You’ll find your new furry friends here in a beautiful harbour on the slopes of an extinct volcano and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills. Shamarra Alpacas is just over an hour’s drive (73km) from Christchurch Central, and only a 20 minute trip from the historic seaside village of Akaroa, which is worth visiting for its culture and architecture alone. Our panoramic views of Akaroa Harbour and the rolling hills and peaks of the surrounding valleys are breathtaking and will make every one of your selfies with an alpaca post-worthy. We are open year-round, with the scenery changing beautifully through each season and the alpacas staying cute throughout. Self drive to farm or contact Shamarra Alpacas for transport providers.

5.00The alpacas are very friendly and love to eat. I loved being able to hand feed the baby alpacas. My kids also really enjoyed petting them. The people who worked at the farm were so helpful and informative. Wonderful experience all around.

5.00The tour was well organized - English guide or Chinese speaking guide. It was raining but they provide rain coats. You get to pat the male Alpacas - more friendly. And feed the female Alpacas and their babies. Gift shop to buy Alpacas products.

5.00Excellent tour by guide Helena who took the English speaking group. She patiently explain the culture of Alpacas, dos and don'ts in petting/ hugging the males , females and babies. The animals are tame and friendly and looking for feed. Excellent care of a coffee break and Alpacas cookies on a rainy winter day - rain coats are provided for guests.

5.00We had an amazing time at the llama farm! Our kids (10 and 12) thought the llamas were hilarious (even considering that 2 of us got spit on). The mamas and babies were super hungry and feeding them was our favorite part!

5.00Had a great time visiting the alpaca farm. The animals were gentle, curios and super friendly. We go to feed them take photos and learn about their care. Perfect for families or anyone looking for a calm, unique experience. Wear closed shoes and bring camera Alpacas love posing!
