Plovdiv Old Town

The tour starts with pick up from your centrally located hotel/accommodation in Sofia. After approximately an hour and a half drive, we will reach Plovdiv. Plovdiv is said to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe. The city has cultural and economic significance both in the past and in the present due to its strategic location. Pieces of evidence of its millennial history can be found all over the place – from the Roman Theatre to the Ottoman mosques. This is the reason why Plovdiv is one of the most charming sights in Bulgaria- wherever you look you will find history, a legend from a different period, traces of glorious past and at the same time, it’s a pleasure to see how vivid is it still and how it continues to develop and writes its new history. There we will visit the highlights – the Roman Theatre, the Roman Stadium, and have a walk in the Old Town with typical for the Revival Period house museums and narrow cobblestone streets. Afterward, we will have lunch.

Assenova krepost (Asen's Fortress)

When we are done with our traditional Bulgarian lunch, we will head towards the final destination of the tour – Asenova Fortress (approx. 25 min drive from Plovdiv). Asen's Fortress is situated on the top of a cliff in Rodopi Mountain, at approx. 20 km distance from Plovdiv. It is a Medieval fortress with a rich history and breathtaking view.

The tour was wonderful! The architecture of old Plovdiv is very beautiful; there are many Roman ruins, Assen's fortress and the serenity of Bachkovo monastery were a great experience as well. The tour was exceptionally well organized, our guide picked us up from the hotel, even though our hotel wasn't on the list of pick-up locations. We started exactly on time - at 8:40am and everything was perfect. The guide had a university degree of archaeology and was very knowledgeable about the history of Plovdiv and Bulgaria. Overall, I would recommend this tour to anyone, who wants to experience some of the history and culture of Bulgaria.

Be ready for a lot of walking. Best to go on cooler days. 2hr drive to Plovdiv - a beautiful town with a lot of history. The nearby Monastery is also beautiful.

Excellent small tour with knowledgeable guide. Shout out to Teodor who as an expert historian and linguist provided the historical, cultural, and geographical story of Bulgaria's archeological wonder, the city of Plovdiv. If you love talking about the Roman Empire, and are fascinated with the Bulgarian Renaissance of the 19th century, you will love this tour of old Plovdiv homes. Also visited awesome Asenov Fortress, and beautiful Batchkovo Monastery. This is a great tour for the curious, history buffs, and those who love hearing the story of Bulgaria, its people, and land while traveling.

Wonderful small group (5 guests in total) day trip into the country… visiting beautiful town of Plovdiv, historic fortress and absolutely stunning monastery. Many thanks to our guide Daniel who picked us on time, shared his knowledge of Bulgarian and regional history and culture. Daniel made the overall experience a memorable one. Daniel was a superb guide. He explained so much of the history and he drove many miles to get us to the wonderful places that were on the tour. I can’t praise him enough for the experience. Incredible tour of Plovdiv. The fortress was phenomenal and he took fantastic photos of us. The monastery was inspirational. So much to see and learn about. Very inspiring. Highly recommend this to everyone!!
