This is my first bad experience with a Viator tour. We arrived at Versailles, and our guide didn’t have the admission tickets. Evidently the tour company (Paris City Tours) failed to provide them to her and their “coordinator” was nowhere to be found. Consequently, we lost half an hour waiting for the guide to contact someone at their office to get the tickets. Once we finally entered the palace (after waiting outside in the very hot sun), the sheer amount of visitors made it nearly impossible to navigate the tour. Unless we were standing right near the guide, which was impracticable given the number of people, the audio receivers just sounded like static. The crowd wasn’t the tour company’s fault, but Versailles really should limit the number of people they allow to enter at a time. You could barely move, and God forbid you stood still to look at a piece of art, you were inevitably shoved by others wanting to get by. I’m not sure if it was because our time was compressed due to the ticket fiasco, but the guide kept asking the group what they wanted to do (e.g., do you want to see the small apartments? Do you want to see the war exhibits? Do you want to see the gardens?) There were a LOT of people in the tour group. Asking what people want to see inevitably results in confusion with different people wanting to see different things. That’s fine, but there is only one guide. In a group like this, the tour should be planned and not left to the differing viewpoints of the dozens of people in the group. The back and forth with differing desires and multitudes of questions about what was in each place wasted even more of the already limited time. At the end of the guided portion, we were told to meet at the bus at a specific time for the ride back to Paris. We arrived to the bus early, only to be turned away by the driver saying it wasn’t our bus and that another was coming. Several more of this company’s busses came and said the same thing. They send several different tour groups to the same site, each with stickers showing their group number. It seemed like many of the groups had the same departure time and there were far too few busses to accommodate the number of people scheduled to return to Paris. We ultimately ended up leaving 4 busses after our scheduled time, and almost 45 minutes late. When we finally got back, the bus did not drop us at the same place it originally picked us up in the morning. There are a lot of tour providers out there. I’d avoid Paris City Tours and go with another provider. The whole experience was very disorganized and unpleasant.

Our tour guide was a woman named Soraya and she was absolutely unprepared and unprofessional in her approach to our tour. She had no banner or identifying flag so that the group could follow her inside the very crowded venue. We lost her almost immediately after entering the Palace of Versailles and the audio faded quickly as she left the room and left us behind. We attempted to find her in the crowded rooms but we were unable to locate her. After rushing from room to room, we exited the palace and attempted to locate her outside. When we finally found her, she blamed us and said that we were at fault for not keeping up! She then said that we caused her to miss a 3 o clock appointment she had scheduled. This confirms that she was rushing our tour since we were supposed to have a 4 hour tour of Versailles and the Gardens until 3 pm. I think we should have a refund of our money since we didn’t have any significant time inside the palace to view the rooms and certainly did not have any tour guide to hear the history of the palace. If she had used a flag or banner, we would have had a chance to follow her in the crowded hallways but this was not the case. I would NOT recommend this tour to anyone. I am totally disappointed!

The tour started a bit disorganized. People were not directed to busses in loud clear manner. Then there was no audio headset for me initially. The guide to the palace (chateau) was very good giving some relevant historical facts. Once we got off the bus there was more confusion and lack of direction. We had two tour groups in one bus. However I simply followed the only tour guide to the Chateau from the parking lot in which time some other audio was broadcast on the headphones which I still didn’t have. Once at the entry point things got sorted. I was hastily given a headset which worked intermittently until I fiddled with the audio jack. All the while trying to follow my new guide. The guides carried no identifying items (umbrella/tour flag/tour hat or vest) therefore constantly keeping an eye out for where we were headed vs taking in the Palace. The audio was very low volume so difficult to hear without pushing the headphone into my ear. The guide was knowledgable. I was surprised we were out of the palace in about 50 minutes and cut loose to the gardens. The gardens are worth a days trip and pack your own lunch for a picnic on the grounds. The cafe was always lined up so you will waste a good 20 minutes waiting. At the meeting point for return more confusion ensued and we were taken into an active parking lot moved around waiting for the correct bus. I would recommend the guides keep people out of the lot and call for them when ready for everyone’s safety. The trip back there was no commentary and the itinerary mentioned a pass by the louvre which never happened. The destination was amazing but the experience with the tour was not as good as experience as I have had with Viator in the past tour company 3/5 on this one the palace 5/5 therefore overall 4/5. I do want to mention that we did not wait to enter the palace that timing was absolutely perfect and you bypass a large cue of lines!

Nate was the best travel guide. The meeting place was easy to find, the trip was a long day, but we knew that since we were able to see both Cinque Terre and Pisa. Would definitely recommend!!
