Discover the Ecuadorean Andes in a breath-taking trip to Cotopaxi, Quilotoa, and Chimborazo, in a three-day mountain biking tour. Descend Cotopaxi on your first day, travel to the most beautiful lake in Ecuador on your second, and go to the closest point on earth to the sun on the third. On top of the natural beauty, you will also have the chance to mingle and share time with Andean Indigenous communities. Llamas, Vicunas, and possibly Condors will be our high altitude companions throughout this adventure. This tour has it all.

Cotopaxi National Park
At 07:00 AM we leave Quito and after driving south for 1,5 hours on the Pan-American highway we reach the park entrance of Cotopaxi National Park. We drive through pine forest and soon we arrive at the Visitors Center of the park. After visiting the Center, we continue the ascent in our 4-wheel drive vehicle until we reach the highest point of the tour, 4.500 meters/15.000 feet. The view from this point is stunning and on a clear day, we are able to see 8 volcanoes. We then put on helmets, gloves and protective pads and the bike adventure on the world’s highest active volcano can begin. The first 8 km will take us down 700 m. on dirt roads through volcanic ash and páramo landscape. At 3.800 m. you actually have to do some pedaling while we head down another 8 km between volcanic rocks and wild horses to our lunch spot by an Inca ruin at 3.700 m. With some luck, we might see a condor or a caracara. We put the bikes back on the jeep and head for the lake of Limpiopungo at 3.800 m. where we start the 16 km downhill biking on dirt roads and the bike adventure is over at this time. We then ascend by jeep in a northwest direction into the western Cordillera arriving at Quilotoa to spend the night. The night's retreat is a simple but clean inn located in Quilotoa run by an indigenous family.
Overnight in a quaint mountain inn. On a clear night see the Milkyway shining above

Laguna Quilotoa
Today we start with an early hike down to the deep, jade-colored Quilotoa Crater Lake. The hike downhill to the lake takes about 30 minutes, and about twice as long to climb back up. But, you can hire a mule or donkey to carry you back to the top, where breakfast will be awaiting you to charge your batteries for the day's adventure! After breakfast, we descend on mountain bikes to Zumbahua. Many years ago, an earthquake destroyed this area. The land has transformed into a rugged formation resembling the terrain from another planet. Lunch is a picnic at a location where we have the opportunity to intermingle with the Quechua Indians or test your artistic skills with the locals painting landscapes of the area. After lunch, we enjoy a 30-minute drive until we reach 4,200 m (13.400 ft). We switch then to human power and the downhill bike ride begins down a long and winding road all the way back to Latacunga, located at 2400 m. (7,600 ft.). We then continue by jeep to URBINA where dinner at a quaint mountain refuge will be waiting for you

Mount Chimborazo
We drive for just over an hour to Mount Chimborazo (6310m), the highest and most impressive of Ecuador's volcanoes. We park at the lower refuge (4800 m) and continue on foot to the Edgar Whymper Refuge. Located at 5000 meters this is the highest refuge in the world! From here, it's all downhill-first on foot and then by bike we descend all the way to Ambato (2800m). This is an amazing bike ride through the highlands, with vicuñas being the sole inhabitants of these wild stretches. On this tour, cyclists enjoy a breathtaking 70 km ride through varying landscapes in just one day. This trip is by far a customer favorite. Seldom does one have the chance to ride from the snow line of a volcano, through rural Andean patchwork fields, picnic with vicuñas and at the end of the ride arrive in a modern city. In Ambato, we load up the bikes and return to Quito by jeep.

We did the 5 day tour. What an amazing trip. Make sure that you put this on your itinerary when you visit Quito. Jorge (the guide) Patricio (the driver) were amazing, great fun and had an amazing amount of knowledge between them that the were happy to share. The bikes were great and the riding was superb. Our accommodation and meals were excellent. We also enjoyed the company of Mateo who is new to the company and his customer service and enthusiasm will help the experience for all.

We did the 3-day bike ride with Roberto starting Aug 20, 2021. An amazing 3-days. The scenery was fantastic, the ride incredible, and the service was outstanding. Roberto was very accommodating to our wishes and made sure we were all doing fine throughout the trip. Cesar, our driver and cook also took great care of us and prepared excellent meals and made stops along the way so we could take pictures and try some of the local favourites - ice cream and guinea pig. The booking process was easy, and when we had to cancel our originally scheduled trip in 2020 due to COVID, Biking Dutchman gladly let us rebook for 2021 with no change fees. We highly recommend Biking Dutchman for anyone interested in seeing the highlights of the Ecuador Andes by bike.

