After a delicious breakfast, we check out, and we travel north of Kenya to Samburu. Upon arrival in Samburu, you'll be immersed in the local Samburu community and experience their traditional way of life. Your guide will provide context as you tour a nearby village compound, learning about their semi-nomadic pastoralist customs, like spinning dung into crafts. You may also have the opportunity to interact with Samburu women and learn about their beautiful copper jewelry crafting. Drive into the park, arriving in time for lunch. Later this afternoon, set out on a game drive in search of the rare wildlife only found north of the equator. The enchanting Samburu National Reserve provides excellent year-round game viewing, including a chance to encounter the ‘Samburu five’: reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, & Grevy’s zebra. Stop for sundowners to observe the sun setting over the African plains. Return back to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Hannah and the group made it possible for us to see wonderful Africa. We were able to customise the tour based on our interests. Both of the private tour made it a priority that we see the big 5 animals and the migration. I highly recommend Odyssey Safaris for travel to Africa.

This trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity put together seamlessly by Odyssey Safaris. Our guide, James, made us feel comfortable, safe and well informed throughout the entire trip (including airport pickup, drop off and transfers in between). He offered information about animals, locals, environment and everything in between. I would recommend using Odyssey Safaris to any of my friends or strangers alike.

My family consists of myself, my husband and 2 kids age 18 and 12. Jackson was our guide. He picked us up at the airport. He was friendly, informative and helpful. I felt safe all the time. Jackson gave us a brief overview of every thing we were doing each day. The food at the hotels was great. We loved the buffet style, perfect for families with picky eaters. The rooms were great and the staff was friendly. The animal viewing was amazing in the Masai Mara. We saw lions eating a wildebeest, a leopard with a kill in the tree and even a cheetah chasing a gazelle. We also saw elephants, giraffe, zebras, hippos and thousands of wildebeests, plus many other animals. The scenery was beautiful.

