The history of Valletta is representative of that of the whole island: a mixture of influences from all the foreign powers that ruled it in turn throughout the centuries. This mixture can be seen everywhere - in the artistic and architectural styles, the Maltese language itself, and naturally also in the traditional Maltese cuisine.

Lust, gluttony, greed, envy, pride and all sorts of other sins might sound like the basis of a soap opera, but they can also be easily associated with the Knights of St. John, once the Order started going into decline. Its finances, its military prowess and even its morals crumbled through the decades, relegating the Golden Age of Malta under the Knights to a faint memory of the past. This process is perhaps best reflected in the lives led by some of the Grand Masters. The monastic vows of poverty, chastity and obedience where quickly replaced. Poverty was expressed in the lavish palaces and impressive baroque architecture which adorns the city to this day. Chastity was replaced by mistresses and courtesans, and eventually, by illegitimate offspring. Obedience became useful only when it was time to overthrow an old Grand Master from his throne. The truth is that in later years, when the Holy War against the Ottoman empire finished and there was no scope for crusades, many knights did not have the vocation, or lost it as soon as they arrived in Valletta - a city full of temptations. Many of them succumbed, young and old alike, spending their free time gambling, dueling and chasing prostitutes. We love taking food tours as a way to get to know a city. This one was perfect because we only were in Valetta for the day. We got to experience a diversity of foods, from street food to chocolate, to a lunch as the finale.

A first for us experiencing a walking tour with a food tasting theme and it didn’t disappoint! Our guide, Matthew, was both knowledgeable, interesting and made a point engaging with his whole group. We loved mixing both the history of Malta (specifically Valletta) and how the history influenced the food. We got to taste a wide variety of local quisine and trust me you will not leave hungry! Great few hours, well worth the money

The food tour was excellent. Alizea combined great food experiences with the interesting food history of Malta. We started off gently with pastizzi and after various stops, the whole tour culminated in a visit to the central market with a selection of Maltese street food. A really enjoyable tour - highly recommended.

This was a wonderful way to learn about the food and some of the history of Malta. Our guide Matthew was very knowledgeable, friendly and interesting and the tour was easy paced. There was plenty of food included and the stop at the Chocolate District was an unexpected bonus.
