Mammoth Hot Springs and Lamar Valley are two of the Upper Loop’s most unforgettable highlights. At Mammoth, travertine terraces glisten like frozen waterfalls, shaped over millennia by shifting hot springs—a living testament to Yellowstone’s volcanic heart. Elk often wander near the village, showing how wild and human spaces coexist.
Lamar Valley, carved by ancient glaciers, is a haven for wildlife. Herds of bison and pronghorn graze the meadows, while wolves and bears roam, creating an untamed scene.
The Upper Loop also features Tower Fall, steaming Calcite Springs, and the ancient Petrified Tree, each revealing Yellowstone’s dramatic past. Pair this with the Lower Loop’s geothermal wonders, such as Old Faithful and Yellowstone Lake, or the alpine beauty of Grand Teton National Park, featuring jagged peaks, clear lakes, and abundant wildlife, for an unforgettable Rocky Mountain experience.

Mammoth Hot Springs Mammoth Hot Springs is formed from calcium carbonate, which shifts and reshapes the landscape about every hundred years. These changes create striking travertine terraces, best viewed from boardwalks. Elk often wander near the historic buildings, but visitors should always keep a safe distance. Lamar Valley In the Upper Loop, Lamar Valley is a wide, picturesque expanse shaped by glaciers that left behind massive boulders. Today, it’s known for lush meadows and abundant wildlife. Herds of bison, elk, and pronghorn graze across the open landscape, drawing predators like grizzly bears and wolves, which are sometimes spotted by visitors. Other Upper Loop Highlights This loop also features Tower Fall, plunging 132 feet into a rocky canyon, and the Calcite Springs Overlook, where geothermal vents release sulfur-rich waters into the Yellowstone River. The Petrified Tree offers a rare glimpse into Yellowstone’s volcanic past.
