Mago National Park
If you arrive in Jinka in the morning or before noon, we’ll begin your adventure with a drive into Mago National Park to visit the Mursi tribe — one of the Omo Valley’s most well-known and visually striking communities. The Mursi are famous for their lip plates, body scarification, and bold cultural expressions, offering a powerful introduction to the region’s tribal diversity. After spending the morning with the Mursi, we return to Jinka by midday for a relaxed lunch and a chance to refresh. In the afternoon, we continue with two meaningful cultural experiences that deepen your understanding of the Omo Valley:
South Omo Research Centre Museum
This small but fascinating ethnographic museum showcases the rich cultural heritage of over 16 indigenous tribes in the South Omo Zone. You’ll see tribal tools, ornaments, traditional clothing, and historical photos — a perfect way to connect what you saw in the morning with deeper anthropological context.
Jinka
We then visit a nearby Ari village, home to one of the region’s most populous and industrious tribes. Walk through family compounds, meet local artisans making pottery or distilling araki (local liquor), and enjoy the hospitality of this warm community. It’s a calm, authentic experience that contrasts beautifully with the wild landscapes of the morning.
Paradise Lodge, Turmi.

Key Afer
On the way to Turmi, we’ll have the opportunity to meet members of the Banna and Hamar tribes along the roadside, offering early insight into the diverse cultures of the Omo Valley. If your travel falls on a Thursday, we’ll stop at Key Afer Market—the largest and most vibrant in the region. This colorful gathering brings together three major tribes, including the Bena, for trading, socializing, and storytelling. Be sure to check out the shaded café area under the trees, where locals gather to relax and chat.
If your visit falls on a Tuesday, make sure to stop at the vibrant Alduba Market. Larger than the markets in Turmi or Dimeka, Alduba attracts a lively crowd from several surrounding tribes who gather to trade goods, share news, and socialize. One of the market’s highlights is the informal café area beneath the trees at the back—an authentic social hub where locals sit, drink, and chat in the shade. It’s an ideal place to observe the everyday rhythm of life in the Omo Valley.
Depending on the day, you may also experience the Dimeka Market (held on Saturday and Tuesday), one of the best places to see the Hamar people in action. Located about 30 km north of Turmi, this market includes a lively area for souvenirs and tribal crafts.
Turmi
In the afternoon, we’ll visit a traditional Hamar village, spending time with one of the largest and most welcoming communities in the region. If the timing is right and the season allows, you may also witness the extraordinary Hamar bull-jumping ceremony—a rare and powerful rite of passage that occurs with little advance notice. We will spend the next two nights in Turmi, using it as a base to explore surrounding tribal areas. Upcoming highlights include visits to the Dassanech and Nyangatom (Bume) communities—both rich in tradition and cultural depth.
Paradise Lodge, Jinka.
LUNCH

DINNER
Dinner
After breakfast, we cross the Omo River to visit the Nyangatom people, semi-nomadic pastoralists living near the South Sudan border. Their remote villages offer a rare and authentic cultural experience.
We then continue to Korcho, a scenic Kara village overlooking the Omo River. The Kara are known for their stunning body painting using chalk and natural pigments. Spend time exploring the village, meeting locals, and enjoying panoramic views. We return to Turmi by midday. If you’re lucky, you may be invited to a Hamar bull-jumping ceremony—a powerful coming-of-age ritual. As it’s a spontaneous tradition, it’s not guaranteed or included in the official itinerary.
Kanta Lodge, Konso.
DINNER
Dinner
After breakfast, we head to Omorate and cross the Omo River by local boat to visit the Dassanech tribe. Living along the northern shore of Lake Turkana, the Dassanech are known for their resilience in a harsh environment and their distinctive body adornments and hairstyles.
After this unique encounter, we drive through dry, beautiful lowlands to reach the Arbore tribe, a small pastoral community known for their black headscarves, vibrant beadwork, and peaceful demeanor. You’ll have time to walk through their village and learn about their social customs and traditions. Continue to Konso for overnight, a highland town famous for its ancient culture and terraced agriculture.

Konso
In the morning, explore a Konso village, recognized by UNESCO for its complex social systems, walled settlements, and wooden grave markers called waka. Learn how the Konso people have adapted to their hilly terrain with centuries-old terracing and cooperative farming practices.
Dorze Village
We then drive to Arba Minch, stopping for a lunch break before continuing into the highlands to visit the Dorze people. The Dorze are renowned for their tall, beehive-shaped bamboo houses, their skilled cotton weaving, and their breathtaking views over the Great Rift Valley. After the visit, return to Arba Minch for overnight.
Chamo Lake
In the morning, enjoy a relaxing boat trip on Lake Chamo, part of Nech Sar National Park. The lake is home to one of Africa’s highest concentrations of Nile crocodiles, along with hippos, pelicans, and other birdlife. After the excursion, we’ll transfer you to Arba Minch Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa, marking the end of your unforgettable journey through Ethiopia’s cultural heartlands.

