  • Charlotte got the job done!

Charlotte was wonderful at allowing us to set the pace and pick the places to stop within Shilin market. She was great at showing us the ropes and even taught us how to use the Taiwan metro system. Met us early at the start and was mindful of our preferences. Very friendly and outgoing too.

Green was our tour guide, and he was great. He met us at our hotel, and we took the train to the night market, no complaints whatsoever! But.... in hindsight, this was a tour that I should have just done on my own. Not to complex to navigate the particular market we went to.

If you want to eat like a local this tour is a great opportunity. My guide Alice did an excellent job walking me through the Night Markets and showing me the foods that Taiwanese people love. Although there are some outlandish options that might test a westerner, there are also plenty of tamer options as well. We even got lucky and scored some fresh Chinese Bayberries which have a very short season.

  • Disappointing Tour Experience – Needs More Depth for the Price

The night market tour was, unfortunately, a disappointment. Our guide, Green Huang, was warm and kind, but at this price point, I expected a higher level of English proficiency (at least a 7+) and a guide capable of providing meaningful historical and cultural context. Green’s English was closer to a 5 or 6, and while he was friendly, he struggled to add the kind of narrative depth that brings chaotic night markets to life. I was surprised by the language barrier, given that he’s worked for a U.S. company in a technical liaison role—perhaps his communication there was mostly written or limited to technical topics. That said, he was flexible and did take us to both Raohe and Shilin markets in one evening, which would’ve been logistically difficult without a local. He also made a useful pivot to Wufenpu after we mentioned wanting to buy socks, which we appreciated. Still, the experience ultimately felt like we were paying a high price just to follow someone around and try a few snacks. I don’t fault Green—my guess is the guide takes home a small cut while the platform (Viator) takes the lion’s share. But that’s exactly why Viator should be adding value: by setting clear standards and expectations for its guides. At one point, my wife asked Green about the Dutch colonial period in Taiwan, and he said he didn’t know the Dutch had ever been there. That was surprising. A guide leading cultural tours should be familiar with such major historical touchpoints—even if just enough to offer a basic explanation or segue into local relevance. It further underscored the sense that this tour lacked depth and historical grounding. Why not ensure guides are prepared to teach guests something? For example: • What’s the origin story of Taiwan’s night markets? • How did they evolve during the Japanese colonial period? • Who licenses the vendors, and how does the system work? • What’s life like for the workers behind the scenes? • Are there any legendary vendors or stories that define the culture? A tour like this has so much potential, but ours skimmed the surface. Sorry, Green—we enjoyed your company, but this is an honest review..

  • Great food tour with Charlotte!

I had an awesome food tour with Charlotte on Saturday night! We went to Shilin night market and there was an abundance of different food options to try! We also got lucky that we came across some birthday celebrations for a key figure in Taoism - Mazu. There were dancers, firecrackers and music in the streets! It was really cool! Charlotte was a great tour guide! She was so easy to talk to. Told me about local foods, but also about life in Taiwan in general! She’s a great guide! Thank-you Charlotte!
