Alms Giving Ceremony
[5:30 am opition only] In Buddhism, alms or almsgiving is the respect given by a lay Buddhist to a Buddhist monk, nun, spiritually-developed person or other sentient being. It is not charity as presumed by Western interpreters. It is important to know the ceremony is also a spiritual practice to accumulate good karma for those who give the alms. It is closer to a symbolic connection to the spiritual realm and to show humbleness and respect in the presence of the secular society. The act of almsgiving connects the human to the monk and what he represents. The morning alms giving is a living Buddhist tradition for the people of Luang Prabang which, because of its beauty, has become a major tourist attraction. However, when tourists are unaware of its customs their inappropriate behaviors can be disruptive.
The Morning Market
[5:30 am opition only] I Following alms giving, we visit a local morning market. Luang Prabang morning market lining a couple of quiet streets near the Royal Palace, starts early and is over by mid-morning. It sets up along a couple of side-streets next to one of the city’s many Wats. A butcher and some of the more touristy stalls have actual tables for their wares. But most of the vendors, selling anything from rice, to fresh vegetables, to steamed fish, frogs, and anything else that might be the day’s catch, just set up on the ground. We go back to your accommodation and have a free time for breakfast until 8:30 am.

My guide was Boon, and his English was pretty good. He complained about the Chinese tourists *repeatedly* during our day, even making aggressive gestures and facial expressions at them as we walked around. I understand there's a history, but I found it extremely rude and inappropriate. For me, it took away from the positive vibe that I wanted for my tour. He took us to his old temple and I didn't catch the name of it. I asked the company many times afterwards to please let me know, and they never did. The sites we stopped at were interesting and Luang Prabang is a very quaint, cute town.

We had a wonderful alms giving experience and half day city tour of the main attractions of Luang Prabang with Mr.Bounlouam, our guide. The pickup was on time at 5.30am from our hotel and we first did the alms giving ceremony which was quite a memorable experience considering it was done the traditional way and no Chinese tourists screaming and shouting. We did a quick tour of the morning market after this and our guide took us to climb the Phousi hill, entering from the National museum side and exiting on the opposite side parallel to the Namkhan river, which was surreal experience. After this we were dropped to our respective hotels for breakfast and picked up at 9.30am to resume the 2nd half of the tour starting with the national museum complex. We could little less time in the palace specially I felt and cover the remaining two temples more leisurely. Wat Xienthong is very beautiful while Wat Sensoukharam has its own charm. Our guide was very knowledgeable and answered our questions patiently. Would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Luang Prabang

The alms ritual was very fascinating. Mr Kwan was very helpful.by explaining what to do. Mr Vone took us on the 1/2 day tour. We enjoyed the day market where we learned about the various local foods. We also learned about the local history of the Royal Palace and the Wat Xieng Thong. Very enjoyable tour.

The half day tour was excellent. Our Tour guide Wong was very good. Even if the tour was raining, it did not quell his enthusiasm to explain everything to us, starting from the Market up to the UXO. The Temples were majestic. Wong explained to us the stories of each and the Buddhas. He was very knowdgeable about the Buddhas. We enjoyed the tour very much bec of our Tour Guide's knowledge. Thank you.

This tour was great - really enjoyed it. Only thing I would mention is there is a lot of walking and it was really hot & humid (which can’t be controlled), The guide Boun made the tour - he was funny & very knowledgeable

This tour was OK, but it could have been a lot better. We saw the morning market, the museum, and 3 temples. I would have liked to have seen more of the city. We spent about an hour in the museum, but we could have done that on our own. We did a lot of walking, which is fine, but when we have a van available, we should be seeing more sites. I would look for better options.
