The island is most famous for the Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves), a historic building preserved as a museum and poignant memorial to the Atlantic slave trade. The most haunting feature is the "Door of No Return"—a narrow stone portal opening directly onto the Atlantic, symbolizing the final glimpse millions of Africans had of their homeland before being transported into a life of servitude.
