Not too exciting at the start, if you are not interested in the Belfast history leading up to building the Titanic, but it is an important part of the story. Make sure you read stories of people at the beginning that show up later in the museum. The second part where the ship was being built, and from then on were more interesting to me: as well as heartbreaking.

I have always been very interested in Titanic and had wanted to visit this museum since it opened but unfortunately it proved to be an underwhelming experience. A striking building from the outside, the entrance area contains a couple of eateries, ticket booths and the inevitable gift shop. After purchasing our tickets we went by escalator to the next floor which consisted primarily of a collection of information boards before taking a lift to the upper floors. Here we were greeted by a board indicating there would be a 20 minute wait from that point of a queue. As my partner has mobility issues he would not have been able to queue for that long and still be physically capable of then walking around the rest of the exhibit. Consequently he returned to the hotel leaving me to continue solo so a complete waste of money on his ticket. After standing in line for 10 minutes or so another sign appeared which showed that the queue was actually for the shipyard ride and that if you wanted to bypass this you could walk straight through to the main exhibit halls. Personally i found the shipyard ride to not be worth the wait as it was not particularly informative nor atmospheric. A big negative for me as a solo female was being expected to sit in the back of the ride car secured by the safety bar through a darkened space with an unknown male. When being herded onto the ride i did point out to the employee that this man was nothing to do with me, her response being simply “ i know”. Clearly flagging this up with her should have alerted her to the fact that i was not comfortable with the prospect of a ride in a confined darkened space with a strange male but no offer was made for me to wait for the next car which would have been along a few seconds later. The ride includes an audio commentary which is delivered in a local accent. Whilst i accept this adds authenticity i believe a balance needs to be found between authenticity and strength of accent used to give visitors a chance of actually comprehending what is being said. I am English born and bred but still struggled so I’m sure it would be incomprehensible to the many international visitors. After exiting the ride you enter the main exhibit floor. Here there are reconstructions of the inside of the different levels of cabin that were available on Titanic plus a form of video view of the different decks. Basically you stand in a space and on three sides you experience an elevator type experience as the views of each different deck is projected in turn from the engine rooms to the upper deck. Spread throughout the museum there are a small number of artefacts recovered from Titanic and towards the end there is a glass floor beneath which is a view of the wreck and predictably a mock up of the prow railings for visitors to take photos of their own Kate/Leo pose from the film. Overall my impression of the whole thing was unimaginative, rather boring and incredibly dated for a museum that is only about 14 years old. Far too much reliance on information boards and basic audio tour with very little effort made to enhance the visitor experience. Many years ago i visited a Titanic experience at one of the Las Vegas hotels which was excellent. They provided reconstructions of lots of different things such as the communications office where the Marconi people were, various cabins and most impressively they provided a small reconstruction of the promenade deck. This was set up to give a sense of what a passenger standing on the deck might have experienced when the ship hit the ice berg. The deck was dark with a clear starlit sky with the temperature chilled right down and an audio track. Admittedly this was an “attraction” rather than a museum but i feel a happy medium could be found especially with the range of technology now available. I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling museums need to move on from great boards of written information, which become overloading very quickly. Editing things down and pulling out the most pertinent bits of information supported by good physical visual props often allow people to appreciate things more. Obviously the props would not be original but i think they would enhance the overall experience and sit comfortably alongside the genuine artefacts as long as their nature was made clear. For example i would have been interested to me a reproduction of one of Titanic’s lifeboats to try and imagine what it would have felt like to be lowered down to the ocean in one and how crowded it felt depending upon which boat you ended up it. Everything considered this is not somewhere i would recommend visiting in its present format.

A great experience from start to finish. Loved the ride and final area where it felt you were watching the discovery of the wreck in person. Very sympathetic and caring exhibition. Only negatives were it wasn't alwsys easy to see where you should go to follow the route and it was very congested so you couldn't always get to see the information boards in each area Maybe stagger entrances a big better to avoid crowding

Great story from the industries that were needed to build Titanic to its full and sad first journey. Needs minimum 3 hrs to complete.

Titanic museum was very well done. Eight family members spent about 2 hours in the museum and everyone -- ages 11 thru 76, all enjoyed it.