Odyssey Safaris customized a 13 day trip for me and my wife, my mother and aunt, and another couple friends. First off, the Odyssey Safaris team was great from the start. This was our fifth trip to Kenya/Tanzania, and our first with Odyssey. We will definitely work with them again. We were able to 100% customize our experience. After initially contacting Odyssey, Mark put us in contact with Hannah in Kenya. She recommended an excellent initial itinerary which we made a few custom tweaks to based on our previous experience at some of the parks (it was a fairly aggressive plan after the tweaks). Once the itinerary was determined, Hannah sent along her recommendations for lodging which we were able to review prior to booking. The online custom brochure they provided was very professional and gave a great overview of the trip. Because of delays on our part along with the need for overnight medical devices, we ended up having to change a couple of the camps that were originally recommended. Hannah worked with us to find camps that had full time electricity and other amenities. Once we booked the trip, Hannah worked patiently to get all our visa information, and was able to get our visas for both Kenya and Tanzania arranged. Having done this myself in the past, this was a very convenient service provided. Leading up to the trip, we had several online calls with Hannah and Eliud to ensure that all our questions were answered. They also provided tips for travel, packing, vaccinations, etc. along with a convenient app for following our complete itinerary. The visas were forwarded and we printed them off prior to departure. Day 1: Upon arrival late in the evening, Odyssey was at the airport on time to take us to our hotel in Nairobi. We stayed at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi. Eliud was waiting at the hotel to review the trip itinerary and provide details for the next day's departure. Because it was personalized to us, we had flexibility for timing that you wouldn't normally have in a group tour. Day 2: The Safari Park Hotel was a bit of a mixed bag as the grounds are quite beautiful, but the hotel rooms are a bit dated. The beds are very hard, which I had forgotten is actually typical for Kenya hotels. The grounds are beautiful and expansive and provide a lodge-like experience that make you forget you are in the city. The breakfast was lovely and the staff was very friendly and attentive. After checkout, we met Erastus, who would be our guide in Kenya, and departed for the drive to Amboseli. On the way into the park, we had our first game drive on the way to the Serena Amboseli lodge. We were greeted at the entrance by the staff who hand out cool wet washcloths to wipe off the road dust, as well as a glass of fresh juice. The lodge is lovely, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable (with very firm beds). We had time to rest a bit prior to our afternoon game drive. Dinner was typical of lodges we had stayed at in the past and was good. The wait and bar staff were friendly and attentive. Day 3: Amboseli did not disappoint as a great place to see many animals, but especially elephants. We were also fortunate that the clouds cleared up, and we were able to get a great view of Mt Kilimanjaro, which is a highlight when visiting Amboseli. We had morning and afternoon game drives, and our guide Erastus was great pointing out the various animals and answering all our questions about the animals and birds we saw. We also spotted 3 of the Big 5 (elephants, cape buffalo, lions) Day 4: We left Amboseli in the morning and crossed the border into Tanzania at Namanga. Erastus helped us through the process and introduced us to Ndelilio, our guide for the Tanzania portion of our trip. We stopped in Arusha and had lunch at Shanga House which is highly recommended. Also made time to shop there for a little while and explore many locally made items in their multiple shops. After that, we stopped by Trek Afrika Art Gallery to visit Robert Aswani who is a fantastic artist who does a lot of work promoting art with the local community - highly recommend setting up a visit in advance if you are heading through Arusha! From there, we headed to Maramboi Tented Lodge in Tarangire. The tents there are very well appointed, and the staff and the food are excellent. The trip to Tarangire was one of the tweaks we made to our itinerary, so it did make for a long day's drive from Amboseli - totally worth it, but we were ready for the cocktail hour by the time we arrived! Day 5: We had a full day game drive in Tarangire with box lunches provided by the lodge. Unfortunately, my wife contracted a stomach bug early that morning, so could not participate. She stayed at the camp for the day, and the staff showed great concern and attended to her needs. Erastus worked the drive so that we could check in with her late in the morning. She was still recuperating, but was feeling better by the afternoon. Again, the staff at Maramboi were great! One of the highlights of Tarangire is the vast number of baobab trees in the park. Day 6: We checked out of Maramboi and began a morning game drive with box lunch. We spotted a leopard during the drive (#4 of Big 5). After lunch we headed to Ngorongoro Crater camp (Sanctuary Retreat). This was a small camp on the east side of the crater in a jungle-like setting. The staff was fantastic, as were the food and accommodation. While having cocktails around the campfire that evening, the staff took us behind the reception tent to point out one of their (non-aggressive) resident elephants. We were no more than 15 feet away from her as she dined on leaves and grass. Very cool to have such a close encounter. Day 7: Being on the east side of the crater was advantageous as we did not have to wait in what can be a long line of vehicles entering at from the west gate. We enjoyed a full day game drive in Ngorongoro. Definitely a highlight! The crater is a unique ecosystem and there are a wide variety of animals. We spotted rhinoceros that day (#5 of 5). The box lunch provided by the camp was delicious as we dined down by the lake where there are hippos to be seen. Day 8: We left Ngorongoro that morning to head to Mbali Mbali Soroi Serengeti camp in Western Serengeti. The camp was very nice and the staff was attentive and friendly. Due to our aggressive schedule, we only spent one night there but would definitely return. It was quite a long day combining game driving with the trip across the Serengeti. We saw a lot of animals, especially a great number of lions on the trip westward. Day 9: We headed to the Mara Mara tented camp in Northern Serengeti in hopes of catching the big herds and the great migration. It was quite a long day of travel, but the accommodation at the camp made it all worthwhile. The staff was great and took great care of us from happy hour through to dinner. Day 10: We saw so many big herds of wildebeests and were lucky enough to see one of the herds crossing the Mara River at crossing #6. Ndelilio our guide did an excellent job of getting us in a position to see the crossing (there were a lot of trucks lined up on the river). This was the highest of highlights of the trip. I didn't realize the timing and patience required to get to witness the spectacle, so felt very lucky to have seen it. Hannah was the one to suggest this location, so gets all the credit for understanding the migration and arranging us to be there at the right time. It was also my birthday, so it was one of the best presents ever. The staff at the lodge were also enthusiastic participants in the birthday celebration that my wife had arranged at dinner that night. The staff's singing and dancing is a memory I get to keep forever. Super fun. Day 11: We headed out in the morning for our flights to the Masai Mara. We said goodbye to Ndelilio. There was a small snafu where the flight got delayed, so we were concerned with making our connecting flight that would get us closer to our lodge. Fortunately, Hannah arranged it such that we were able to connect without issue and get to the Mara a little late of our original schedule. Erastus was at the air strip when we arrived and took us to the very well-appointed Ashnil Mara Camp. The camp is right next to the Mara River, so we were able to see crocodiles and hippos from deck. This is a lovely property. Day 12: We started the morning with a balloon ride that Hannah had arranged for us. Spectacular. We returned to lodge after a morning drive. We opted to split the day up with an afternoon game drive instead of a full day drive with a boxed lunch. Erastus was very accommodating, and it was another great day. Day 13: We flew from Masai Mara to Nairobi in the morning. At the last minute, Eliud was able to arrange for us to visit the Coffee House in Karen and we also got to visit the giraffe refuge where we got to feed giraffes. After that, we headed to the airport for the flight home. If you’re still reading this, here are my recommendations: - Definitely book with Odyssey Safaris. They can provide excellent itinerary suggestions and can arrange lodging for a variety of budgets. They are attentive and responsive from the time you contact them through the end of your trip. - Start to arrange your trip at least 6 months in advance. The larger the group, the earlier you need to start. Some of Hannah’s original recommendations were booked up by the time we finalized our arrangements. - If you have questions, ask. Hannah and Eliud were able to address all of our questions and concerns in a timely manner. - Check on any needed vaccinations in advance of your trip. - With exception of the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, I would recommend all of the camps listed above. - The itinerary above was very aggressive in that there were some long days in the car. That was fine for me, but a little much for others who tire more easily. I like all the parks because the landscape as each is so different. You will need to decide how much car time you are interested in. There are no bad choices. - Savor the sunrises and sunsets as there are few places in the world that offer such grand vistas. - Take the balloon ride in Serengeti or Masai Mara if you can. It is a bit pricey, but you will remember it forever. - Internal flights are nice, but make sure to drive from place to place wherever possible, as it is the best way to see the country and meet the people.

