The quickest and most fun option to get to see New Zealands only castle. A fast water taxi ride across the beautiful Otago Harbour to Macandrew Bay, a small seaside village on the Otago Peninsula. Here you transfer to our executive shuttle van for your scenic drive up the hill to the castle. Your entry fee to the castle and gardens is included in your fare.
You'll have an hour and a half to explore the castle and gardens. You'll then be brought back down to the harbour, for your second water taxi ride into Steamer Basin, in the heart of Dunedin.
From Steamer Basin it's a short 5 minute walk to the iconic Dunedin Railway Station and Toitu, the Settlers Museum. This is also the departure point for the Cruise ship shuttles that return to Port.
Please note-
Trips from 9.00am to 11.15am leave from Back Beach, Port Chalmers.
Trips from 12.00 and 12.45pm leave from Steamer Basin, Dunedin city.
All trips conclude in Dunedin City except the 11.15am trip that returns to Port Chalmers at 2.15pm

Our guide is available for the transport and entry to the Castle only. The tour of the castle and gardens is self guided.
Alternative departure points can be arranged subject to availability and other bookings.
Your departure point depends on the time of your tour. Trips from 9.00am till 11.15am depart from Back Beach, Port Chalmers and finish in Dunedin. Trips leaving at 12.00pm and 12.45pm depart from Steamer Basin in Dunedin.

A scenic 10-15 minute water taxi ride across the harbour from Port Chalmers or Dunedin to Macandrew Bay where you will board our shuttle van for a 10 minute ride up the hill to the famous Larnach Castle, the only castle in New Zealand. This service includes your entry ticket to the castle and gardens. You have 1.5 to 2 hours to explore. We then pick you up in the van for the ride back down to the harbour, and your water taxi ride into Dunedin. Options to return to Port Chalmers can be organized on the day of travel. Please note - Trips from 9.00 am - 11.15 am leave from Back Beach, Port Chalmers. Trips from 12.00 and later leave from Steamer Basin, Dunedin city. IMPORTANT NOTE - ALL trips finish in Dunedin City EXCEPT the 11.15 trip from Port Chalmers that returns to Port at 2.30pm

Back Beach Departures

8.30 am - 11.30 am Departures: Departures from 8.30am until 11.15am leave from Back Beach, Port Chalmers. Departures 11.00am and later leave Steamer Basin.

5.00Husband and wife (can’t recall names) tour operators were personable and informative. Seeing the area by boat was an interesting perspective. You’re on your own to tour the gardens and “castle” (large home is probably more accurate) and you do learn a lot about local history. Could have spent a little more time there. You’re then transported to the Dunedin waterfront to finish up.

5.00It was a great experience. Rob, our water taxi driver was helpful, informative and concerned that we have a great experience despite rainy weather. He pointed out wildlife, including a Sea Lion and a Shag bird. His wife Holly was a great shuttle driver and was prompt in pickup and return. Highly recommend them. The castle was very interesting and scenic. Unfortunately the weather prevented a leisurely walk of the grounds. But overall a fun excursion.

5.00A little tricky to find the pick up point for the boat. Happily the information desk at the terminal figured it out. Viator should send you a small map. Everything else was perfect. Husband and wife team could not have made it better. The captain even ordered taxi for us when we departed his tour to get to the octagon as it was drizzling. Fun way to see Larnach Castle.

5.00Holly and Rob offer a fantastic option of transport to the Larnach Castle and Dunedin. We enjoyed our water taxi ride to the Castle despite the foggy weather and Holly took us in the shuttle bus to the castle's front doors. We arrived there before the first big bus of tourists which was terrific. Holly and Rob are the friendliest, personable people who are local to the area. Holly provided extra knowledge about the castle, the family and its history while we were in the shuttle. They also provided info on how to catch local transport back to the cruise ship which led us to finding wonderful local markets in the Port Chalmer's community hall. Support this wonderful family local business. The flat walk from the cruise ship to the pickup point, roughly 7-10 minutes, was easy to navigate with helpful people in the terminal and the instructions and map Rob provided. Highly recommend this tour and supporting local business.

5.00Amazing trip across the water to our destination with Rob.. Great shuttle to the top and back by holly who knows a lot about the castle and the family. Super friendly people. We were lucky enough to see doilphins on our way back too. Brilliant.

5.00This tour was the absolute easiest way to get from our cruise ship docked in Port Chalmers to Larnach Castle. A water taxi piloted by Rob took us across the harbor (beautiful ride!) where we met our shuttle driver, Frankie, who expertly navigated the twists, turns and steep climbs of the road to Larnach Castle. We enjoyed two hours on the grounds exploring on our own both inside and out, before being picked up by Frankie for the drive back down the mountain. Rob was again waiting to ferry us the other way across the harbor to Dunedin for the opportunity to explore this charming city. Rob and Frankie were both extremely professional, answered the group’s many questions and made the outings really fun. I would HIGHLY recommend this excursion and wish you the perfect weather like we were lucky enough to have that day!

Fabulous Tour with Holly & Rob

5.00Holly and Rob are a dynamic duo. We had a private water taxi trip with Rob who then handed us off to his wife Holly who gave us so much history as we drove to the castle. They are both pleasant and professional. We had a great day and highly recommend them to anyone traveling to Dunedin.
