The tour itself was great! All three of our guides were knowledgeable and friendly, and the sites you visit are beautiful. Our driver Angga was polite and professional, and his car was comfortable. Communication could be improved. The day before the tour, Smartway sent us incorrect information about the departure time, but corrected it when I asked for clarification. They send detailed information about the each stop only one day in advance, but I wish they had sent it weeks earlier so we knew what to pack before leaving for Indonesia. They sent a basic packing list a few weeks prior to the tour that had incomplete information (for example, they said you needed to bring cash for entry fees for the different locations, but this was not needed). I had to proactively ask for the detailed info on one of the days because it was less than 4 hours before the pickup and I wasn’t given any info. Smartway is very responsive on Whatsapp though, so you just need to be proactive about asking questions. The logistics of the tour weren’t entirely clear on trip advisor, so read the rest of this review if you want to understand how it works. There is a single driver for the entire 3 days, and they take you to and from all locations. At each of the 3 hiking spots, they hand you off to a different local guide for the actual hiking part of the tour. Your luggage can stay in the car while hiking with the local guide. Be prepared that there are many hours of driving (usually 3-6 hours) in between the different locations. Information about each day/the hikes: Tumpak Sewu waterfall: you will drive ~2.5 hours from Malang to the waterfall. You will do lots of stairs up and down, cross waterfalls and wade through water that can be up to thigh deep. The hike is often wet and slippery, so you should wear hiking sandals or water shoes with good traction and be prepared for everything you are wearing to be completely soaked. Wearing a swimsuit under our clothes worked well. There is a chance to change clothes before the drive to the hotel. You stay in Malang city, and the drive back took ~3.5-4 hours due to traffic. Mount Bromo: You leave the hotel in Malang at 12:30 am and drive ~20-30min to meet up with your jeep driver (different person) for the day. Then you will ride in a very bumpy road/off-road for ~2-2.5 hours to get to the sunrise lookout. For sunrise, you will walk ~100-200 meters to the lookout point on a paved path. After sunrise, you will make a few stops in the Jeep, one of which is where you can hike the actual volcanic crater. The crater hike is not long, but does require some uphill and a few hundred stairs to reach the top. It takes ~35 min to reach the top. The stairs are well kept. There is an optional waterfall stop - if you stop here, you will hike ~2 km round trip to the waterfall. It is relatively steep down/up, but the waterfall is pretty (not as wide as tumpak sewu). You drive ~6-7 hours to get to the hotel in Bondowoso where you stay. Ijen Crater: You will be picked up at midnight to drive ~2 hours to Ijen. You will hike in the dark to the crater. The path there is all uphill and you gain ~500m of elevation. It is slightly steep for around 1k, and then very steep for the next 1.4k. Once you get to the top, the path is relatively flat and easy. Overall it is a very challenging hike up and moderate cardio fitness is a minimum requirement. We could not go all the way down into the crater to the blue fire, but the partial hike down was very uneven/rocky and slippery in spots. The total distance we walked was ~10k. After the hike, you will drive back to your drop off point. We drove to Surabaya which took ~5 hours on the toll road (we had to specifically ask to take the toll road and pay 150k extra for toll fees; the no toll route was ~7 hours). There is little time to sleep in the accommodations - be prepared for ~4-5 hours of sleeping time at the hotel. The hotels they picked were high quality and very nice for the few hours we were there (we chose the premium option when booking).

A great experience to visit these three attractions within 3 days. Everything was arranged well and quickly by Smartway, as we had booked this tour only 2 days in advance via WhatsApp. That the driver, who will accompany you during the 3-day tour, only speaks some basic English is not a problem in itself, because with Google Translate you can manage quite well. Furthermore, Smartway is easily accessible via WhatsApp and your questions will be answered quickly. The local guides, and at Bromo also a local driver for the mandatory Toyota Landcruiser, are also friendly and helpful. A few points to consider: The Tumpak Sewu waterfall is really much trickier than expected, because of the many high and worn steps. Walking through sometimes knee-high water, over smooth stones and small and narrow wooden bridges and narrow edges (without a fence!) also made this excursion quite challenging. At Bromo, the pick-up time was not clear. In the information we received it said 00:30, but eventually the driver came to our hotel at least an hour later. Furthermore, Bromo was quite doable, even if you are less sporty. According to the information, Ijen would have a medical check-up, which is mandatory for anyone who wants to enter the crater. But we haven't had any at all. If that "check up" concerns outdated information, better omit it.

