Built in the 12th century as their spiritual headquarters, this Gothic church served as the burial site for Templar masters, including Gualdim Pais, the founder of Tomar. Admire its elegant yet simple façade, the striking rose window, and the unique detached bell tower, once used as a watchtower. 5.00We highly, highly recommend the Templar Knights tour—it was truly one of the highlights of our visit to Portugal. Darren takes you on an immersive journey through centuries of Templar history, starting at the almoural castle and weaving stories/history that bring the past vividly to life all the way to Christ Cathedral. His depth of knowledge is incredible, but what really stands out is how engaging and passionate he is - he doesn’t just share facts, he tells the story in a way that makes you feel part of it. You come away with such a richer understanding of the Templars and the historical significance of Tomar. Every stop along the way feels meaningful, and Darren’s insights add layers you simply wouldn’t get exploring on your own. We honestly wish we had planned more time in Tomar to soak it all in - it’s one of those places that lingers with you. Which just means… we’ll absolutely have to come back!!!

5.00Darren is an excellent guide. His knowledge of the Templar Knights, Tomar history and Portugal’s history was superb. We learned not only about the Castle and the Convent of Christ but also visited Almoural Castle. If I could, I would give this tour more than five stars. Do not miss this tour!

5.00Great tour of the Templar sites with Darren! He was extremely knowledgeable and also able to tell a good story, which is essential. When we visited the castle and some parts of the convent of Christ were closed but he kept finding ways to keep things interesting. Darren drove us to see other fortifications and sites of interest to illustrate the history and myths around the templars. He had a lot of local knowledge of the sites that we would not have appreciated in a larger group. Highly recommended.

5.00Darren provided the history of the Templar factually with some solid information. Due to recent storm the Castle & Convent was closed on Feb 26 so he brought us to Almoural Castle while providing the ground information for the completion of our tour on Feb 27 when the Convent opened. Darren was a wealth of knowledge and shared it in a casual manner over coffee, while driving and touring. Definitely worthwhile for Templar history fans.

5.00Darren is a brilliant guide. He took us to the obvious wonderful places in the Convent but also some hidden corners. He’s truly expert in the history of the Knights Templar, Tomar and Portugal. He’s truly expert carefully distinguishes between myth and provable facts, so one can understand the stories but also what is historically accurate. All told, a fabulous private tour!

5.00We are a large group of medieval history enthusiast friends who holiday together, with a wide range of ages and equally wide range of mobility issues. Darren helped us in advance of our week-long trip to Portugal by supporting our planning for Tomar and our transfers to and from Lisbon. Darren assisted us in choosing restaurants, transport, and places to visit. Darren repeatedly went beyond our expectations, for example, organising a birthday cake for one of our knights. We were already quite knowledgeable about Templars, and Darren's in-depth knowledge about Tomar and the region's churches and castles really made the holiday just right for us. We recommend Darren's Templar tours, whether you know nothing about the Templars and want to learn, or you are a Medieval history academic looking to see the sites you've studied. Darren fit in completely with our group and was very adept and patient at adapting to our needs. To ‘sum up’, Darren provided a unique Tomar Templar guided experience. The images and video are a visual experience of our visit to Tomar.
