Explore Amsterdam's iconic canals on our charming cruise aboard the historic salon boat, Sophie (est 1911). With a maximum of 12 guests, this small-group experience ensures a cozy and personalized journey.
Your host and guide for six days a week is Amsterdam native Boudewijn Metzelaar, also known as "Captain Bow." On Saturdays, one of his trusted friends will step in to guide you.
Whether you want to seat indoors or outdoors, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy the cruise, rain or shine, in true Dutch style.
Indulge in a variety of (alcoholic) drinks and delicious nibbles as you relax and enjoy the view. With a WC on board, your comfort is fully catered to throughout the experience.
Captain Bow’s deep connection to Amsterdam and his unique perspective, shaped by his diverse upbringing, promise insightful stories and engaging conversations. The small group size fosters a warm and friendly atmosphere, making this cruise a truly special way to discover the heart of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Canal Ring
All cruises are captained by myself as the captain/owner of the Drift Away. We depart from the Singel no.7 and we will return to this location at the end of the cruise. I do not offer a fixed route, depending on your wishes as guests I will tailor the cruise to you specifically. Due to the custom design of the Drift Away we have access to even the narrowest canals of Amsterdam and are able to pass even the lowest of bridges. If you do not have any preferences I will put together a route which will give you an overview of the canal belt, a few of the small less travelled canals, the Amstel river and the eastern maritime area. As a born and raised ¨Amsterdammer¨ I have a wealth of knowledge about Amsterdams history, culture and the Dutch way of life in general. I love sharing with you about my hometown in an easy going manner, with a good sense of humor and the typical Dutch straight forwardness!
The Jordaan
We will pass through the pitoresque district the Jordaan. The name of the Jordaan finds its origin in the French word Jardin, meaning garden. Many of the streets in the district are named after flowers.

5.00This small group tour was suggested by our concierge. Bow was very hospitable and gave us a great history tour of Amsterdam by water. We met two other couples on the boat and we all ended up going to a pub afterwards. Very fun afternoon!

5.00The tour was very impressive and informative. Captain Fokko is very freindly and service minded. As the group was small, the boat was not crowned and we could clearly hear story told by the captain. We took the boat on 30th December. It's during Amsterdam Light Festival, so we could enjoy the impressive night view with the beautiful lighting along the canal.

5.00Would definitely recommend! We went on New Years Eve in the afternoon and had the best experience! The captain was great fun and super knowledgeable about Amsterdam’s history! If you come here you have to book with this company!

5.00This was beautiful - a great way to see a lot of Amsterdam. The inside of the boat is heated well, and the blankets provided made sitting outside enjoyable.

5.00Taking the canal tour with Bow was great! The boat is small enough that you don't feel crammed in and has a covered section if you are cold or it's raining. He provided drinks and snacks too. His commentary on the area was informative and entertaining. We were glad that we didn't pick one of the larger boats because Bow's canal tour was very memorable!

5.00Booked for a multi person cruise and got lucky that it was just the two of us plus the captain. The boat was beautiful. The captain was an excellent guide- genuinely friendly and kind. He shared a lot about Amsterdam— not only pointing out the typical tourist sites but also deepening our understanding of Dutch culture and political philosophy. We finished the tour having seen many sights we wouldn’t have been easily able to cover by foot or bike and with a newfound knowledge of Dutch society and culture. This was by far the most memorable part of our trip to Amsterdam. Would highly recommend.

5.00We took a Bows cruise onboard the Sophie. It was a lovely clean boat and we were very well looked after by Captain John. He was very knowledgable and friendly and really came across that he loved his job. Highly recommend to do the trip. It’s a great way to see Amsterdam

5.00My wife and I did a Christmas cruise starting in Amsterdam. We arrived a few days early to take in the city. I did some research before we left and booked a cruise on Sophie. It was just a short walk from our hotel, Kimpton De Witt, and an easy find. We arrived just before sunset as planned. We got a very nice welcome, and a surprise that we were the only two booked for this cruise. I didn't think it could get better, but it did. I'll add that I've got some experience in woodworking so Sophie caught my attention right away. She's over 100 years old, and certainly well maintained. I was glad we had some daylight to look around and appreciate it. Then onto the cruise. It was wonderful. Just the three of us including the captain who somehow seemed like a friend we hadn't seen in a while. Great conversation, views, and impressive refreshments. The cruise was fantastic, the views with Christmas added along the way, made it even better. So the short version of the review is: You really want to do this. Sophie is a beautifully crafted and well maintained ship. There won't be more than 12, and if you are lucky like us, even better. You'll feel welcomed, the canals are gorgeous and even better at night. Just to note, after you leave and you pass the tapas place, you should consider stopping in. The food is fantastic.

5.00Wow! What a special night with our captain! His name I’m struggling to remember how to spell it but it is something Fukkkor and he was great about sharing so much info about Amsterdam as we cruised the canals with glowing windows and twinkle lights at every turn. And he was equally entertaining and FUN!! Were had the best time!! True to his word he makes a great G+T. He was generous with blankets that were cozy and drinks. The was, without a doubt, THE highlight of our time in Amsterdam!! DO THIS CRUISE! You will be glad you did! Cheers!