What an experience. We saw some amazing landscapes and had some awesome guides! Sandi was awesome at Bromo !!!! Just a message for the tour operators - please list your itinerary per package price as this differs (I had to go through the stress of rebooking as the hostel cheapest package meant you go back to malang each night so night sleep when you travel to ijen! This is very poor and I had to rebook the budget hotel. The hotels were very good at this level. Also, I whilst the standard of communication was good from the operator they did not specify when/where you’d be picked up and what food was included or not so we overbought when we didn’t need to - ie the first nights dinner was included). This made me anxious throughout the whole trip not knowing 100% what was going on. Overall, the experience was incredible and you’ll be fine if you’re not a control freak like me lol but be prepared for lack of sleep and the delirium that comes with! Be prepared if travelling to Bali via port it’s a 4-5hr drive after the ferry….. P.s it’s freezing during the early morning so pack layers. Bromo: there are so many horses to hire but don’t know how ethical this is.. Ijen: you have to pay 25,000 pp if you want to go further by the flame and it’s a donation to the sulphur miners. Be prepared for rude tourists who push and shove you - ruined it a little for us. Waterfalls: just amazing

It was a great experience, a great adventure. Certainly you are tired after the 3 days but it was great! We did it when we were still in jet lag so it wasn't hard to get up! We advise you to do it like this! A real adventure a la Indiana Jones with jeep and beautiful scenery!

We are very happy with the trip, the communication with the travel agency was excellent from the very beginning. Our driver was amazing – very helpful and he shared lots of interesting facts about Indonesia. The whole trip fully met our expectations, and on top of that, the guide at Mount Ijen was fantastic! We highly recommend it – we couldn’t be more satisfied :)

We were a group of 7 friends that did the 3D2N trip, and it was a great experience. However, it's physically very demanding, because we didn't sleep much during those days (we had the wake up at 23 and 00 to take the transport each day), and because of the hikes. Tumpak Sewu and Bromo are not that hard, but Ijen is, because one needs to be fast if you want to see the blue fire. Overall, the experience was great, and it's a great way to see a different part of Indonesia, more wild and full of nature. Now, going into some details: - Tumpak Sewu waterfalls were great. They took us from Malang to the place, where we met our guide, Aril. He was an awesome guide, taking us around the waterfall, the cave and the natural pools. Good vibes and taking great pictures. This was an easy hike, as we were not in a rush and we could take our time to take photos, swim and enjoy - Bromo was also great. We slept near Malang and a Jeep came to pick us up at midnight. We didn't know there was a 2 hour drive to get there. It was not the most comfortable trip, but it was an amazing experience too. We say the sunrise from the viewpoint and we went to the crater later. The hike is not super demanding because it's short and one can stop everywhere. In this case, our guide was Hamdan. He was also an amazing guy, again very good vibes, and made us enjoy the trip and the stops we did along the way to take photos of the jeeps, the black sand and the valley. For drone lovers, I could fly the drone in the sunrise viewpoint, but there was no problem flying it in the crater - Ijen was good, but it was "the worse" of all 3 experiences. We had to take another 2 hour drive to get to the starting point from the hotel. Physically, this was with a huge difference the most demanding activity. The way up is very steep, and it's not short, but not super long either. You have to keep up a good pace if you want to get to the top fast and see the blue fire. The blue fire is interesting, but might not be worth it for some people. Down in the crater it can be uncomfortable to stay with all the sulfure smoke (for the eyes and breathing). For me it was great, but I understand it's not for everyone. In this case, our guide was not as good as the previous days. He was a charming guy, but he didn't act as a guide because he didn't tell us any kind of interesting facts or similar things. He sometimes disappeared in the way up or down. Also, he charged us an extra "donation" of 25k IDR/pax to go down to the blue fire. Complete unnecessary, as we could have followed the people. In any case, the experience was nice, but not the best A couple of extra points. As we were a big group, the company sent us a driver for us for the 3 days. Mr. Bonny has done a terrific job. Always super punctual, serving and caring. Amazing, great guy until the end, showing us the way in the Ketapang harbour, and giving us breakfast for the last day after the Ijen hikes. Super thankful for him! The final point is the accomodation and the lunch. The first homestay was nothing special, but they gave us good food. The second hotel was great but good was not included. Overall, good. Just keep in mind that the places are not close to the final points, so trips of 4-6 hours are expected daily. This is very demanding too. In general, this has been a very good experience! Great job organising everything for us!!

3 days visit of very beautiful sites. The sunrise over Bromo volcano is an unforgettable experience, breathtaking scenery. Adorable drivers and guides as always in Indonesia. For premium option very good hotels. Only negative: the lack of time to rest, we chain 2 rises in the middle of the night and 8 hours of car in between, we finish this course very tired, plan a few days of rest then!
