Mount Rushmore National Memorial
At Mt. Rushmore there is a 14 minute vide about the carving, the sculptor Gutzon Borglum, and workers. The Lincoln Borglum Museum has some great displays about Borglum, his family and his works, the mountain and machinery and the workers. The Presidential Trail is a gradually inclining walk that goes under the faces in the rock rubble with great spots for pictures of the individual faces. If you go further there is a strenuous walk down to the Sculptor’s Studio (open only in the summer months) then back up to the viewing terrace. The Avenue of Flags represents all 50 states and the territories, along with their respective dates of admission to the Union. There is also a new Youth Exploration area recently opened. The large gift shop has many items. The Carvers’ Café and an ice cream shop are available for refreshments with vanilla ice cream from Thomas Jefferson’s original recipe. As we leave we stop for a picture at the side profile of George Washington.
Crazy Horse Memorial
From Mt. Rushmore we drive 30 minutes to Crazy Horse Memorial. This is a 3 sided sculpture which will be the largest in the world when completed. There is a 20 minute video about the carving and the sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and his family that are doing the work. The North American Indian Museum has items from many different Indian tribe. Refreshments are available at the Laughing Water Restaurant. The gift shop has many Native made items for sale. Ziolkowski’s workshop and the log home he built, filled with antiques, are available to walk through. There is a Native American Cultural Center where you can watch Natives making items for sale, as well as display items to see and touch. There is a brass Nature Gate and a huge statue of Fighting Stallions. For an additional $4 you may take a bus that delivers you to the base of the mountain so you can take a full picture of the face of Chief Crazy Horse. The bus ride may be arranged on your own after arriving at the memorial.

My driver, Bruce, wss very knowledgeable about the area. He told me a lot about the monuments, the industry in the area, etc. Fantastic excursion. I do wish that Custer State Park would have been added due to its close proximity to the Crazy Horse Monument.

Ken was our guide. Very engaging. Extremely knowledgeable of the rich and complex history of Rapid City. My wife and I chose to see Mt. Rushmore to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and Ken was wonderful. Affordable Adventures is fortunate to have him!!

Ann R of "Affordable Adventures" was highly informative and took us NOT ONLY to Mt Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial, but also to a few places around Rapid City itself. Rapid City actually has a "Dinosaur Park, " bronze statues of the U. S. Presidents downtown, but also the famous Elks Theatre. Before our tour the next day, we arrived in Rapid City before our room at the Best Western Ramkota would have been available, so we caught a movie at this old theater, but the midday movie is upstairs and you gotta go up a bunch of steps! Ann told us some interesting history about Mr. John Borglum, the head sculptor for Mt. Rushmore, and there is a walkway where you can walk "right under" the 4 faces for closeups! Only the head of Crazy Horse is really done but it will be massive when it is finished, and they did the "jingle dress" dance on a stage there. Tour was over 5 hours.

Nick was a pleasant and very informative guide. He talked about the history of the area in addition to the two main sites we visited. At the sites, he reviewed the setup and advised us on how to make the best use of our time

Our guide was so informative and friendly! We had plenty of time at each stop and he never made us feel hurried. It was a great tour! We saw things we haven’t seen before when we visited in 2002! Wonderful time!