One of the best travel experiences we've ever had! It wasn't just another sightseeing tour. It was an incredible opportunity to experience some of Ethiopia's most fascinating cultures and meet communities that have preserved their traditions for generations. A huge thank you to our guide, Berekat. He was fantastic from start to finish. He wasn't just a guide, he became part of the experience. His knowledge of every tribe, their customs, history and way of life was amazing, and he explained everything in a way that was easy to understand and genuinely interesting. What really stood out was the respect he has from the local communities. Everywhere we went, it was clear he had built real relationships over the years, which made our visits feel natural and welcoming. He was also incredibly patient, never rushed us, happily answered all of our questions, and always made sure everyone was comfortable and enjoying themselves. You can really tell he's passionate about what he does, and that made a huge difference to the trip. A big shout-out as well to our driver, DJ. The roads in the Omo Valley are long, rough and challenging, but we always felt completely safe. He handled every road with confidence and somehow always had a smile on his face. The vehicle was spotless every morning, and he never minded stopping whenever we wanted to take photos of the scenery or village life. Our camp chef, Gizaw, deserves just as much credit. We honestly couldn't believe the meals he prepared during our two nights of camping. Being out in such remote places, we expected simple food, but every meal was fresh, tasty and surprisingly varied. After a full day of exploring, sitting down to a hot dinner under the stars was something we looked forward to every evening. He worked incredibly hard behind the scenes and always did it with a smile. The itinerary was excellent. Every day was different, from meeting the Mursi, Hamer, Nyangatom, Kwegu, Kara, Dassanech, Arbore, Konso and Dorze people, to camping in the Omo Valley, exploring traditional villages, and finishing with the beautiful Lake Chamo boat safari. It was well organised, never felt rushed, and gave us plenty of time to enjoy each place. The highlight of the entire trip was definitely our overnight stay with the Kwegu people. This wasn't a staged cultural performance or a quick photo stop, it felt like a genuine opportunity to experience life in one of the most remote communities in the Omo Valley. Spending the evening there, watching the sunset over the Omo River, sitting around the camp, and waking up surrounded by the sounds of the village made us feel connected to the place in a way that's impossible on a day visit. It was peaceful, authentic, and one of those rare travel experiences that reminds you why you travel in the first place. These are the moments we'll remember long after we've forgotten hotel rooms or tourist attractions. A massive thank you to Berekat, DJ and Gizaw for making this such an unforgettable trip. Your professionalism, kindness, sense of humour and genuine care for your guests made all the difference. If you're thinking about visiting the Omo Valley, I can't recommend this team highly enough. This is one of those trips that will stay with us for a very long time.

We got Bereket recommended by another guide in Harar we met through the Austrian embassy. And what a fortuitous recommendation that was! We had the most wonderful, educational, thought provoking and also fun days with Bereket and his driver traveling through the Omo valley. He organised a perfect route for us where we got to meet quite a number of tribes but also had time to explore nature and the amazingly varied landscape. Having grown up in the Omo valley, speaking many of the different languages and being a very compassionate yet easy going young man Bereket was perfectly suited to create an atmosphere of understanding and trust wherever we went. He gave us such an unbelievable experience for which we are are very grateful! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Bereket is a great guide, the best for the Omo Valley region. We traveled as a family (3) and discovered the Valley tribes with enough time and pace to allow us to get to know them better. Not only is the typical photo trip and car. We were able to talk to them, Bereket knows many of their dialects, play with children, fish with men and in some of the villages eat and sleep in the same village. Meeting the Kwegu tribe in a village where children don’t even reach roads was a unique experience. And all with an exquisite respect to its inhabitants that gradually open to visitors and after a few hours allows to have a relationship of mutual curiosity. We turned with the camera full of photos, the memory of unforgettable experiences and the open heart to another reality. I highly recommend it for family use and we are seriously considering repeating it.

Unique experience in a very respectful and safe way. Bereket has a broad and extensive experience in Omo Valley. Everybody knows him and he is a very respected guide in Ethiopia. He knows the region since he is originally from there and speaks fluently many of the dialects of the tribes. We, a Spanish family of three, traveled very safe with Bereket and his driver in a 4x4 Land Cruiser and discover the authentic Omo Valley with direct and quiet contact with the people. The way Bereket organized it allowed us to step by step get used to this drastic change of culture, living, eating and sharing a lot of time with the local people. The encounter with the Kwegu tribe for two days is unforgettable and will be part of our memories for ever. We arrived to a very remote village (there were no paths to get it) and met the people, speak with them, play with the children, fish with the men and sleep in the willage and participate in some of their rituals. Amazing, no words to describe it!!! If you look for an adventure in a respectful and safe way this is the best option. You won’t forget and your memory and your camera will come back full of images that you can not find in another place. I highly recommend it for families because it opens your mind to a different reality and facilitates your integration with local families too.

When having travelled broadly, everytime is harder to get impressed, This time we were shaken from a vast experience, a reality that distances centuries in economic and cultural evolution. When we thought we had already seen enough, the next tribe was Incredible again, giving us new learnings. More to say, we asked Bereket specifically to stay away from the big tours and touristic villages, which was achieved in 90% of the cases, and that’s a super achievement. All under a super personalized, professional and familiar relation with Bereket (and Itu driving us), always finds the solution you need. Great guys to be surrounded by! Thank you for this súper experience!!

The Omo Valley experience was more than I ever expected, it was one of those trips that stays with you long after you’ve left. Getting to spend time with different tribes, witnessing their strength, creativity & way of life up close was pretty special! Pair that with peaceful, open landscapes, and it felt like stepping into a beautiful collision of worlds. ☮️ My guide, Beki, was friendly, thoughtful, and a true local with a deep understanding of the region. Having someone who could explain cultural nuances and answer my random questions (and understand my Aussie accent) made it even better. Some of my favourite moments were with the local kids, especially from the Hamar tribe. Their smiles, laughter, and cheeky energy brought me so much joy. 😊 This trip arrived at a time of year that’s usually tough for me, and yet somehow, it delivered exactly what my soul needed. I’m super grateful for this experience! Ethiopia, I’ll be back soon 🙂
