The walk is not as strenuous as much of the published information suggests. That said it’s better undertaken by strong walkers only and be prepared for poor weather!

Self-guided, a good long walk, but not overly challenging, with stopping points and benches for rest along the way. Very natural, no gimmicks, not commercial at all.

It was raining, really raining, yet it was well worth the walk. We only had time for Walk 1, the 45 minute walk, and it took our breath away. Quite our favourite of all the geothermals we visited. It was downhill all the way, incredible viewing spots and the icing on the cake was Hell's Crater. Even in the pouring rain this was a really good experience and we were more than happy to take the shuttle bus back to the top.

This is a great place to visit if you are into volcanic processes, nature and wild bird photography! The visitor centre, shop and cafe is excellent, and the staff very helpful and cheerfull. The walk down through the valey is amazing, and there are 3 bus stops to bring you back up at the end of each stage, if you can't face the walk back! It rained for most of our visit, so be prepared with good water-proofs and maybe ask to borrow an umbrella! We saw some great hot springs, fumaroles and even small geysers, as well as a huge range of mostly native wild birds. So if you are a birder, bring you camera and leave plenty of time for photography. If you are in to the birds, the staff can give you a cheat-sheet to help you identfy them.

Loved this mostly downhill walk through hot bubbly streams and steaming cliffsides. The colors of deposits on shorelines and stream beds are amazing. Don’t skip the walk to the lake. So many birds. The bus for the return trip was much appreciated.

We wanted to see geothermal activity without having to sit through a 'cultural experience' and this fitted the bill perfectly. You can do the 1hr, 90 mins, or 2 hour walk. All times are generous, and you pick up the bus to get back to reception building. All areas are clearly signposted, and there is good info along the way. They only lose a mark because it was difficult to get drinks in reception towards the end of the day as they had cashed up. I was very thirsty!

Extremely expensive, and absolutely nil to avoid, there are plenty of other volcanic attractions around that are reasonably priced, if not free. Besides the staff is unpleasant, it’s just a tourist catch on private property looking to make maximum money.

Lovely walk We did the longest effectively 3 different walks and then the boat ride at the end. Lovely views, easy walking.

Took the self-guided hike that was very interesting. Must have been some huge explosions in the 1880s to create the area followed by big ones as recently as the 1970s.

OMG!! I've never seen anything like this before! It felt like I was in one of Jules Verne's novel. Absolutely amazing and incredible place. This is a place you MUST go! I still cannot believe I saw this in real life. Likely there was not many people, we met a couple of them during walk. Very friendly and helpful staff. It's definitely worth the money. Thanks a lot for this unforgettable journey!
