Alms Giving Ceremony
[5:30 am opition only] In Buddhism, alms or almsgiving is the respect given by a lay Buddhist to a Buddhist monk, nun, spiritually-developed person or other sentient being. It is not charity as presumed by Western interpreters. It is important to know the ceremony is also a spiritual practice to accumulate good karma for those who give the alms. It is closer to a symbolic connection to the spiritual realm and to show humbleness and respect in the presence of the secular society. The act of almsgiving connects the human to the monk and what he represents. The morning alms giving is a living Buddhist tradition for the people of Luang Prabang which, because of its beauty, has become a major tourist attraction. However, when tourists are unaware of its customs their inappropriate behaviors can be disruptive.
The Morning Market
[5:30 am opition only] I Following alms giving, we visit a local morning market. Luang Prabang morning market lining a couple of quiet streets near the Royal Palace, starts early and is over by mid-morning. It sets up along a couple of side-streets next to one of the city’s many Wats. A butcher and some of the more touristy stalls have actual tables for their wares. But most of the vendors, selling anything from rice, to fresh vegetables, to steamed fish, frogs, and anything else that might be the day’s catch, just set up on the ground. We go back to your accommodation and have a free time for breakfast until 8:30 am.

4.00I enjoyed this tour. Mornimg alms was a fairly quick but good spiritual experience, which felt fairly authentic! The trip through the market also had the right amount of time committed to it. And the climb up to the viewpoint was done before our breakfast pause, which was appreciated before the crowds and heat built up. After breakfast, the visit to the King's Palace was well paced, as was the temple tour. Ended just after midday but i think that is adequate after such an early start, and i felt satisfied that i had seen enough of what Luang Prabang has to offer! Tour guide was very informative and knowledgeable, but a little difficult to understand at times. Worth doing.

5.00Just the experience of sharing food with the monks in the morning is worth the whole tour. It is a unique experience that brings peace... The guide, Mr. Vone was kind and agency throughout the time he was with me, always sharing history and knowledge. Despite being alone, which was very kind from the agency, I felt super comfortable. I recommend everyone the experience and the guide. It will be several hours of knowledge and fun through the city.

5.00A wonderfully curated introduction to Luang Prabang—peaceful, insightful, and beautifully paced. The early alms-giving ceremony set a reflective tone, the climb up Mount Phousi rewarded us with stunning views, and the visit to the Royal Palace Museum deepened our appreciation of Lao history. A meaningful experience that truly showcases why this city is recognized by UNESCO for its unique cultural heritage. Highly recommended.

1.00I enjoyed the tour but am extremely frustrated by the fact that I have emailed the tour operator 3 times in 24 hours asking for them to check the van for my missing expensive sunglasses that I was wearing just before ending the tour. I even sent them this photo and they are ignoring me!!!

5.00We went on the tour with our guide Mr. Boun. He is not only very charismatic, smart and kind, but actually also a former monk, which really elevated the experience to a whole new level. DO NOT SKIP the aims ceremony (followed by the morning market tour and a climb to Phousi Hill), as these are the best parts of the tour !

4.00This company offers join in shared city tours (about $35 per person) but only if they have enough people and the staff can only confirm the day before… so there’s a risk that the tour won’t go ahead and you have to pay for a private one which is more expensive. The guide was very good and made sure to explain a lot of the sites as well as Laotian culture and heritage. Definitely worth it for those wanting a comprehensive visit of the city’s cultural sites! Also, it’s better to book online if paying by card. If you pay by card at the office, they charge a 3% bank fee. Paying online doesn’t have a fee!
