t recommend this company.

This was our favorite excursion while on our British Isle cruise. Our guide, Karin, and our driver, George, were very friendly and knowledgeable about the history, culture and life on the island. With only 14 in the group, we were able to stay on track and make all the stops listed except for Skara Brae which was due to the location being closed due to the extreme wind. Karin even planned ahead by having the group preorder lunch to prevent us being delayed at the small cafe we stopped at. For those worried that there are not restrooms available on the coach, George made sure to detour to accommodate any needs in that regard. We spent adequate time at all locations and never had any concerns about being late to the ship. George even made a quick stop to point out some seals sunbathing in the bay and Karin brought delicious treats from her bakery to share with us. The experience with this tour only makes us want to visit Orkney again.