The Odyssey team was fantastic from day one of planning my Kenya adventure! I really wanted to visit Ol Pejeta and was open to their ideas beyond that. I had the perfect itinerary including Lake Naivasha, Masai Mara and Amboseli. So many amazing wildlife sightings, great accommodations and the BEST guide Simon. I had issues with my luggage and delayed flights and they helped me navigate that mess too. Highly recommend!

We chose Odyssey Safaris for our honeymoon in May and couldn't have been happier. From the minute I booked the tour, we were well taken care of! Michael in the office reached out immediately and helped with everything from quotes for airfare and our ETA visa, to booking extra hotel nights and even setting up a cake for my husband's birthday! Our guide Jackson picked us up at the airport and was with us the entire trip. I really enjoyed having one driver and guide that we could get to know and talk with every day. This tour consists of three different parks in different areas of Kenya - specifically tailored to ensure you see all of the most popular animals. With a guide like Jackson, you will see many, many more. I can't name them all here but it was amazing. Some of my favorites were the herds of elephants in both the Amboseli and Masai Mara, the cheetahs in the Masai, and the many, many birds that we spotted along the way. The hotels arranged by Odyssey were all very nice, our favorite being Mara Maisha Camp, it's everything you picture for an African safari and quite luxurious for a tent camp! We also had a picnic lunch from the hotel eaten in the Masai Mara the day we stayed there - this was so much fun. Service at the hotels was outstanding. All Kenyans we met could not have been nicer and more hospitable. I will make one note - this tour spends a lot of time driving from park to park. There are no American highways in Kenya, so to get to the next destination you might spend hours in the truck. Rather than get frustrated with this, please take the time to talk to your guide - Jackson was a veritable font of knowledge about the history of Africa, Kenyan customs, politics, animals, nature, etc. We learned SO much! All in all, highly recommend Odyssey for anyone wanting an amazing Kenyan experience.