Such an incredible 3 days! We loved every minute of the trip and hated for it to end. Our guide/driver, Roberto, was awesome and so fun throughout the trip. The biking was challenging but doable and the views were gorgeous! The hardest part was focusing on biking at times instead of looking around. Roberto did a wonderful job accommodating our skill levels and taking photos of us. We had excellent food - I'm still thinking about the delicious lunch from day 1! The accommodations were local and such great experiences. The night in the mountain hut was a favorite. It was a great opportunity to meet others as well. The bikes were in excellent condition and all safety gear was provided. The mix of biking, hiking, and driving was perfect. Overall, I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Ecuador and if we ever visit again, we will definitely do another one of the trips offered.

Roberto and Patricio made this trip exceptional. We had just returned to Quito from the Galapagos and were concerned about adjusting to the elevations. They ensured we were hydrated, drank coca tea, and accommodated us with one night at a lower elevation at a hotel in Riobamba. Being New Year's Eve, this turned out to be a win-win - we caught our breath, and enjoyed a wonderful time on the street for the festivities. The riding was exceptional - especially our last day likely because were more acclimatized. We started at 4800 meters with hail and snow. The dedicated bike trail was hard sand and gravel, fast but manageable. We ended the ride in a deep canyon, waterfalls dropping all around us on smooth pavement. Roberto led making sure that we all felt safe and Patricio followed in the Land Rover, taking pictures of us along the way. Can't wait to see them! Roberto and Patricio were very attentive, sharing wonderful and informative stories that engaged us all during the road trips. I cannot think of a better way to have spent our limited 3 days in the Andes. Our kids, 14, 16, and 17 cannot stop talking about it. Great value for an exceptional family adventure.

I loved the 3 day - 2 night tour to Cotopaxi, Quilotoa, and Chimborazo. I only had a few days for the highlands and this tour brought me to everything I wanted to see. Guides were knowledgable and gave detailed information on the different mtb-routes. Accommadation was far better than expected with cosy, warm-hearted hosts! Dinners could have been included in the overall price since they are basically at the hotel itself and it would have been nice to be dropped of at my hotel in Ambato at the end of the tour (it was just a few blocks away and there was plenty of time). Overall, I can highly recommend doing this tour for whoever is short on time and wants to genuinely experience the highland life of Ecuador!

Our family (with two 12 old children) had such a great time with Biking Dutchman - fun, peaceful, exhilarating, relaxing - all of these combined. FIRST, the team is awesome. Our guide, Atiel, was extremely knowledgeable about cycling, Ecuador, and South America. He checked each of us (all at different bicycling levels) and made sure we are all safe but also having fun. When needed and ready, he gently encouraged us to challenge ourselves. I was on and off the bike (as it was my first real mountain biking experience), and he and our driver always asked me if I would like to try, even though it must have been annoying to put the bike up and down each time. Rest of my family (intermediate level bikers) enjoyed the ride so much. SECOND, it is simply beautiful in the Andes. On a bike, especially, we were able to see places that's not possible (or popular) - beautiful and peaceful part of the Cotopoxi park, unbelievable scenery on the road from Chimborazo to Ambato, etc. Finally, the owners were very helpful and accommodating with our needs and questions. We truly had memorable three days, and already want to do another trip with them. Highly, highly recommend them to anyone - even those beginners like me!!!

I did a 3 day tour which was a life highlight for me. The scenery was absolutely incredible and the range of landscapes that we went through were diverse and breathtaking! Our guide Paul was an incredible person with truly amazing energy, an in depth knowledge of the region and it's history and the flora and fauna - He really made it unforgettable and was the best guide I've ever had by far. If you are lucky enough to get him as your guide you will see what I mean! I met Jan and Ana the day before the tour in their office, such beautiful people with a passion for what they do. I am a vegan and the food they made for my tour was absolutely incredible. The price was very reasonable and I am already thinking about my next visit to Ecuador to bike with the Biking Dutchman, next time I will do 5 days minimum. Special mention to our very friendly and helpful driver Patricio who made me feel safe the whole journey.

This was one of the best experiences of my life. There was amazing scenery and nature which was all very unique to Ecuador. The trip also wouldn't have been the same without our enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide, Paul and our reliable and hard working driver Patricio (probably spelling that wrong sorry!). We felt in very good hands the whole time. They made sure we were feeling ok during some of extra strenuous hiking and riding parts of the trip (make sure you're aware of the effects of being at that altitude before you go!). The hotels were quaint and like nothing I've experienced before, which was fun. The hotels can be very cold though (as in single digit degree C in the rooms) so make sure to pack wool socks and very warm clothes. Although a cliche, it was a truly unforgettable experience. Thanks Biking Dutchman and Paul in particular!

My friend and I booked this trip with little biking experience and not knowing what to expect! This was (without doubt) the best thing I have done in Ecuador. It was the best way to travel and see the back country of Ecuador! Roberto was the best guide you have to request him! we had so much fun traveling in local hostels, eating amazing food, and driving around in that awesome car. Couldn't have been more perfect thanks guys!! - mia<3
