Alms Giving Ceremony
[5:30 am opition only] In Buddhism, alms or almsgiving is the respect given by a lay Buddhist to a Buddhist monk, nun, spiritually-developed person or other sentient being. It is not charity as presumed by Western interpreters. It is important to know the ceremony is also a spiritual practice to accumulate good karma for those who give the alms. It is closer to a symbolic connection to the spiritual realm and to show humbleness and respect in the presence of the secular society. The act of almsgiving connects the human to the monk and what he represents. The morning alms giving is a living Buddhist tradition for the people of Luang Prabang which, because of its beauty, has become a major tourist attraction. However, when tourists are unaware of its customs their inappropriate behaviors can be disruptive.
The Morning Market
[5:30 am opition only] I Following alms giving, we visit a local morning market. Luang Prabang morning market lining a couple of quiet streets near the Royal Palace, starts early and is over by mid-morning. It sets up along a couple of side-streets next to one of the city’s many Wats. A butcher and some of the more touristy stalls have actual tables for their wares. But most of the vendors, selling anything from rice, to fresh vegetables, to steamed fish, frogs, and anything else that might be the day’s catch, just set up on the ground. We go back to your accommodation and have a free time for breakfast until 8:30 am.

5.00A wonderfully curated introduction to Luang Prabang—peaceful, insightful, and beautifully paced. The early alms-giving ceremony set a reflective tone, the climb up Mount Phousi rewarded us with stunning views, and the visit to the Royal Palace Museum deepened our appreciation of Lao history. A meaningful experience that truly showcases why this city is recognized by UNESCO for its unique cultural heritage. Highly recommended.

1.00I enjoyed the tour but am extremely frustrated by the fact that I have emailed the tour operator 3 times in 24 hours asking for them to check the van for my missing expensive sunglasses that I was wearing just before ending the tour. I even sent them this photo and they are ignoring me!!!

5.00We went on the tour with our guide Mr. Boun. He is not only very charismatic, smart and kind, but actually also a former monk, which really elevated the experience to a whole new level. DO NOT SKIP the aims ceremony (followed by the morning market tour and a climb to Phousi Hill), as these are the best parts of the tour !

4.00This company offers join in shared city tours (about $35 per person) but only if they have enough people and the staff can only confirm the day before… so there’s a risk that the tour won’t go ahead and you have to pay for a private one which is more expensive. The guide was very good and made sure to explain a lot of the sites as well as Laotian culture and heritage. Definitely worth it for those wanting a comprehensive visit of the city’s cultural sites! Also, it’s better to book online if paying by card. If you pay by card at the office, they charge a 3% bank fee. Paying online doesn’t have a fee!

4.00Our guide had good English-speaking skills and took us on a nice half-day walk around the city. He did a good job of finding spots for us to rest and learn. We didn’t do the morning alms ceremony as we found it seems wasteful to make so much food that the monks throw out beside there is too much of it.
Great start to Luang Prabang visit, highly recommended!

5.00The tour can be booked as a group or private tour, and it follows all the key landmarks in Luang Prabang. There is also an option to add the alms giving ceremony and the morning market visit - in this case, the tour will start at ab. 5am, with a breakfast break (in your hotel or in town), and then go on until afternoon. It is well planned and professionally organised. My guide was very knowledgeable and fluent in English. Overall - a great start to Luang Prabang visit, as it will give you an orientation around town and ideas to explore later on. Highly recommended.

5.00Tour was nice in that it hit all of the high points in town. Air conditioned can between the two farthest spots. Tour guide Bun was informative, easy going, answered questions , spoke good English. And he was funny! Would recommend for a great starting point your first morning in Luang Prabang.

3.00My guide was Boon, and his English was pretty good. He complained about the Chinese tourists *repeatedly* during our day, even making aggressive gestures and facial expressions at them as we walked around. I understand there's a history, but I found it extremely rude and inappropriate. For me, it took away from the positive vibe that I wanted for my tour. He took us to his old temple and I didn't catch the name of it. I asked the company many times afterwards to please let me know, and they never did. The sites we stopped at were interesting and Luang Prabang is a very quaint, cute town.
Worth the money!
